Edox Ladies Royal Lady Luxury Chronograph Watch

There is no coincidence that this Edox watch sounds as though it was named after a boat. The "Royal Lady Luxury" is meat to be a yacht themed ladies piece from the Swiss brand that comes with a relatively affordable price. The Royal Lady Luxury Chronograph watch is 36mm wide in steel with blue segments in the bezel and a mother of pearl dial. The look is stately and bold. Attractive, but not in too girly a manner.

Inside the watch is a Swiss Ronda quartz chronograph movement. I like the steel outlined chronograph subdials on the face against the mother of pearl. The case is attached to a white rubber strap and retails for $2,100.

Hysek Lady Stealth Watch

The only things stealthy about this watch is that it is a watch. For artistic purposes Hysek created a complex metal case (available in steel, gold, or two tone - and even with decorated engraved surfacing). At 37mm wide, the actual watch dial itself is tiny - being in the middle of the case between the bezel and some deep skeletonization. This small space requires (for practicality) a Swiss quartz movement. The design is fascinating, I don't know how good it will look on female wrists, but it is fascinating. Note the articulating lugs meant to wrap the long 51mm tall case over smaller wrists. The strap is tapered alligator. Why did they call it the "Lady Stealth" watch? No idea - isn't the point of something like this to get noticed?

Perrelet Turbine XS Ladies Watch

The oft talked about Perrelet Turbine watch collection gets its first ladies model with Turbine XS. It looks to use the original Perrelet Turbine case that was about 43mm wide - though it could be smaller. The case is in either steel or titanium and DLC black coated. The design is a fascinating mixture between sport and luxury. With the spinning dial turbine allowing diamonds set on the dial to flash with movement of the wrist. More diamonds are set in the bezel and on the lugs. Instead of the original rubber strap a satin one is used.

The black on black dial is sporty for sure, but the diamonds are formal. I just can't figure out what to call the watch (sporty or something else) - though I think the type of woman who likes wearing aviator gloves with high heels will pull this timepiece off smashingly. The movement is a Swiss made automatic. The watch will be officially debuted soon.

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Lady Watch For 2011

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Lady Watch For 2011
2011 doesn't have a ton of new Roger Dubuis watches for women (in fact, I think it has less), but some of the new models are more polished and refined versions of the existing collection. Here is the 36mm wide Roger Dubuis Excalibur Lady. I really like this watch because it has a nice jewelry side and a nice mechanical watch side. The new dial is also symmetrical, which I think suits the Excalibur design a lot. You actually don't need to get the watch with all the diamonds - so those are optional. Plus, Roger Dubuis offers the case in steel, or white or rose gold. I don't always understand why brands offer watches in both white gold and steel, but whatever.

Inside the watch is the in-house made RD821 automatic movement. The decoration is real nice, and it is also COSC Chronometer certified for accuracy - which is really rare in watches like this. The diamond studded version of the Excalibur Lady is limited to 88 pieces, and has a massive 5.7 carats of stones on it. Because 8 is a lucky number in China, and 88 means nothing here, the amount of the limited edition pretty much tells you that Roger Dubuis expects to sell most of these in Asia.

David Yurman "The Classic" Ladies Watch

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Luxury Shopping

David Yurman
Still haven't gotten her something for Valentine's day (I know I haven't)? Well here is another option that shouldn't be too tough to find given David Yurman's pretty good distribution. This is "The Classic" watch that comes in 30mm wide and 38mm wide styles in steel or gold, or steel and gold. The name could be better (no idea who they trademarked "Classic"), but the styling is is certainly acceptable. The easy-to-read dial comes with optional diamonds (either all or mixed with Roman numerals), and is mother of pearl. Inside the watch is a Swiss quartz movement, and you can get the watch with the steel bracelet (my choice) or with an alligator strap. Price as seen is $2,600.

JeanRichard Aquascope Lady Night Watch

JeanRichard Aquascope Lady Night Watch
Handling the new for 2011 JeanRichard Aquascope Lady Night (and light model as well) I wondered who the type of woman to wear this watch might be. It could also be a man - given the fact that JeanRichard used the same 44.5mm wide steel case for this women's model as the men's model. The differences are the dial and the bezel - also the available black satin fabric strap. Development costs for this watch weren't high, but it is nice. The most appealing aspect for women will be the diamonds used on the dial for many of the hour markers. The dial is also given a new treatment, having a sort of retro 1960s look to it.

No amount of diamonds or satin straps can take away the fact that this is a dive watch at heart. It has 300 meters of water resistance and a rotating diver's bezel. Put a rubber or leather strap on it and I think men will take to it in Asia. Inside the watch is the JR1000 automatic movement that JeanRichard uses in most of its three-hand watches. As I said, the watch is available in this "Night" version, as well as a white model. Look for the JeanRichard Aquascope Lady watch soon.

