Luxist Guest Post: Chris Del Gatto of CIRCA On The Real Value of Jewelry

Filed under: Jewelry, Timepieces / Watches

Have you ever wondered what that diamond necklace that your grandmother left you would be worth if you ever wanted to sell it? We did, so we asked Chris Del Gatto, Chairman & CEO of CIRCA, the largest global buyer of fine jewelry from the public, to share some trade secrets on the true market value of jewelry.

As you can imagine, there's typically a disconnect between the public's perception of what jewelry is "worth", and the true market value of that item. True market value means the price that you would get if you were to sell the piece. This is very different from an appraisal value – what you would have to pay retail to replace an item if it were lost or stolen. What's important to realize is that when you're paying retail, you're paying for labor, marketing and the various profits made along the way.

For example, the generic yellow gold & diamond tennis bracelet that retails for $5,000, will typically cost a retailer an average of $1,800-$3,000, whereas the manufacturer's cost to make the piece would be more like $1,260 - $2,100. As someone who now owns that bracelet, and is selling it back into the marketplace, you're starting over again. You're not going to make back the profit that the manufacturer and retailer made. You also have to discount the labor that went into the piece. What you have left is the intrinsic value of the stones and the metal as your base. However, you can start adding value back if:

1) the piece is superbly designed and manufactured

2) the stone qualities are very high

3) it's a period piece, like Art Deco, Retro, etc.

4) the piece is signed by a famous maker such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co, etc.

Pink Diamond Sells for $46 million, Setting a World Auction Record

Sotheby's sells 24.78 carat pink diamond for $46 million, setting a world record
Sotheby's Geneva set a world auction record for any diamond and any jewel today when it sold an exceptionally rare and magnificent Fancy Intense Pink Emerald-cut Diamond. Weighing in at 24.78 Carats, the ring sold for for $46,158,674, well above the pre-sale estimate of $27 million to $38 million.

Four bidders competed for the gem, which is considered to be one of the most important and beautiful stones ever to come up for auction. The stone came to the market from a private collection, and has not appeared on the open market since it was purchased some 60 years ago from Mr. Harry Winston (who's namesake company won the Luxist Awards' Readers Choice Award for best jewelry line).

The diamond was bought by Patti Wong, Sotheby's Chairman in Asia, bidding on behalf of Laurence Graff, the British billionaire jeweler to the stars (and a Luxist Awards nominee for best jewelry line). Shortly after the sale, Laurence Graff named the diamond "The Graff Pink" and made the following statement: "It is the most fabulous diamond I've seen in the history of my career and I'm delighted to have bought it."

Bailey, Banks & Biddle Plans Holiday Return

Last year we wrote about the bankruptcy of jewelry retailer Finlay Enterprises which necessitated the closure of the Bailey Banks & Biddle jewelry chain. The intellectual property for Bailey Banks & Biddle was sold last November in a liquidation auction.

But the venerable retailer, which traced its roots back to 1832 in Philadelphia is being revived. Five stores have already opened in Austin, Houston and Plano, Texas as well as St. Louis and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. A new website for the company should be up in time for the holidays. The stores all opened in October in the same spots they were in before closure. BBB Group Inc. is the parent company of the new chain and former Bailey Banks & Biddle President Paul Leonard is the head of the company. National Jeweler reports that the new stores have a focus on bridal jewelry with a new in-store design studio where customers can test out sterling silver and cubic zirconia samples. Flat-screen televisions will allow customers to browse an online selection of loose diamonds. The company doesn't plan to open any more stores in 2010 but hopes to eventually expand.

Tiffany & Co. Releases Latest Blue Book

Tiffany & Co. has released the 2010-2011 Blue Book Collection, the jeweler's annual presentation of special beautiful baubles up for sale. This year's collection includes the Tiffany Majestic necklace, shown above. It took more than a year to procure the more than 300 pear-shaped and round brilliant stones and over 700 hours to create the necklace itself. The smaller stones are set into diamond florets surrounding a 30.31-carat, E color, internally flawless detachable diamond drop. The platinum mountings were individually crafted and linked to create a flexible setting that sparkles with every movement.White diamonds are showcased in the Fringe necklace which features a 20.01-carat, D color, internally flawless diamond in a rectangular modified brilliant cut with 61 round, 33 cushion and 30 marquise diamonds in platinum.

