Munk Bogballe Ready for Christmas with New Online Store

Muk Bogballe Computer
Specializing in sophisticated, made-to-order laptops made of aluminum, mahogany, leather, and precious gems, Munk Bogballe is gearing up for this year's Christmas shopping rush by opening a shiny new online store and introducing several new laptop color and personalization options. Building a beautiful and personalized computer just became more fun with four updated calf leather color choices (royal blue, passion, emerald green, and noir -- each with a matching sapphire, ruby or emerald on/off button) and the ability to have a message or a name engraved into the computer's aluminum case. Computers don't have a reputation for being the warmest or most personal of holiday gifts but people love getting them and Munk Bogballe's classy, engraved version could be an exception to that rule (plus the new store means orders can come in from all over the world so no more excuses).

Munk Bogballe Debuts New Bespoke Laptop Collection

Munk Bogballe Luxury Laptop
Munk Bogballe debuted its new Classic Bespoke collection of laptops at the recent Millionaire Fair in Moscow. Assembled in Denmark these luxury computers aren't as flashy or dolled up as some creations we've seen but make a quieter, more sophisticated statement. Each laptop is made to order and options include aluminum (natural or black) or 18 carat gold for the metal surfaces, calf or ostrich leather in a variety of colors for the bottom and accent areas (other exotic leathers may also be available), and your choice of either a row of pave diamonds or single precious ruby, sapphire, or diamond gem to add the final finishing touch. The interior specs aren't anything amazing but should be sufficient to keep the average user happy. Starting at €5,200 ($7,200) and up.

Nokhoo Deloverly Laptop Bag, Handbag of the Day

Nokhoo Laptop Bag
My new favorite laptop bag designs are from Nicole Roberts' Nokhoo line. Designed to be both beautiful and functional, the bags are tough enough for daily use and feature zippered pockets in all shapes and sizes for stashing anything you might want to put in there. The idea is that with one of these bags you won't need to carry an additional purse unless you want to. The bag shown here is called "Deloverly" and has a textured heavy-weight cotton exterior, contrast print lining, and padding throughout. It has a dedicated laptop compartment plus pockets for business cards, cds, gadgets, pens, and even a detachable cell phone case. $150

Plaid Doctrine Briefcase, Handbag of the Day
OK, not quite a handbag, but certainly can carry a few extra items tucked in with your laptop ... Plaid Doctrine's briefcase is a nice twist on the ho-hum black laptop carrier and is eco-friendly, too. The bag is water- and stain-resistant, and its high-performance fabric is made from recycled bottles. Other features are prime-grade, vegetable-tanned leather trim, solid brass hardware with nickel matte finish, a full ripstop nylon lining, and a handy rear pocket to slip over a rolling luggage handle. Measures 12" x 16" x 4" and holds a laptop with up to a 17" screen. Colors are Blue Houndstooth (shown), Red Houndstooth, and Grey Striped. Free ground shipping domestically. $479

Leather-Lined Wooden Cases for Macbook

Wooden Leather Laptop Case
It can be hard to find a laptop case you really love because even though there are an infinite supply of different fabrics, patterns, shapes, and sizes out there somehow many of them seem almost the same. But not this one. This laptop case by Rainer Spehl is more like a mini, portable cabinet than a bag or a sleeve. Made of wood, lined in leather, and featuring a hinged top with magnetic closure the design comes in three sizes that are made to fit the 13", 15", and 17" Macbook Pro. The only thing missing (in my opinion) is a handle for carrying -- it looks a little too slick for me and without one I can totally see myself dropping it, Macbook and all, onto the unforgiving pavement. €160 - €350

Booq Boa Flow M Laptop Backpack Review

I will admit it, most gadget carriers stink. This includes the legion of available backpacks meant to hold your laptop computers and other gear. Why are they bad? Well, aside from being really poor in quality, they are ergonomically and logically flawed most of the time. I'd love to think that every item meant to be worn or carried around goes through a series of ergonomics tests to ensure they work well and are comfortable. How false this is. Most of them make the problems they intend to cure even worse. A few examples? How about laptop bags with insufficient padding so that your computer is susceptible to damage when you put it on the floor. Or straps and a weight distribution that hurts your back unnecessarily. This basically includes ALL messenger bags meant to hold anything but light weight documents. So I've painted a pretty dismal picture. Is there hope? Of course. Which leads me to a my own personal concept of luxury backpacks - that being ones that look good, work well, and are comfortable. Leave the fine leather and luxury brand names to purses and wallets.

