Abigail Ahern Atelier's Charming Lamps

Abigail Ahern of Atelier Abigail Ahern, has an intriguing sense of style. She manages to bring together classical, playful and maybe a bit absurd together in a way that somehow redeems what might be otherwise cast aside. She unveiled her new lamps at this years' Parisian tradeshow MAISON & OBJET. The lamps are produced in the U.K. and are available for purchase internationally at prices from $190-$440. The dainty little shades perched like fancy hats are sold separately from $65-$78. For more Abigail check our her delightful decor-centric blog.

Art Donovan's La Luna Torchieres

la luna torchieres
My favorite lighting and steampunk genius, Art Donovan recently contacted me to show off a new set of one-of-a-kind pieces. The piece above is the 'La Luna' Torchiere. It is made of cast bronze and with a hand-painted shade that looks like a big full moon. The posts of the lamps are solid bronze and cast acrylic. The lamp shade is painted on the sides in what he calls "Museum Blue" (textured, translucent tones of burnt umber and phthalo blue). Each of the two Rococo lamp bases are mirror images of each other with slight variations. They are signed and dated by Art Donovan.

Art says the pair of torchieres were inspired by the time he spent curating the world's first Steampunk Art Exhibition at the Museum of the History of Science, the University of Oxford, UK. Over the last couple of years he got bitten by the steampunk bug. Steampunk combines modern technology with a style sensibility taken from the Victorian era. These torchieres capture a bit of an Art Nouveau sensibility with a slightly spooky edge. I could easily picture them in a movie lighting the lab of some madly brilliant and misunderstood scientist. The pair of torchieres measure 33" tall x 13" wide and are $9500.

For The Love Of Minerals: The Designs Of Brenda Houston

brenda Houston jewelry
Sometimes it's hard to improve on what nature provides. Few designers understand that as well as Brenda Houston who incorporates natural minerals into her jewelry and home decor designs. Houston has always been attracted to the mystical and healing properties of natural minerals. She started working with them more than 15 years ago and after traveling extensively she conceptualized a collection of lamps and accessories that make the most of the natural beauty of the stones.

The sculptural qualities of the minerals used reveal themselves in lamps, artwork and jewelry created by an artisan using select stones and gold wire. Large agate slices sit atop hardwood bases. Minerals have been used as bases to form simply spectacular lamps or sit alone mounted for contemplation and enjoyment. Each piece is signed and the couture lamps are available at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. The lamps range from $1500 to $3200; the tabletop pieces are about $500 to $5000 and the tables are about $1500 each.

The Less Lamp: Lighting That's Customizable with a Pickaxe

The Less Lamp is perfect if you have a contemporary decor scheme and are looking for a stand-out piece that's truly your own. Shaped like a large suspended egg, the lamp is delivered as a solid black oval sphere that must be punctured and broken in order for any light to escape. And it conveniently comes with a small pickaxe made especially for the job. Looks like a lot of fun but you'll want to plan carefully and not overdo it -- you can always add more holes but you can't take them back if you crack the whole thing in half. Available at the Moma Store for $875.

The 'Ray & Stevie' Pendant Light

We've covered light fixtures made of sunglasses before and although it's an idea that will never fit it with my home's decor I must say the concept is growing on me and I especially like this 'R&S' (Ray & Stevie) pendant light by J.P. Meulendijks. The design is incredibly simple, consisting simply of 18 "reservoir dogs" sunglasses arranged into a circle. The result is an interesting piece of art and, when you turn it on, fun sunglass-shaped shadows on the walls and ceiling. Available in both black and white the lamp goes for just over $200.

Table Lamps by Lorin Marsh

Table lamps are one of those decor accessories that can completely change the look of a room without necessarily making a bold or dramatic statement. Lorin Marsh has table lamp designs that can either fit in with whatever you've got now or maybe inspire you to go in a new direction. Hand-blown Murano glass, Italian alabaster, and sleek metal are the design materials, and they're put together into a wide variety of shapes and colors. Classic and understated but hardly plain, these lamps are gorgeous. I love several of them but my favorite is the Kyoto lamp.

Inhabit Builtby Lamps

The Builtby lamps by Inhabit are fun because you can either design your own or choose one from their preselected designs with cutesy names like Chump Change, Even Steven and Mack Daddy. The personalized way is definitely the way to go, if only because their selection website is really easy and fun to use. The color scheme is rather firmly entrenched in the hipster modern with colors like periwinkle, pea green and orange but you can do something a little more stark by combining silver, white and wenge wood blocks. I'd love to see this with more color options though. The price varies depending on selections but most lamps are in the $200 range.

Union Street Glass

Union Street Glass is no fly-by-night operation, Glassblower Guy Corrie and his wife and business partner Leanne first started their business in 1980. Now the company has a 10,000 square foot studio in Richmond, CA. Guy works with a small team of artists making light fixtures, lamps and other glass objects. They have also worked with a production team in the Czech Republic to develop a line of stemware. The pieces come in several different product lines each with an overarching design sense. My favorite is the Urchin, brightly colored pieces with crystal spikes. These pieces are all handmade in their Northern California studio. The elliptical platter shown here comes in ten vivid colors and sells for $770.

Tom Dixon Designs in the U.S. this Summer

If you've already heard of Tom Dixon then you'll be glad to know his designs are making the move the to the States this summer. And if you haven't heard of him well then a taste of his work is pictured here, Copper Shade Pendants. They're plastic polycarbonate pendant globes coated internally with copper that look equally beautiful hanging solo or in a large group. Other designs of his that catch my eye are the Fresh Fat Easy Chair and the Spin articulated table candelabra.

Birzi Lamp

Carlo Forcolini and Giancarlo Fassina designed the Bizri Lamp for Luceplan, with the idea that the lamp could be played with and shaped as its owner saw fit. It is made out of flexible, heat-resistant silicone, which can be tilted, turned inside out or simply left to stand upright. It uses a 60W bulb and comes in white, green and orange, casting a glow through the silicone and throughout the room, though careful shaping of the lamp will allow you to spotlight a particular area, if desired. Price: $84.

Sven Light

Solid lamp shades look dramatic, but in many rooms, the way that they limit light can be a big drawback. The Sven Light seems to have taken that into its design, which seems to have had a strip removed from the shade. The lamp is made from spun aluminum and has 24 LEDs shining down and 16 LEDs shining up. Currently, they are available in black and white, but a red version is due for release within a few months. Price: $475.

The brass twigs, antiqued slightly, accentuate the modern shape of the base and shade. Lux List: Favorite Egg-cellent Items

Designers love eggs. Eggs have beautiful, clean lines and a great shape. The egg shape is perfectly symmetrical when cut vertically, but has a soft slope that draws the eye along its curves when viewed as a whole. Egg shapes can and do appear just about anywhere anwhere, in both small and large sizes. We've noticed this, as egg-shapes have come up repeatedly on Luxist, but we still have our favorites. Let's face it: some egg designs work better than others.  These are some of the good ones:

Vivian Alexander Egg Purses - These novel purses are made out of real Rhea egg shells. They are enameled and decorated to perfection by hand with a variety of precious and semi-precious stones. The interior of the purses are lined with silk and they retail from $1000-7000. The Chanticleer Purse, pictured, costs $2,875.
