Kids Hotel at Atomium

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

This famous, beautiful structure is known as Atomium. Located in Belgium, it was built for the World's Fair in 1958 and is a replica of an iron molecule, enlarged 65 billion times. Atomium was not intended to be a hotel at all, but when the complex was renovated this year, a portion of the structure was turned into the Kids Sphere Hotel, which just opened this month. Unfortunately, parents can't just book their children in and take off for a romantic evening. The hotel can be reserved only for chaperoned groups.

Kid's Stuff Complete Dining Set

If you have a nice set of dishes, though luxury consumers tend to prefer basic tableware, you might not want your kids eating off of it, especially if they are very young. Not only could they have an accident, dropping a plate or bowl, but working with a knife and fork that are too large for their small hands can be quite difficult. The Kid's Stuff Complete Dining Set from Alfredo Haberli is kid sized and much more refined than those cartoon-covered plastic dish sets that are often given to children. It includes a plastic tray, porcelain bowl & plate, glass, a four piece flatware set, wooden cutting board and spreader and everything is sized to the proportions of a child, with wide grips that are easy to hold. The cutting board is designed to encourage children to cut up their own food, rather than waiting for an adult to do it for them. Price: $150.

PB Teen

Perhaps I'm just a bit late in catching on, but I didn't know that Pottery Barn had a site specifically for products for teens' rooms and back-to-school things. The site, PB Teen, is great. Unlike some of the furniture and decorative items marketed to the age range by other stores, everything appears to be very well put together and attractive - no bargain basement materials or shoddy workmanship. They offer beds, rugs, light fixtures and desks, in addition to many smaller items, including bags and bedding. They even have a selection of themed rooms to provide inspiration for someone moving into a dorm or a first apartment, as well as inspiration for parents who are looking to remodel the room of child.

Night Owl Nightlight Rugs

One shows an owl perched on a tree during the day (orange) and one shows him at night (navy), but both of these Night Owl Baby Zoo Rugs have nightlights built into them. These rugs are 100% virgin wool and are colored with natural vegetable dyes, so they are durable, soft and safe to have around kids. The floor light runs on 3 AA batteries and matches the rugs' coloring. They're $500 each, but that seems like a small price to pay to alleviate fears of the monster under the bed. Think about it: to a child, whatever it costs to get rid of the boogieman is worth it. He's a scary guy.

Custom Couture Designer's Portfolio

Once little girls are old enough to accompany their parents on shopping trips and start having an input in what they want to wear, it is not a big leap for them to want to design their own outfits. Most girls don't get the opportunity to do this, but with the Custom Couture Kit they can make their dream a reality. The design portfolio that is included has fabric swatches, pencils, sketchpad, and a questionnaire, which will help determine the final design. The design will then be made by a professional designer in New York, who will consult on color, fabric and fit, before completing the garment and sewing in a custom label bearing the designer's own name. Price: $800.
