Valentine's Day Gifts for Men by David Yurman

Valentine's Day Gifts for Men by David Yurman
Valentine's Day is a romantic occasion for both men and women. So why is it that men have always gotten short-changed when it comes to special gifts, especially jewelry? We think the time has come to honor the men in our lives.

Luxist asked David Yurman, creator of elegant jewelry (and the genius behind the iconic cable bracelet), to suggest a few pieces from his extensive men's collection, all of which would make wonderful gifts on Valentine's Day, in addition to any other special occasion.

"I've always felt that jewelry is one of the most personal and emotional gifts you can give your loved one," says designer David Yurman. "Perhaps one of the first pieces I created was a gift for my then girlfriend, now wife and muse Sybil, over thirty years ago. For this Valentine's Day I have designed a unique assortment for men that embody the spirit of the holiday."

If a bracelet is what you are looking for, Yurman offers a unique sterling silver and 18K yellow gold curb chain, which is part of the Exotic Stone Collection. The bracelet is available in a variety of stones, from black onyx ($1,800) to malachite ($2,100) and lapis ($2,500), which can be seen in the gallery below. The bracelets are 6 1/2" in length. The Rubber Weave Bracelet comes in gray, brown and blue, and retails for $295. From the Naturals Collection, the bracelet has a sterling silver sea urchin-texture clasp on a braided rubber bracelet. The bracelets are 8" in length and 8 mm in width.

Damien Hirst Draws Fire for $50 Million Diamond and Platinum Baby Skull

Art world provocateur Damien Hirst's latest work, an authentic baby's skull covered in platinum and diamonds, is causing controversy in the UK. The sculpture (above), entitled For Heaven's Sake, is a follow-up to the Brit artist's astounding $100 million diamond covered skull which he debuted in 2007. The new work is based on an infant's skull believed to be that of a newborn less than two weeks old from a 19th-century pathology collection that Hirst has acquired, the London Telegraph reports. Cast in platinum and set with more than 8,000 white and pink diamonds by royal jewelers Bentley & Skinner, the skull will be exhibited later this month at the Gagosian Gallery's new space in Hong Kong and will be shown in London later this year.

The gallery has not named a price for the new work but we expect it to fetch at least $50 million if not more. The work has angered parenting groups who claim that it is offensive to those who have suffered the bereavement of a child, the newspaper reports, raising the specter of protests. That of course is only likely to increase its value. "When you look at a skull, you think it represents the end, but when you see the end so beautiful, it gives you hope," Hirst commented regarding his earlier skull work. "Diamonds are about perfection and clarity and wealth and sex and death and immortality. They are a symbol of everything that's eternal, but then they have a dark side as well."

Ring in the New Year with 16 Sparkling Jewels

New Year's Eve is just days away and we are so excited to welcome 2011, even though 2010 felt like a blink in time. We've already featured 12 gorgeous party dresses to get you inspired in your search for the perfect dress for Big Bash 2011 and now it's time to incorporate some sparkling jewels to complement your outfit.

When wearing jewelry, let your outfit talk to you. If it feels off but you can't pinpoint the source, listen to your inner voice because you're probably right. Trying taking off or putting on a piece of jewelry to see how you feel. Take note of whether your outfit is enhanced or drowned out. Remember, there is no need to match your jewelry to your outfit by color or to cover every part of your body with jewelry – having a bare wrist or neckline can speak volumes depending on your outfit.

SoCheec Jewelry to Make Grand Debut in February

SoCheec Jewelry CuffSoCheec Jewelry specializes in big and bold statement pieces as well as fun, trendy designs that incorporate some of the latest nature trends like glimmering spider webs, sparkling snakes, and downright squirmy looking octopuses. They have a little bit of everything but my favorites are the big chunky cuffs, this one done up in pretty textured stingray with a sparkling "hip hop" pattern of diamonds and rubies ($8,338). SoCheec has already been seen on several red carpet celebrities but will make its grand debut in February 2011 during Oscar week at The London Hotel in Los Angeles.

KARA by Kara Ross Hematite Ring

The Hematite Triple Stone Ring ($250) from KARA by Kara Ross beautifully combines simplicity and a sense of uniqueness. With triple hematite stones as the sole focal point, its deep plum almost black hue is striking against a golden tone metal setting.

With such a bold look, I'd suggest giving the Hematite Triple Stone Ring complete center stage. Allow your statement ring to shine brightly without distractions of additional rings or even bracelets. A necklace and/or earrings will do just fine. Wear with a stylish casual outfit or when you're all dolled up for holiday parties for a stunning finish.