Brands like Booq do their homework before releasing items into the market. It isn't that their products are perfect, but rather that when you uses them you genuinely feel that thought was put into their design and function. I've owned an assortment of their products, and am continually impressed by the experience. My newest Booq is the Boa Flow laptop computer carrying backpack. It comes in a few sizes and I have the "M' (medium model). There is a larger model that will fit more stuff, but is mostly meant to house large sized (17 inch screen and a bit above) notebook computers. One this I really like about the Booq Boa Flow is that it is able to hold other stuff as well. Booq has designed in a bunch of other large and small pockets and cargo areas. Some of these are quite dedicated. Such as for cables, water bottles, umbrellas, cameras, and other items. Despite the medium size, I can carry my 15 inch notebook computer, a host of cables, some pens and other stationary, an iPad, a few magazines, umbrella, and some documents - all with comfortable room for more. The Boa Flow is even an improvement organizationally from their previous Python model. Materials wise Booq only uses fine ballistic nylon, sturdy zippers, and other quality materials. The designs of their stuff looks really cool as well. Not too dorky, but certainly futuristic enough to impress people. Plus, that black with orange trim is a great looking motif. Some of the materials are a bit scratchy, but don't really affect the wearing experience that much. This includes the orange mesh material on the back part of the bag. Again, that doesn't affect you unless you are wearing the bag without a shirt on.

Gizmobies Protect Your PDA in Style

Gizmobies Protect Your PDA in StyleWhenever I get a new cell phone, I obsess over protecting it from every scratch, but after fruitless shopping for a case that's not too bulky or too expensive or too blah, I usually just give in to the basic black leather case. Yawn. Now that I'm finally ready to join the modern era and get myself a BlackBerry, I started noticing all the cases for those and discovered ... Gizmobies. Forgive my excitement, but now NYC area residents can buy these at the Gizmobies store in Midtown or via its online store (more below).

Made of a thin yet durable gel-like material, Gizmobies provide superior padded protection, come in tons of colors and patterns, and are thin enough that your phone or PDA slips in and out of your pocket or purse easily, yet provide a great grip so that your device won't fall off a table or your lap. You can easily change skins without any trouble at all -- they peel right off, and don't leave any residue.

I recently chatted with Andrea Balkin, who owns the New York area Gizmobies franchise, and here's what I learned: Gizmobies were started about three years ago by a successful technology start-up team with the goal of inventing a product that allowed iPod and cell phone owners to customize and protect their device but keep it pocketable and enhance its aesthetics without adding bulk or weight.

Andrea noted, "I purchased a Gizmobie for my iPhone 1G at the beginning of 2009 and fell in love with the fact that my phone, my most used possession, now felt great in my hand, looked really cool, and had excellent protection! No more ugly bright pink rubber case, which got stuck in my pocket, collected dirt in it, and looked so very pedestrian.

"I loved my Gizmobie so much that I wanted to get another one, but found that there was no place on the East Coast to purchase them. A budding entrepreneur myself, I knew that Gizmobies would be an instant hit out east -- especially in the iPhone Apple mecca of Manhattan!" And so ...

If you're in the NYC metro area, you should stop by Andrea's kiosk in the Manhattan Mall, on 6th Avenue at West 33rd Street. It features more than 130 designs, with new ones arriving regularly, for most BlackBerry phones, Nintendo DSi and Lite gaming systems, Nokia N97 mobile phone, and the Apple suite of devices; iPhone, iTouch, iPod, and Nano ($20-$25). Gizmobies for laptops are due out before the Christmas holidays.

Gizmobies offer a lifetime guarantee that allows the customer to mail the product back to the company's headquarters in Las Vegas if anything should happen to the product. Gizmobies are made in the USA.

Check out the gallery for examples of the array of patterns available, and how Gizmobies look on some popular devices.

