JW Marriott Opens Tallest Hotel in Indiana

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

jw marriott indianapolisAs our sister site AOL Travel reported, JW Marriott has opened the doors of its latest hotel, the JW Marriott Indianapolis. The 34-story hotel is the tallest in the state of Indiana. The massive hotel is aimed at attracting conventioneers with 1,005 guestrooms, 53 meeting rooms, and a 40,500-square-foot Grand Ballroom, the largest hotel ballroom in the Midwest.

Guests will be pampered in rooms with 40" LCD televisions and a plug-in panel that integrates laptops, MP3 and video players (you'll pay a $12.95 for high speed internet access and unlimited calling). The building includes a Osteria Pronto, and High Velocity, which is described as an energetic, high-tech Indianapolis sports bar.

The hotel is piece of a $450 million complex of Marriott hotels that takes up seven acres offering a total of 2,248 new hotel rooms in downtown Indianapolis. The Marriott complex is just part of an ambitious $3 billion urban investment project in downtown Indianapolis that includes the expanded Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium, and a new International Airport all designed to bring more tourism to the area. Opening rates start at $159. A video tour from local television station WISH-TV is after the jump.

Tequila Tasting in Springtime

There's something about springtime -- maybe it's all the allergens in the air -- that puts me in the mood for tequila.

It has nothing to do with any memories of a raucous margarita-filled spring break, for as regular Luxist readers well know, this blue-agave spirit is a lot more refined than that. When you drink a premium tequila, you don't need salt or a lime, just a contemplative mindset while you sip.

One great place to do a compare-and-contrast of over 100 tequilas is Salud, the lobby bar at the JW Marriott Star Pass in low-allergen Tucson, pictured above. "Lobby bar" sounds a bit dreary, this bar actually leads onto a wide deck, with fire pits and a view of the Sonoran desert. Get a snifter from $9 to $26, and perhaps kick it off with a tequila toast every night at 5:30, which is complimentary to hotel guests.

(My trip to Tucson was sponsored by Visit Tucson, and my opinions, as always, are 100% my own.)

$1 Million 'People's Inauguration Ball' for the Disadvantaged

marriottWhen the JW Marriott in Washington D.C. offered a 'build-your-own-inaugural-ball' for $1 million, Earl W. Stafford jumped at the chance to host a cross-section of our country's disadvantaged during Barack Obama's inauguration. The Marriott's package includes 300 rooms, four suites, $200,000 worth of food and drink, and a view overlooking Pennsylvania Avenue's parade route. Funded through his family's non-profit, The Stafford Foundation, the festivities are planned for Jan. 18-20 with a breakfast, luncheon, three-night's-lodging, and two-balls to boot.

The Spa at Desert Springs

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Spas

The Desert Springs JW Marriott has opened a new luxurious spa facility in Palm Desert, California. The 38,000 square-foot facility includes an organic café, Turkish hammams, digitally programmable desert rain showers, saunas, whirlpools and more in a calming setting that includes limestone and Brazilian Ipe wood and a ten-foot waterfall at check-in.

The spa uses local ingredients including locally harvested citrus and dates, which are used in the Citrus Sugar Scrub and Date Scrub. The Spa's signature body therapy, the Desert Journey, is inspired by the scents of the desert in bloom. It begins with the application of a creamy emulsion made of orange, tangerine and mandarin-scented body butter combined with a light brown sugar scrub. The therapist uses Swedish and gentle rocking techniques to calm the body, then applies hot basalt stones to the chakras and meridians. During the treatment, the therapist provides a paraffin foot treatment; a scalp, neck and shoulder massage; and reflexology to the hands and feet. Other treatments include a mud ritual, wraps and a full menu of facials. The Spa also includes a heated outdoor lap pool, cardio and strength-training equipment and a yoga studio. There is also a beauty salon that offers manicures, pedicures and hair styling.

The most luxurious option at the spa is the 600 square-foot private suite, called the Spa Sanctuary which has a private entrance and is staffed by a personal butler. The Sanctuary has a two-person hydrotherapy tub in the walled-in private courtyard and another tub indoors as well as a changing room, vanity area, digitally programmable shower, living area with a fireplace and high-definition TV. A separate Revive Suite is designed for couples and includes private treatment areas and a hydrotherapy tub for two.