The Fashion Statement: Haute Couture's Lightness of Being

The Haute Couture Spring 2011 shows have yet to wrap up in Paris this week and, already, we know the end of the story. Designers are walking the tightrope between pale blush, pinks and nudes on the one side, and bright saturated jewel tones on the other. Similarly, styles are either soft, feminine and ethereal or dramatic and rich.

"There's a sense of lightness that we're seeing, particularly in the materials," says Joanna Manganaro, an editor specializing in womenswear at trend forecasting firm Stylesight. "Chiffon, tulle--everything is done in a light-handed way. It feels featherweight. It's something more modern, more uplifting."

That was clearly the case with Givenchy. Riccardo Tisci, a designer better known for being dark and severe, delivered a collection of gowns in pale yellows, barely-there pinks and light nudes as a tribute to Butoh dander Kazuo Ohno. In the end, he remained true to his reputation for boldness. When the models turned, they revealed the backs of the gowns that were embroidered in neon orange, chartreuse and fuchsia.

Christian Dior (pictured above) had a more traditional view of things. John Galliano paid tribute to René Gruau, an illustrator who created the house's iconic images from the '40s and '50s. Remember Dior's New Look from the '40s? Galliano (who has a new look himself--a shag haircut) reinterpreted the New Look in in electric blue, fuchsia, brown, emerald green and red taffeta and satin. One of the highlights was a flaring white skirt topped with a burnt-orange jacket with shoulders out-to-there.

Paul Picot C-Type Watch For Women

Paul Picot C-Type Watch
The Paul Picot C-Type is a very under-recognized sport watch, and now it is also a very under-recognized sport watch for women. Sad that more people won't ever see or hear of this watch because it is pretty nifty. Coming in mostly white, the C-Type for the ladies is 32mm wide in a steel case with large rotating diver's style bezel and a mother-of-pearl dial. The face of the watch also has a series of diamond hour makers. The transition between sport and chic in smooth - Paul Picot does femme activity watches well in my opinion.

Inside the watch is a Swiss automatic mechanical movement and it has a domed sapphire crystal. Like any good diver's watch, the C-Type is water resistant to 300 meters. When you are tired of the gleaming white look of it, you can swap out the white rubber checkerboard patterned strap for a black one.

Chopard Imperiale Women's Watches

The larger 40mm wide versions of this redo of the Chopard Imperiale collection (from the 1990s) don't look too far off from a man's model. Don't be mistaken though, these are watches for the ladies. In steel and rose gold, they will come in 36mm wide and 40mm wide versions. There are also alligator strap or metal bracelet options. Don't forget the available diamond decoration on the bezel. Dials have mother-of-pearl, while the look of the watches resemble what a man's watch dipped in fairy dust might look like. There is almost Cartier like quality to them, but the bold hands are all Chopard in design. The pieces are not only attractive, but also legible.

Inside the smaller 36mm wide models are Swiss quartz movements, with dials that are pretty handsome looking (in a feminine sort of way). Inside the larger 40mm wide models are Swiss automatic chronograph movements (likely an ETA 2894). Look for these new Chopard Imperiale watches soon.

Harry Winston Premier Lady Chronograph Watch

Harry Winston (the watch arm) makes a living on high-end women's watches with a healthy amount of diamonds and quartz movements. Here however they are retaining the diamond part of the equation, but offering women a mechanical timepiece. The Premier Lady Chronograph is of the same design vein as the also new Harry Winston Midnight Chrono Tourbillon, but this women's watch pulls the design aesthetic off much (much) better. The mannerisms of the dial are new to Harry Winston. They actually remind me a lot of Boucheron.

Each watch comes in an 18k gold case that is 39mm wide with diamond set cases and dials. Large diamonds line the bezel and lugs, while diamonds are set around the periphery of the dial, as well as in the chronograph subdials. Probably the most "blinged out" chrono I've seen. While the subdials have their hands in the normal position, the dials are of different sizes for a faux asymmetrical look. The subdials also have mother-of-pearl elements.

Coming in three dial colors (silver, blue, and anthracite), the watch has a total of 317 (4.4 carats) of diamonds all over it. While I am not sure what the movement inside the watch is, it has the same layout as a Swiss ETA 2894 automatic movement - which might be what is inside. A good looking - sort of sporty feeling - lady's watch make ultra lux by all the diamonds.

Hamilton 'Lady Hamilton' Vintage Watches For 2010

Once, most ladies' watches use to look like this, delicate little things that felt like jewelry with watch movements in them. That was about 100 years ago, and while Hamilton was still American, it made lots of these. Today watches like this aren't common - at least not newly made ones. But with the throw-back kick that is so popular, Hamilton has decided to give it a shot. Maybe they will sell? There is always that post-modern flapper crowd to market to right?