The 1.4-lb. Sony Vaio, Just Right for Your Evening Bag
Holiday party time is approaching fast, and before you know it you'll be trading in that summer tote bag you're still holding on to for a pretty little evening bag. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to take along your laptop for that moment when you need to do a quick e-mail check, or map out a route to the next fete, and you don't have a BlackBerry? Wait ... what kind of person is so uncool, such a Luddite, that she doesn't have a BlackBerry? Me. But I'm getting one soon, promise. In the meantime, if I had Sony's tiny, 1.4-lb. P Series Lifestyle PC, I could just slip it in my bag and go. Dimensions are just 4.8 in. x 9.7 in. x 0.8 in., and it comes in red (shown), green, gold, white, and black. The tech specifications are too much to get into here, but Amazon has all the info you need. Or keep reading after the jump for the official data from Sony's website. $999.99

Tumi Villa 17" Computer Brief

A laptop case needn't make you look like a Star Trek enthusiast or some sort of overgrown schoolchild, yet most such designs leave a lot to be desired aesthetically. That's especially true when it comes to sheathing the larger sort of laptop such as the Apple MacBook Pro 17". A stylish machine like that deserves an equally stylish case, however. Chic luggage and travel accessories company Tumi has come to the rescue with the Villa 17" Computer Brief (above). Made from the finest Italian texture coated canvas with luxurious vachetta leather trim and polished, nickel hardware, it features a padded laptop compartment, interior organizer pockets, and an adjustable, removable shoulder strap. The case complements the rest of Tumi's refined, elegant and classic Villa Collection, targeted to the sophisticated professional, featuring a range of designs for every requirement.

Loopbag Vanguard Laptop Computer Backpack Review

I used to wonder why my older laptop backpack was so large. All I had in it was a computer, some cables, and an accessory or two - I looked like a trail hiker walking around with it. I was recently presented with the Loopbag Vanguard laptop backpack and I realized I can finally carry around my computer essentials without looking silly - In fact the backpack looks pretty good. Aside from this backpack in several colors, Loopbag makes a range of bags, packs, and other portable computer essentials in a fun range of colors that will remind you of Timbuk2 and Crumpler.

The namesake of the backpack makes sense when looking at it head on as you see two zippered areas that form two loops. It makes for a hip, modern look, and one that is simple enough to have broad appeal. I get the impression that the backpack was designed based upon a functional concept as opposed to just a look, and the system is pretty clever. It gives you multiple access points so things inside are easier to find, which is good because you don't have to unload everything to get to things buried inside, as you can access the main compartment from the front or rear on both sides. Inside the back is a whole range of little pouches - mostly zippered - for any manner of small or large items. I enjoy frequently finding new areas to store little items on the Loopbag such as a small pouch for cash or keys located on one of the shoulder straps.

Moonsus Gallery Laptop Tote, Handbag of the Day

Moonsus Gallery Laptop Tote, Handbag of the Day
Ages ago, a co-worker told me pointedly that it was OK to carry two bags, say, a purse and a commuter bag. But venture into three, and you've crossed over into "bag lady" territory. So when I saw this laptop tote that also is big enough to carry other essentials and not too expensive, I was excited. Moonsus's Gallery Laptop Tote measures 14.5"L x 11"H x 6.75"W and has a main compartment with a built-in, padded, adjustable divider for files or most 14" notebook screens; fits a laptop up to 13.5"L x 9"H x 2"W; has a full leather exterior, two-tone gold striped satin lining, an inner zip pocket, a front zip pocket, interior pockets for cell phone or PDA, pen holders, and a key ring; metal feet; and an 11" shoulder strap drop. It comes with a drawstring bag for storage. Available in red, black and a yellowy gold; $318.

Vivienne Tam's Digital Clutch

When Vivienne Tam posed with Miss USA during New York Fashion Week she had an interesting accessory tucked under her arm. That peony-printed clutch that matched her dress was no purse, it was the new mini notebook from Hewlett Packard. HP collaborated with Tam on the fashion notebook which also appeared on the runway with Tam's clothing. The "digital clutch" has a 10-inch screen. No details on specs or pricing have been released yet but it is supposed be available in early 2009. Laptop Magazine has a great gallery of close-up shots of the new gadget.

The Bentley Laptop

To be filed under the ridiculously aspirational: the new Bentley laptop designed by Ego. For those who believe that a hood ornament transferred to your leather-bound laptop will lead you any closer to mogul status, please contact me so I can steer your financial missteps in the right direction (philanthropy, real estate, ok, fine, a pair of YSL Tribute sandals). I'm glad Engadget seems to agree on the absurdity of the latest to enter the luxury laptop division, which starting at close to $20K makes my current laptop wishlist (comprised solely of the Macbook Air) look like a trip to the 99 Cent Store. Barneys appeared to drop the line after carrying an earlier design, and this version is sold only at Selfridge's, although Ego is expanding its market in the label-happy UAE. Check out the Ego website for diamond-encrusted laptops and more signs that society isn't on its way to hell in a handbag after all. It's headed that direction via your luxury notebook.