Ross' adjustable ring measures at 7/8" L x 2" W.

Scrushy Jewels Raise Nearly $1.5 Million For Defrauded Shareholders

Filed under: Jewelry, Auctions, Crimes and Misdemeanors

scrushy diamondRuth Madoff's diamond ring sold last month for $550,000 and this month it's Leslie Scrushy who has lost her ring. Scrushy is the spouse of former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy, who was found liable in civil court for an accounting fraud and ordered to pay $3.2 billion. Past sales of his cars, yachts and other belongings have raised money to help satisfy that debt. Mrs. Scrushy's jewelry raised nearly $1.5 million at auction on Thursday at Sotheby's with proceeds going to former HealthSouth shareholders.

Levy's Fine Jewelry has been handling the collection and contracted with Sotheby's to auction the nine best pieces including this 20-carat diamond ring valued at up to $700,000 which sold for $752,500. The sale also featured a platinum and diamond bracelet with a total of nearly 49 carats in diamonds valued at $150,000 to $200,000 which sold for $176,500. The sale was held to quiet allegations that Mrs. Scrushy had attempted to hide some of her husband's assets.

Faberge's "Le Carnet de Bal" White Diamond Collection

It's not every day that Fabergé unveils a new high jewelry collection. In fact, following the debut of the "Les Fabuleuses" collection in September 2009, this is only the second such collection which the famed jeweler has debut since 1917.

The "Le Carnet de Bal" white diamond collection recalls the aristocracy of St. Petersberg when noble ladies still used actual dance cards to coordinate their gallant galavanting across the ballroom floor. The collection features items valued as high as $1 million, and features all white diamonds. It was appropriately unveiled at the recent Russia Week in London, where such auction houses as Bonhams, Christies and Sothebys featured century-old Fabergé originals.

Along with the landmark collection, Fabergé also launched its own iPhone application that allows patrons to "try on" Fabergé jewels virtually with the device's built-in camera and call a multi-lingual team of sales advisors at the touch of a button.

Historic Jade Necklace to be sold by Sotheby's

Magnificent and historic imperial jadeite bead neckalce Quing Dynasty
An important and historic Chinese imperial jadeite bead necklace, owned by the family of Oei Tiong Ham family, will be sold by Sotheby's in New York on December 10. Its pre-sale estimate is $1.9 million to $2.2 million, but it is quite possible deep-pocked jade collectors in Asia will drive the hammer price much higher.

The sale of the magnificent neckalce marks the first time in more than 30 years that a jadeite jewel of major historical importance will appear at auction at Sotheby's in New York.

The story of The Oei Tiong Ham Necklace began more than 100 years ago when Oei Tiong Ham, a successful Chinese businessman, is said to have purchased two necklaces composed of beads from an Imperial court necklace from the leading jadeite dealer in Peking, who had reputedly obtained them from the family of Emperor Puyi. After descending through multiple generations of the family, the exceptional necklace is offered by a direct descendant of Oei Tiong Ham.

Samantha House Jewelry Circus Collection

Designer Samantha House was once in the business of choosing jewelry to feature in magazines (she was a Fashion and Beauty Editor of The Improper Bostonian Magazine and has appeared on television as a style expert). She has now journeyed to the other side, creating her own line of simple and striking necklaces, rings and bracelets. Her latest collection is called Circus. The inspiritation was the traveling circus shows of the 1920s and the result is pieces that are a little vintage, a little playful and dramatic whether worn with casual clothes or gussied up for nighttime. House's designs have been sold at Barney's, Henri Bendel, Fred Segal, Intermix and shopbop.com to name a few. She has also designed jewelry for a number of fashion week shows in the tents such as Erin Fetherston, Christian Siriano and Gen Art. The pieces can now be ordered off her own website.

It would be incredibly difficult to go unnoticed when wearing this bold python and gold necklace by KARA by Kara Ross. And why would you want to? This unique necklace is stunningly beautiful and needs to be properly displayed for all to see.

The Square Python Necklace ($345) is made with golden metal chain links with an over-sized earth tone square python pendant. Lalique has reached back into its archives this season to create a blockbuster necklace for the ultimate holiday gift. This incredible piece required more than 700 hours of work and is comprised of 17.90 carats (812 diamonds and emeralds set in white gold). The classics never go out of style but they don't come cheap. This beauty costs $280,000.