The Blue Book Collection also includes colored diamonds. A necklace based on Art Deco jewels in the Tiffany & Co. archives has a triple-drop pendant with three extraordinarily rare fancy vivid yellow diamonds-- a rectangular-shaped 13.09-carat yellow diamond and two approximately 6-carat yellow diamonds surrounded with a total of 642 round brilliant white diamonds.

Besides the diamonds there are also other stones. A 28.01-carat unenhanced Kashmir sapphire sits in a necklace of round brilliant diamonds. Another interesting piece is a new version of the popular Jean Schlumberger Bird on a Rock design, featuring a diamond-encrusted bird of 18 karat gold. This year's bird sits on a 104.66-carat cushion-shaped kunzite distinguished by a deep purplish pink hue. Check out other pieces in the gallery below.

16 Fabulous Fall Finds from J. Crew

Filed under: Apparel, Handbags, Jewelry, Timepieces / Watches, Shoes

While I can't speak for the entire Luxist team, I have a pretty good feeling that we all love the fashion offered at J. Crew. They offer well made and long lasting basics mixed with bold statement pieces presented in such a way that you'll wear them forever. Both my husband and I have sweaters and pants that we've purchased over 4 years ago and given their timeless appeal, we're still wearing them today.

J Crew's lookbook and catalog showcase trendsetting and super fashionable ensembles, but I thoroughly enjoy putting my own personal twist to what I wear and the clothing at J. Crew allows me to do just that. After a long hot and at times unbearable summer scorcher, fall's arrival is a welcomed change. It feels relaxing to be at a comfortable body temperature and have a cool breeze pass through the air. Your daily attire can have more depth and substance rather than succumbing to heat and wearing a tank top, shorts and flip flops.

Piaget Limelight 'True' Cocktail Rings

Filed under: Jewelry, Timepieces / Watches

I am not a woman, nor do I wear rings, but I will be the first to admit these are very cool. They are so cool, I think most people will almost forget these are high-end luxury goods. From the Limelight collection by Piaget, these are a new line of cocktail rings that actually look like real cocktail drinks. And I've always wondered why they were called cocktail rings... These rings are very fun and well designed. Piaget did an excellent job replicating the look of popular cocktail drinks in jewelry.

There are six rings in this particular Limelight collection, each has a name of a drink. Seen here is the Piaget Limelight Cocktail Mojito ring. It is in 18k white gold with 182 diamonds (1.52 carats). The "drink" itself is a 24 carat cushion-cut green tourmaline, with a 3 carat citrine stone cut to look like a lime - covered with a white gold and tsavorite "peel.' The "mint leaves" are emeralds. Stunning and so creative!

Other rings in the collection are equally nice and use stones and gold applicable to the look of the drink. In addition the Limelight Cocktail Mojito, there is also the Whiskey on the Rocks, Cosmopolitan, White Tonic, Blue Ocean, and Blueberry Daiquiri. Truly charming - and will not be cheap.

Piaget Finds A Spot On Bond Street With New Boutique Store

Filed under: Jewelry, Timepieces / Watches, Luxury Shopping

Piaget luxury watches and jewelry finds a new home for one of its uncommon boutique stores on Bond Street in London. "Go to luxury shopping streets" around the world are filling up with not just watch stores, but brand boutique watch stores (as opposed to multi-brand stores). Richemont Group, who is the parent company of Piaget, is responsible for the majority of these locations in what can be seen as part of a new marketing and sales strategy. For consumers, it helps showcase the brands as a destination versus just one product out of many in a store.

The Piaget boutique on Bond street for example is able to tell the whole story of the brand's current collection - which ranges from sophisticated to sporty men's pieces, as well as extremely artistic high-end jewelry watches for women. From a distribution perspective, such boutiques serve another potential purpose. As Richemont gears up more brands for online sales, boutique stores double as fulfillment centers for shipping product. This way, Piaget has a local distribution center for online sales made in the UK. This would not be possible or as simple with the traditional model that includes selling product to independent third-party retailers. As far as I know, Piaget is not yet a brand that is available for sale online, but given the direction sister Richemont brands are taking - it could very well be a reality sooner than later.
