Ernest Hemingway's African Safari Rifle Up for Auction
A remarkable double-barreled elephant gun made by London's Westley Richards in 1913 that belonged to Ernest Hemingway and was used by the famed author on safari in Africa is being offered for auction on March 14. The impressive .577-caliber Nitro Express, the starring lot at James D. Julia Auctioneers' Important Firearms sale in Fairfield, Maine, comes with the original case and accessories and is expected to fetch between $150,000 – $200,000. The 16-pound rifle, engraved with rhinos and tigers and designed to bag the biggest game, has its own chapter in the new book Hemingway's Guns: The Sporting Arms of Ernest Hemingway.

Key West's Heritage House Museum Closing

Key West is home to another historic non-profit enterprise left for dead by a thing called economics: the Heritage House Museum has closed after more than 30 years in business. The home, built in 1834 by George Carey and rescued 100 years later by the late Jessie Porter, hosted 20th century literary lights led by Robert Frost and Hemingway but simply got too expensive to maintain.

Peter Brawn bough the home for $2 million from Porter's family, and he added another $60,000 for some of its contents. There is no word on what Brawn plans for Heritage House nor, just as importantly, the Robert Frost poetry competition held every year in the Frost Cottage behind the house.

Reach Resort Rolls Out $37 Million Makeover

Filed under: Dining, Luxury Travel & Hotels

The refined Reach Resort in Key West, which boasts the area's only private natural beach, just unveiled a $37 million makeover placing it in the top rank of Keys getaways. The revamp, led by the award-winning Looney & Associates design studio, brings a fresh, contemporary, boutique hotel feel to one of Old Town Key West's longstanding favorites. Located near that great Southernmost Point Guest House for sale that we told you about recently, the Reach beach is just seven miles from the only living coral reef in North America.

Rolled out in phases over the last few months, the final step of the revamp was just completed with the opening of an outpost of New York's popular Strip House restaurant. Designed by David Rockwell, the saucy steak joint with an haute-burlesque theme - think of a restaurant run by a demure Dita Von Teese -- is becoming a popular export. As we reported recently a Strip House also just opened in San Juan's chic Condado Plaza.
