Caboche Pendant Lamp

Clear, glass-like globes made of polymethylmetacrylate make up the Caboche Pendant Lamp, a suspended light fixture with a truly unique look. The halogen light is at the center of the suspension, but it is topped wit a white-matte shade that helps direct the light downward and through the globes. It was designed by Patricia Urquiola & Eliana Gerotto and made in Italy. This medium-sized lamp is priced at $1,493. The designers are also offering small and large versions, at $708 and $2,580, respectively.

Birzi Lamp

Carlo Forcolini and Giancarlo Fassina designed the Bizri Lamp for Luceplan, with the idea that the lamp could be played with and shaped as its owner saw fit. It is made out of flexible, heat-resistant silicone, which can be tilted, turned inside out or simply left to stand upright. It uses a 60W bulb and comes in white, green and orange, casting a glow through the silicone and throughout the room, though careful shaping of the lamp will allow you to spotlight a particular area, if desired. Price: $84.

Duo Soundolier Speaker Lamp

The Duo Soundolier is a hybrid gadget that combines a sound system and a lamp, which allows you to get maximum functionality from your decor without the extra effort of trying to conceal speakers in the room somewhere. The high quality speakers are omnidirectional and because they are located near the top of the floor lamps, they are excellent for creating surround sound in a home theater. No extra wiring is needed because the system utilizes wireless audio, receiving signals directly from a wireless transmitter (the "maestro") with a 200-ft range and multiple channels to avoid interference with other networks.

The Duo took the CES Best of Innovations Award in the Home Theater Audio category this year. Price: $280 each.

The Gaffer's Bounce Lamp

Doesn't this lamp look like it's ready to sail off into the sunset? The Gaffer's Bounce lamp was created by motion picture gaffer Edward Cohen and sculpted by David Johnson and uses some of the principles that a gaffer uses to light a movie. The light uses a 20-watt floodlight and has a polycarbonate reflector which creates soft diffuse light. The body of the lamp is made from a zinc alloy metal and the lamp is powered by a 12-volt adapter. The lamp sells for $99.95 and includes two reflectors, one in the shape of a boat sail and the other as an oval.

Spaltana Jade Cong Lamp

When you have a jade cong as your base you pretty much can't go wrong with your lamp. This luminous lamp from Spaltana is made from a solid jade cong, a Chinese jade artifact which is square on the outside and circular on the interior. The four corners of the cong represent the four elements of water, fire, metal and wood and the four directions. The circular interior represents the connection to the sky. The Spaltana lamps are made of veined dark green jade and each pillar has a decorative motif carved in each of the four corners. The jade cong sits on a poplar base and the lamp shade is made from pongee silk. These rare table lamps sell for $1800.

Surreal Lucellino Lamp

Form and function are well-combined in this unusual Lucellino table lamp, since the light is just as useful as it is artistic. It pretty much goes without saying, however, that your appreciation for this particular piece will be proportional to your appreciation for surrealist art. The lamp is made from brass and plastic, with hand-finished goosefeather wings and a 50 watt non-halogen bulb. The wire-like mount is flexible, so you can situate the light exactly where you want it to be, though the designer recommends that the light be placed about 13" high. Price: $650.

Adukini Light

The folks at Mathmos have been doing amazing things with lighting ever since they created the Lava lamp. A few months ago their supercool Thaw light made the rounds at some of the hot blogs. Now check out the Adukini. This charming little metal bean is a rechargeable light which cycles through a cycle of soothing colors. The light is designed as an indoor/outdoor item and is splashproof. It comes in three different color shifts, red to blue, blue to green and red to green. A silicone button on the base turns the light off and on and you can freeze the light when it hits a hue your like. The Aduki is made of polished die-cast zinc and thermoplastic and sells for $77.

Enchanted Forest Floor Lamp

There isn't anything wrong with giving your decor an escapist bent. After all, your home is your place to escape from the rest of the world and (unless you work at home) from the obligations of your job. The Enchanted Forest Floor Lamp alone isn't enough to transport you to another time and place, but it's a good start. Designed by Michael Aram, the aluminum floor lamp looks remarkably like a tree branch - discounting the electric wiring - and adds a a bit of nature-inspired fantasy to any room it is placed in. The cream fabric shade adds a warm, natural glow to the light. Price: $1,520.

Leaf Lamp, Design Hotness For Your Desk

Few desk lamps come with as big of a buzz as the leaf lamp designed by Yves Behar for Herman Miller. It was even written up by Businessweek earlier this year. The leaf lamp is an LED crowd pleaser which lets the user customize intensity and color in order to set a mood or a location. The vertical blade of the leaf light swivels and the range of motion allows the user to have an intense lighting or a more ambient experience. The leaf remains cool and the LEDs use less than 12 watts of power and use 40% less energy than a compact flourescent light. The light is available in red, white, black, nickel or polished aluminum and start at $499.

Sven Light

Solid lamp shades look dramatic, but in many rooms, the way that they limit light can be a big drawback. The Sven Light seems to have taken that into its design, which seems to have had a strip removed from the shade. The lamp is made from spun aluminum and has 24 LEDs shining down and 16 LEDs shining up. Currently, they are available in black and white, but a red version is due for release within a few months. Price: $475.

Fold Lamp

The Fold Lamp gets its name from the fact that it is actually folded out of one large sheet of black, powder-coated aluminum. Its overall shape is fairly traditional, so if it were not for the color, you might not even notice that there was anything unusual about it. The only thing that distracts from its all-black look is the red power cord extnding from the base. Due to the material, this isn't a great choice to illuminate an entire room, but it would make a good accent piece and would work on a bedside table, where the light needs to be confined to a relatively small area. Price: $340.

Bourgie Lamp

Black lights are often only put to use around Halloween, but this particular rendition of the concept - an entirely black light, as opposed to a black light bulb - is suitable for year-round use. The Bourgie Lamp was designed by Ferruccio Laviani for Kartell. Though it at first appears to be a fairly traditional baroque-style lamp, it is made out of high-quality, transparent polycarbonate, so the light shines through the entire piece. If black just isn't your thing, the lamp is also available in clear. In either color, the height of the lamp can be adjusted to 27, 29 or 31 inches. Price: $287.

Cobra Table Lamp

It was tempting to make some sort of last "snakes on a..." reference for this unusual lamp, but the Cobra Lamp is only snakelike in appearance, not involving any actual snakes. It was designed by Elip Martinelli in 1968 and features a swiveling joint that allows the lamp to extend from a Pac Man-like shape into that of a striking cobra, hence the name. The table lamp is UL approved and a good deal more visually interesting than the average desk lamp. Price: $890 (orig. $1,250)

Roses on the Vine Lamp

roseslampIt takes a bit of time to appreciate the Roses on the Vine lamp created by Studio Job. Look at it quickly it just seems like a snarl of red and green but the red and green Swarovski crystals on the base of the lamp form roses and foliage. The lamps were created for the 2005 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards, held at the New York Public Library. Each lamp is numbered according to the table upon which it was placed for the awards ceremony, there are 50 total. It sells for $2,900 at Moss. Maybe it's just the red and green but something about this lamp puts me in mind of the upcoming holiday season.

TofU Lamp

The square shape of the ToFU lamp, designed for the Yamagiwa company, references the bland Japanese food. The lamp is made of methacrylate (PMMA) and aluminum and uses a halogen bulb. The lamp comes in two sizes, the larger of which is 11.5h x 14.25w and sells for $640 at the MoMA store. It is also part of the MoMA collection.
