The Fashion Statement: Top Ten Trends for Spring 2011

New York fashion week at Lincoln Center is a wrap and we've tallied up the results. In a word? '70s. Want more words? Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver.

Fashion weeks in London, Paris and Milan have yet to dictate the top ten trends of Spring of next year, but here's an early take.

SHORTS: Everyone, and we mean everyone, showed shorts in their spring collections. Whether short and roomy at Badgley Mischka or long and blouse-y at Thakoon or almost Capri-length at Ralph Lauren, shorts are going to be the get for spring.

STUDIO 54: There were so much '70s and early '80s references this week, I could hear Charlie commercials in my head. Halston, famed in that era, showed drape-y colorful maxi dresses and caftans that could have been lifted straight out of the archives. Marc Jacobs showed brightly colored pantsuits and full-length halter dresses.

PRINT MADNESS: Spring is traditionally all about florals. Jason Wu's breezy blouses had cut-out posies. DNKY had tiny flower prints on youthful dresses. Michael Angel went the painterly route with a collection of beautiful multi-colored frocks.

FEMININE VERSUS MASCULINE: Jill Stuart typified the feminine push/masculine pull with high-water tuxedos followed by flouncy, frilly dresses accessorized with masculine belts. The juxtaposition was stunning.

CANDY COLORS: Michael Kors trotted out fuchsia and green. Rebecca Taylor favored orange. Cynthia Rowley went for yellow. Candy colors ruled the day.

L.A.M.B. Signature Grandvale Hobo in Static Logo, Handbag of the Day

L.A.M.B. Grandvale Hobo Static Lobo BagThe pattern on this L.A.M.B. Signature Grandvale Hobo in Static Logo (it rhymes) is supposedly inspired by television static but I don't really see it -- looks more like smears and smudges than the snow I remember on the tv screen as a kid. Regardless it's an eyecatching design and I do like it, especially with the front angled zip detail and single shoulder strap that keeps everything looking tight. It's made of coated canvas and has a top-zip closure (the front one is non-functioning) with several interior pockets as well as a striped lining. $295

L.A.M.B Veena Sandals

veena sandals If you're looking to add a pair of flirty sandals to your collection, L.A.M.B's Veena Sandals ($325) would make a great addition. The slouchy t-strap sandals have three little pink and beige flowers at the vamp and an elasticized strap making for a snug and individual fit. Given its understated color, the Veena Sandals could compliment a wide range of outfits. If you are of the vertically challenged group and desire some height, myself included, you'll appreciate the five inch heel with a one inch platform. Also available in grey.

L.A.M.B. Ultraviolet Briolette Leather Bag, Handbag of the Day

L.A.M.B. Ultraviolet Briolette Leather BagGwen Stefani has done it again. The L.A.M.B. Ultraviolet Briolette Leather Bag is fresh, youthful and classy, and surprisingly affordable.

This baby yellow, embroidered leather bag is given an unexpected edge by the inclusion of dark nickel zippers. The bag is smallish (10½"W X 6"H X 3"D), so the zippers are subtle enough to pass at dressier events. A closer look will let those around you know that you've got personality and style; this is not just a run-of-the-mill purse.

We don't know how Ms. Stefani keeps her prices so low, but her youthful designs are well-served by the practice. For those of us who scoff at overspoiled teens, this bag is a refreshingly appropriate gift. And, as this goes easily from the classroom to the dance floor, it's sure to get plenty of use.

The L.A.M.B. Ultraviolet Briolette Leather Bag is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for a steal: $195.00.

L.A.M.B. Melbourne Graphic Satchel, Handbag of the Day

L.A.M.B. Melbourne Graphic SatchelThe L.A.M.B. Melbourne Graphic Satchel is an edgy throwback to the 80s by one of our favorite platinum selling (and haired) celebrities, Gwen Stefani.

The Aussies do love their 80s gear, so perhaps that's why this new bag from L.A.M.B. is called "The Melbourne Graphic Satchel." We love the gritty painted bricks effect, making it look like a wall someone graffitied -- and then adorned with a logo patch.

As with most of the L.A.M.B. line, the 7 1/2"H x 13"W x 5"D bag is cruelty-free PVC. This is a perfect little satchel for denim days and nights out on the town.

The L.A.M.B. Melbourne Graphic Satchel is available from Neiman Marcus for $295.00.

