Abramovich Buys Dasha 100 Acres of Land on the Moon

Filed under: Celebrity Shopping, Real Estate Developments

The moonNow that's a gift. I have always wanted someone to give me the moon. Now they can.

Chelsea Football Club Owner and famous spender Roman Abramovich has given his girlfriend Dasha a truly celestial gift: 100 acres of land on the moon.

The land was purchased from The Lunar Embassy, which offers "deeds" to an acre of moon-land for around $20 apiece, as well as "Extraterrestrial Domain Names" and an opportunity to have your name written on an "Archival Disk" that will be stored on the moon.

Lunatic: Someone who has been staring at the moon too long and has lost their mind.

Hana Ranch In Hawaii Seeks Conservation-Minded Buyer

A major piece of Hawaiian real estate has hit the market. The owners of Hana Ranch, a 4,500-acre property on Maui have listed it for $65 million. The Honolulu Star Bulletin recently reported that Hana Ranch Partners LLC, the majority shareholder of which is a part of the Getty Trust, has been looking for foreign buyers from Asia, Europe and Canada. The partners, which also include San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom, have been searching for a buyer for more than a year. Hana Ranch Partners purchased the property as an investment in 2001 for about $25 million and wants to find conservationists to preserve the rural nature of Hana. A conservation easement agreement with the Maui Coastal Land Trust saves 41 oceanfront acres from development and designates 100 acres of the land for affordable housing. So far the property hasn't been marketed for residential development. The listing is here.

Green Plains, Estate of the Day

A classic piece of Virginia acreage has just hit the market. Green Plains is a 642-acre estate in Virginia's Matthews County located 30 miles from Williamsburg. The property has a long history. It is believed Green Plains was established in the 18th century with a Colonial King's Deed (the original documents were burned in Richmond during the Civil War). The property has been owned by just four families including the Cabots, one of Boston's first families, and former Texaco CEO and Chairman Augustus C. Long. The property is now held in The Augustus C. Long Trust, his daughter Dorothy Long is sole trustee and beneficiary of the property.

The property includes three miles along the North River in Mobjack Bay and it has deep water access via a 360-foot-long private pier. The main house is a red brick Georgian mansion with seven bedrooms. No interior pictures of the home unfortunately so we can't speculate on how the shape it is in. The property includes a four-foot wall which surrounds an acre of gardens and orchards. There are five Cape-Cod style cottages and three equestrian barns with 20 stalls and fenced paddocks. The property also includes property for hunting and fishing. Green Plains estate is listed at $22 million.

Malibu Land On Sale For $130 Million

We've seen some huge estates sell in Malibu but how much would you pay for just the land? A large chunk of Malibu land has gone on sale for an astronomical price. This 1,280 acres of land has ocean views and beach frontage along Pacific Coast Highway and is broken into 29 parcels. The listing says "they don't don't make land like this anymore." Certainly not this close to Los Angeles they don't. I'm just hoping someone doesn't clutter up this spot with too many houses, it's one of my favorite unspoiled spots along PCH. It is listed at $130 million.

Black Bluffs, Estate of the Day

Usually I don't write up pieces of land without homes on them but this one is pretty impressive, a huge 1,507-acre spread (1,374 deeded along with 133-acre BLM lease) in Montana on the Yellowstone River. This area was named Black Bluffs by Capt. William Clark of Thomas Jefferson's Corps of Discovery and has been basically untouched for over 200 years. The property is bordered on the north by 2.5 miles of private Yellowstone River frontage and has dramatic upriver views framed by the Beartooth Mountains, Montana's tallest peaks. The river is full of wild brown and rainbow trout and the area is rich with wildlife including sage grouse, wild turkey, elk, moose, black bear, antelope, eagle and osprey. The property is located about 30 minutes away from Billings, Montana. Hopefully whoever buys this land will preserve this beautiful open space. It is listed at $5,750,000.

Filed under: Charity of the Day

Today is the fourth entry in our month-long series that looks at end-of-the-year gift giving. The Nature Conservancy has some very interesting options for your holiday giving. The charity, which helps protect ecologically important lands and waters for both nature and people, has gift options in a variety of price tiers. For $50,000 you can sponsor a scientific expedition that will bear your recipient's name. For $32,000 you can protect a mile of land in Costa Rica. You can also donate to help to protect coral reefs and sponsor land by the acre in the U.S. The Nature Conservancy has protected more than 117 million acres of land and 5,000 miles of rivers worldwide and they are involved in over 100 marine conservation projects globally. The easiest way to give is to donate a gift membership. The membership will include a Nature Gift Card announcing your present and all membership materials including a Conservancy membership card. This includes the Nature Conservancy magazine and invitations to participate in local events at Nature Conservancy preserves, which can be a fun and educational experience.

Woodstock's Famous Farm For Sale

I am too young to have been a part of Woodstock, but for the 400,000 or so who did attend the 1969 music festival, Max Yasgur's farm in upstate New York is a special place. Roy Howard currently owns the property and after years of wrangling with local officials over reunion permits, he's ready to sell. The asking price is $8 million, but who can put a price on owning such an iconic piece of American history?

The alfalfa field where the actual concert took place is not for sale, but Yasgur's 2,000 square foot house is, along with a larger farmhouse and barn as well as 103 acres of land. The house, located 80 miles north of New York City, comes with a gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances, double convection ovens, Viking stove, antique soapstone sink, 22-foot vaulted ceiling and beautiful views of the Pocono Mountains. Also included is a double whirlpool tub, steam shower and a bidet.
