Kahlo Portrait Sets Records
Frida Kahlo's 1943 painting, Roots, broke two records when it sold at a Sotheby's auction this week. Its final price of $5.6 million not only set a record for the artist, besting a 1929 self-portrait that sold in 2000, but it set a record as the highest price received at auction by a Latin American artist. Roots is an oil-on-metal self-portrait of the artist and was offered for auction by a private collector who had owned it for 25 years.