L.A.M.B. Deco Fisher Gilded Clutch, Handbag of the Day

What makes a better combination for fall than metallic tones and a mixture of patent, matte and suede leathers? Not much. L.A.M.B. brings a new, eye-catching design to the forefront of your wardrobe with the Deco Fisher Gilded Clutch. The perfect compliment to evening wear or fabulous dark jeans and boots, this art-deco inspired handbag offers dual tone hardware, a magnetic snap closure, inside zipper pocket, and cotton faille lining for just $245. There is also a matching hobo handbag if you just can't resist having more than one option with this fantastic design. (5 1/2" x 11" x 1 1/2")

L.A.M.B. Hawke Ceylon Satchel, Handbag of the Day

L.A.M.B. Hawke Ceylon SatchelNew from the impossibly versatile Gwen Stefani, the L.A.M.B. Hawke Ceylon Satchel is bright and bold with an unusual color pairing: beigey-gold and fire engine red.

L.A.M.B. is actually becoming known for odd-and-off-color choices, as well as expertly made, sturdy bags with great lines. We love the sporty double stripe down the middle, and the way the piping on the sides curves like the heel of a tennis shoe. It's rare to see a bag this bold that would dress down so perfectly.

To dress this bag up, we recommend removing the shoulder strap (it looks better without it anyway) and pairing this with an outfit that incorporates neither color -- preferably white or a neutral shade (it would look a little Hot Topic with black). Got patent red shoes? This is the bag with which to wear them, and don't skimp on the red lipstick, either.

The L.A.M.B. Hawke Ceylon Satchel is available from Neiman Marcus for $495.00.

L.A.M.B. Orissa Tri-Color Clutch, Handbag of the Day

L.A.M.B. Orissa Tri-Color ClutchThe L.A.M.B. Orissa Tri-Color Clutch is the perfect, understated, luxuriously soft purse for those with a vintage or boho flair.

The "buttery soft" imported leather is boldly dyed in a dark brick red, mustard yellow, dirty sky blue, and black to create a simple, yet interesting color palate reminiscent of the 1960s, but with a structured, neat design that brings the look into the new millennium. In a different combination of colors, this might look like an art deco piece, but as it draws from many different decades past, its look is completely modern and perfect for carrying with jeans and cowboy boots or a full fur coat.

The L.A.M.B. Orissa Tri-Color Clutch is lined in cotton, and, like most similar clutches, has a magnetic closure on the flap.

Available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $275.00.

L.A.M.B.'s New 'Soft Signature Wiltshire' Tote, Handbag of the Day

This new addition to the L.A.M.B. line offers a sizable package for a reasonable price. Large enough to hold a magazine, water bottle, full size wallet, sweater and other small necessities, the L.A.M.B. 'Soft Signature Wiltshire' Tote comes in three color combinations, although I think the logo-version is my favorite. With leather and goldtone hardware accenting the bag, eight-inch strap drop, and matching zip-pouch for small items this tote is a simple yet stylish combination for $295. (16 1/2" x 11 1/2" x 7")

L.A.M.B. Signature Hopewell Bag, Handbag of the Day

The color scheme of this L.A.M.B. Signature Hopewell Bag reminds me of crisp spring mornings and freshly cut grass, and the structured canvas and leather design make it trendy and stylish. Features include a zipper along the sides and base that unzips to increase the bag's capacity, gold metal hardware, rolled leather handles with link attachments and a 6 1/2" drop, large flat pockets with magnetic closures on both the front and the back, a primarily open top with a magnetic closure tab, and a leather lined L.A.M.B. nameplate on the pocket-loaded and textiled-lined interior. $420

L.A.M.B. Love Pavia Hobo, Handbag of the Day

The Love Pavia Hobo from Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. line is not your typical hobo-type bag. In fact, it looks more like a garden-variety purse (or shoulder bag, as some might say) than anything else. That being said, it is a nice looking bag. It features a body made of smooth, white leather that is accented with navy blue velvet. The clasp, charms and chain links on the shoulder strap are all of gold-tone metal, as are the protective feet on the bottom of the bag. It measures 13" x 8" x 4". Price: $650.

L.A.M.B. Love - Capri Satchel, Handbag of the Day

We heard about Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. handbags a few months ago, when it was announced that the bags would be available for Spring 2007. We also heard that there would be two lines within that collection: Signature and Love. Not available for preorder, this is the Capri Satchel from the Love line. It features contrasting stripes of smooth leather and soft, logo velvet, accented with gold hardware and an embroidered "L." It also has a tassel attached to one of the two top handles and measures 13"W x 9"H x 6"D. Price: $550.
