Designer Op Art Cutting Boards

Wow, they really do have designer everything, don't they? These designer cutting boards by Ken Goodwin are inspired by 1960s Op Art, most specifically artist Bridget Riley. The dark and light squares are sized and placed to convey movement and shape on an otherwise flat surface. This design is called Expansion and is intended to look like a checkerboard viewed through a fisheye lens. There's also the Convergance (yes, that's how it's spelled) which came about as an experiment in doing the opposite and having the squares get smaller towards the center instead of larger.

Described as "not for the faint of heart," either of these boards would make a wonderful gift or unique addition to any kitchen. Maple and walnut, $350-$400.

Dinner Bells

I've personally always loved the idea that years ago on the farm the ringing of the dinner bell is what would call in the kids from the yard to eat, and whether these days you have a big group to summon together or just like the nostalgic decor value of a nice bell, this set of copper dinner bells will make a sweet addition to your kitchen. The set includes 3 brass bells in 3 shapes and 3 colors: and copper-finished onion bell, a silver-finished tulip bell, and a gold-finished trumpet bell. $325

Foam Bowl

A bowl that looks like a big white sponge -- everybody wants one! Designed by Marcel Wanders and made by Moooi, the idea for the Foam Bowl started as an experiment and turned into something beautiful. Created by soaking a sponge in liquid porcelain, letting it dry, and then firing it hot enough to burn the sponge away, the result is a sponge "skeleton," or a bowl that looks like it's made of foam. Pure white and porous, you'll want to be careful how much you handle it and what (if anything) you put in it. 2.25" x 8.25", $220.

Alma Fortune Cup & Saucer

I'm not one to drink my tea out of a fancy cup and saucer, but some of them can be so pretty I can see how people end up collecting them -- if even just to display and never use. But regardless whether you want to actually sip from them or just look at them, these Alma Fortune Cups and Saucers would make a beautiful addition to any China cabinet. Kind of like reading tea leaves, the design is based on the Middle Eastern tradition called Tasseography (or the reading of a person's fortune in coffee grounds) but instead of grounds the fortune is forever captured in 22k gold. No two are alike. $95

The question is: do you find out what fortune you got?

The Bugatti Volo Toaster

Filed under: Dining, Luxury Cars & Autos

Apparently Bugatti is hoping to not only fill your garage with their products, but your kitchen also. First a blender, then an espresso machine, and now a toaster. What's next, a bread machine?

Back to the toaster (though I would love a bread machine, Bugatti!). The Bugatti Volo Toaster has features including 6 browning options, extra wide bread slots, a crumpet-warming rack, and a motorized toast lifting system for the ultimate in convenience (and no more fishing for shorter slices with a fork or butter knife). Comes in stainless steel or black, £169.50.

Granite and Stone Accessories Have Gone a Bit Too Far

To me, granite counter tops are the creme de la creme of kitchen spaces but adding matching knobs is a little much. At first glance, the knobs not yet attached to the cabinetry look like pretty chess pieces but fashioned to the woodwork they make for a busy and cluttered look. The only one I think that may bring an element of sophistication to a kitchen or bathroom are the dark slate colored knobs. But I still feel like less is more.

And who would have thought to chisel granite or stone to fit a light switch? Most granite has a mottled, colorful look and in my opinion only the purist color palette would work on a wall (unless your wall is granite too which would make for a blended look). Then again I don't wear animal print or plaid so maybe my tastes lean towards monochromatic schemes. In any case, I would leave the granite and stone to counter tops and quarries and keep it off the cabinets and walls.

Second Kitchens A Hot Trend In Luxury Homes

Think about it....who really has a second kitchen? A full second kitchen? They're rare indeed, but the new trend in luxury housing is to start changing that.

People with money to spend want kitchens for both themselves and for their personal chefs and caterers, and they don't want to be bumping around together in the same space. But it's not just about whether or not you can afford it, as the building has to be approved and depending on the rules and regulations in the area an additional full kitchen may or may not be allowed. But in the areas where it does work houses generally run in the $5 million range and higher when they include 2 kitchens.

Harry Allen Banana Bowl

Wow. The minute I saw this I just knew I had to share it, if it only because it's soooooo ugly! It just goes to show that not everything expensive is classy, right? Now of course there's a small chance that I'm way off base here and that the majority of people out there think this Harry Allen Banana Bowl is a beautiful work of art, so if that's you then don't mind me! If I ever see this in someone's home I'm totally just going to respect their edgy and gutsy taste in decor!

Made of resin and plated in gold, no worries if you love it but need a different color -- 2 other options (chrome and white) are available. $120-$350

Gordon Ramsay's Cookware Collection

Given his fiery reputation you might expect chef Gordon Ramsay's cookware, dishes and stemware to have a more individual look. But his collection with Royal Doulton is restaurant ready: simple white plates (except for an aubergine charger) and user-friendly stemware that is classic and meant to let the food take the spotlight. The 10-piece stainless steel cookware set has an aluminum core and sells for $499.99. A dinner plate is $19.99 and the glasses start at $39.99 per pair.

Panier Percé: Embroider Yourself a Bowl

When you think embroidery you're probably not also thinking dishes, but the Panier Percé by Guillaume Delvigne & Ionna Vautrin is just that: a bowl you embroider yourself. It's a kit that includes a naked white glazed porcelain bowl and a set of embroidery materials/instructions of your choice. Not only is an embroidered bowl like this fairly unique to have around, but how often do you get the chance to make a project out of and create your own designer item? 136,00

The Man's Kitchen

Manly men who love to cook: here comes the kitchen of your dreams. That's the idea anyway behind Porsche Design Group and Poggenpohl's new "man's kitchen" (there's no official name yet). It's been created and crafted with the male cook in mind, which apparently means modern and sleek monochromatic stying complete with details like no-handle cabinets, high-tech audiovisual system and aluminum-finished everything. It will be available starting sometime next year.

I think it looks sleek and manly, but what do I know? Guys: did they get it right?

Vetrazzo Countertops

Check out the gorgeous countertop above. Those bright bits of red glass are actually red lenses from decommissioned traffic lights. Vetrazzo is a company that specializes in countertops made from recycled glass. Each countertop panel is made from 550 pounds of crushed recycled glass from traffic lights, windshields, and beverage bottles (there is even one beautiful cobalt blue countertop made with Skyy vodka bottles). In just this year Vetrazzo transformed over 250 tons of recycled glass into countertops. The company also works green, using a closed-loop water filtration system and working to be 100-percent solar powered by year's end.

Hand Forged Silver Tea Spoon

Next time you're sitting down for tea or coffee (like I am right now!) take a good look at the spoon you're using. Does it have much character? Individuality? Is it making the whole experience a little better just because it's there? Ha, that last one might be pushing it a little, but the point is that good silverware can really increase the "luxe" factor of any meal or dining experience.

This hand-forged silver tea spoon from Etsy is made by the seller from a block of sterling silver, with a slight pattern from hammering left visible on the handle and in the bowl of the spoon, and also the creator's initials and date stamped into the back. I think one (or a few) of these would make a great gift. $75 each.

Silver Plated Honey Bee

No diamonds and pearls here, just a classier way to serve your honey this summer. As much as I love those cute little bear-shaped honey bottles they tend to get sticky, which is nasty to put in the cabinet. Leaving them on the counter doesn't look so great either, so something like this Silver Plated Honey Jar lets you have honey on hand in a way that complements your kitchen's decor and makes your table a little prettier. It has a cute little silver honey scoop, and comes complete with a jar of Black Sage Honey by Savannah Bee Company. $45
