Kohler Announces Official Plans For The Hamilton Grand Renovation at St. Andrews

Filed under: Real Estate Developments, By Design

I have been following this renovation process of the Hamilton Grand (see above) for over a year now, and have written articles for Luxist on the process and progress of this unique renovation project.

Just yesterday more news: Kohler Co. announced the official development plans for Hamilton Grand, one of golf's most historic buildings. Located adjacent to the 255 year old Royal & Ancient Golf Club in St. Andrews, Scotland, Hamilton Grand overlooks the 18th Green of the Old Course, The West Sands Beach and the Bay of St. Andrews. When finished, Hamilton Grand will become the fourth historic property restored and renovated by Kohler Co.

Last year, Kohler Co., through its subsidiary, The Old Course Limited, purchased Hamilton Grand, In conjunction with the Kingdom of Fife, the county where St. Andrews is located. Kohler Co. then held a two-day public consultation, where it welcomed St. Andrews citizens to learn more about the plans and to provide feedback for restoring the building. The meetings were met with significant interest and support, providing meaningful discourse between developer and community.
Together, new plans were conceptualized and created.

From Hamilton Hall to the Hamilton Grand: Kohler Redesigns St. Andrews

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Real Estate Developments, By Design

When we last left Herbert Kohler, he had just purchased the large building at St. Andrews called Hamilton Hall. It was originally The St. Andrews Grand, a hotel built in the early 1900s, then became an Army barracks, then was purchased by the University of St. Andrews to house dormitory students. It was then purchased by the Wasserman Group, a real estate development group out of New York, whose plans were to build million dollar plus fractionals. This plan fell through because, in part, it did not sit well with the townspeople.

All the while, Herbert Kohler was well-known to St. Andrews, as he had purchased The Old Course Hotel, one of the great landmarks on the course at St. Andrews, in 2004. He had quietly and expertly renovated it, using many town workers and consultants. Indeed, the Managing Director of the Old Course is herself from Scotland. When Hamilton Hall became available, he purchased it in November of last year, and planned to hold an open town hall forum, asking the people of the town and interested others, for feedback as to how he should proceed with the renovation and restoration of Hamilton Hall. Here's what happened.

Yin Yang Wading Pool Lavatory

I think bathrooms lend themselves to a sense of peace naturally, if only because of the flowing water and solitude, but this Yin Yang Wading Pool Lavatory from Kohler takes inspiration from seashells and the Chinese symbol for harmony to enhance that feeling even further. It's extremely simple, with a shallow basin that has a slightly raised center to encourage unique water patterns as it flows towards the offset drain. It's all designed to inspire elegance and a sense of balance, which I think it does very well.

The Kohler Pedicure Spa

Pedicures are one of the simple pleasures in life that I think most people would agree we don't get enough of. We're all so rushed all the time that making an appointment and keeping it is sometimes the biggest challenge. But what if you had everything you needed to get a pedicure at home whenever you wanted one?

The Kohler Pedicure Spa not only provides everything the salon does, but it gives you the freedom to design your own atmosphere around it and do without the hustle and bustle of the salon. It has a whirlpool footbath with 3 Flexjet whirlpool jets, adjustable chaise lounge, matching technician chair, and faucet components. And it can be easily customized to different layouts and surround materials. $14,000

Pictured above is the Lavinia, and also available in the collection are the deeper Facet vessel and the rectangular Antilla. SoundTile Speakers for the Shower

You could go with one of those little waterproof clock radios with a handy hanging hook in your shower and have that wonderful "slightly staticky and not-even-in-stereo" sound to get you pumped up during your morning routine, or you could choose these, SoundTile loudspeakers for the shower.

From Kohler in conjunction with Polk Audio, in addition to being designed to match Kohler's WaterTile bodysprays and showerheads, the SoundTile speakers are coaxial models, marine certified, with stainless steel front grills that let sound through while keeping water out. Pretty nifty.

They are available in pairs, and depending on the finish you choose start at $295.

Thanks Rachel!

Water continuously flows over the sides of the Kohler sok Infinity Tub, pouring into a built-n channel that catches and recirculates the water for a calming, soothing soak. Recommended as the perfect fixture for the tubs, Kohler offers unique wall or ceiling mount spouts to fill them, shooting clear streams of water gracefully into the basin. Units start at $8,912.40.

Kohler's Water Tiles

Get the ultimate showering experience with Kohler's Water Tiles, which will allow you to direct water in any direction, from any space in the shower. Each tile has a shower head built into it, so you can have as many or as few shower heads as you want without losing any shower space to obtrusive plumbing fixtures. There are three different types of tiles, but all will allow you to wrap yourself in water. Two tiles are flush with the wall, featuring 22 and 54 individual nozzles. The third tile, also with 54-nozzles, is angled and allows you to direct the flow of water at a 45-degree angle to compliment the other tiles. The tiles start at $123.80 per tile and professional installation is recommended to ensure peak performance.