'Lady Hamilton' was the name given to Hamilton watches... for ladies back them. So the new models are called the "Lady Hamilton Vintage" watches. Seems to make sense. Small, at 15mm wide by 28.55mm long, these watches are pretty true to their historic sizes. In steel, they come in either black or gold PVD coated tones as well. The dials come in black or white, complete with art deco inspired faces. Hamilton is even making a few of these available with diamonds on the case. Priced from $545.

Vacheron Constantin Lady Kalla Flame Watch In The Flesh

Filed under: Jewelry, Timepieces / Watches

lady kalla watch
Over a year ago I wrote about a new jewelry watch from Vacheron Constantin known as the Lady Kalla Flame. It used a new type of gem cut known as the "flame cut." Click on the link above to learn more about the technical details of the watch. In short, it uses a small manually wound mechanical Vacheron Constantin movement - tiny really. The main show are the 200 flame cut diamonds all over the watch - set in an interesting manner that help emphasize the particular shape of the cut. The dial itself is also shaped like the flame cut stones.

Based on the images alone from last year I wasn't sure if the stones would make for a good base on which to build a stunning women's haute jewelry watch. Vacheron Constantin is known for pretty sexy jewelry watches - so their little flame watch should have made a big splash. You need a sexy watch to go with over 36 carats of precious stones.

Finally I was able to see the Lady Kalla Flame watch myself. It is a very emotional design, a watch third, ultra-high end piece of jewelry second, and a unique design experiment first. It is a success but I am afraid it is either ahead of or behind its time. It is an optimistic wild design for era of more flagrant spending and wealth. It is about as sober feeling as a tray of martinis. Not what most people call for in this time of subdued, conservative wealth.

RSW Wonderland Ladies Watch

Wow, OK, well RSW has made something new indeed. Do I like it? Not particularly, but I am not a woman or the target market of this piece. I am generally a fan of their men's watches, but this model is really 'outside the box,' if you know what I mean (although it looks like a box). RSW has created a unique organic pattern over the dial and pushed the watch face it self in the corner. The piece is more art than functional jewelry. The case is in steel (also available with a gold PVD coating). Size is 31mm wide and 33mm tall. You can even get the case and dial done with diamonds (9 on the case, and 104 on the bezel). Crystal is sapphire. Lots of dial options including gray (pictured), black, or mother-of-pearl, also with diamonds. While Wonderland watch is weird, there is a lot of nice features including the case design and the dial itself. For the right fashion-forward woman I think this would be an interesting piece. Probably for for everyday use, but as a unique, not super expensive, jewelry piece, it could fit the bill.

Ulysse Nardin Classico Lady Watch

Complimenting the newer Ulysse Nardin men's collection of Classico watches, they have released a lady's version. This one has a diamond and jewel created exotic bird. It is supposed to be emotional, but I am not sure it is more than just a bit gaudy. In addition to the jewels the dial is made from a complex to make enamel. The 35mm wide case is in 18k white gold. While the design of the dial is a bit blase for me, I can't deny the jewelry-like effort involved in producing it. what I do like is the shape of the lugs and the crown with a ring of sapphires around it. The blue of the sapphires and the enamel melds nicely with blue alligator use for the strap (starting to get more popular these days).

Inside this ladies watch is an automatic movement with a decorated 22k gold rotor. It is visible though the caseback sapphire crystal, and is likely more impressive to see than the watch dial itself. All of the parts are in the right place and I am sure that with the next version Ulysse Nardin will supply the Classico Lady watch with more impressive dial imagery.

Nina Ricci N030 Ladies Watch

Lots of time and effort goes into trying to make new and interesting watch cases and dial designs. The possibilities are next to endless - especially with women's watches. New from Nina Ricci is this N030 watch that uses two visual ellipses to create the watch dial and elongated lug structure. The watch itself is contained in a plump little case with the crown at its apex and a neatly made dial in a few styles including machine engraving style decoration in white, mother of pearl, chocolate, mauve, or standard white. Other options include dials with Roman numerals, baton markers, or "NINA," one letter for each of the points of the dial). I appreciate it when "artistic" watches such as this aren't too hard to read.

I am curious as to what a timepiece such as this looks like on someone's wrist. The unique shape could prove to be quite nice as it curves over a feminine hand. The case itself is in steel and polished, but is also available with a PVD coated rose gold finish. More options include case decoration of either 12 or 45 diamonds. With the strap there are still more options including at least six different versions available. The N030 is really going to be a diverse watch give all the options, owners of the watch might never meet someone else with the exact same combination watch. Inside is Swiss Ronda quartz movement. Crystal is mineral but with a special sapphire treatment over it to help protect against scratches. Now all they need is a good name to go with the watch collection.
