Lalique Diamond and Emerald Serpent Necklace

Lalique has reached back into its archives this season to create a blockbuster necklace for the ultimate holiday gift. The one-of-a-kind serpent necklace, is based on an original René Lalique design dating back to 1898. It's a testament to the enduring power of the serpent in jewelry design. It has been seen since early Roman and Egyptian jewelry and continues to be popular today (Angelina Jolie for example recently designed serpent-themed jewelry). This incredible piece required more than 700 hours of work and is comprised of 17.90 carats (812 diamonds and emeralds set in white gold). The classics never go out of style but they don't come cheap. This beauty costs $280,000.

Byzantia: Jewelry by Stella Flame

Filed under: Jewelry, Luxury Travel & Hotels

While I was checking out Rock Hall, the new Connecticut B&B I told you about last week, I noticed that the proprietress, Stella Flame, had simply gorgeous jewelery: pieces that were big, bold and yet totally tasteful.

I asked her about it, and it turns out that she's a jewelry designer, represented by Sola Showroom in Manhattan. Her inspiration is Istanbul, a city that she loves, and she aims to bring a modern twist to the feel of ancient Mediterranean designs. (This is a common theme with her bed & breakfast, a Mediterranean style estate in the heart of Connecticut.) Stella designs the pieces, which are crafted in Istanbul, using jewels set into a signature combination of oxidized silver and 24 karat gold. On the day of my visit, Stella was just about to fly out to Istanbul to confer with her master jewelers.

These pieces retail in the neigborhood of $1,500 to about $3,000, depending on the stones that are used, contact Sola showroom for prices.

Lux List: Favorite Egg-cellent Items

Designers love eggs. Eggs have beautiful, clean lines and a great shape. The egg shape is perfectly symmetrical when cut vertically, but has a soft slope that draws the eye along its curves when viewed as a whole. Egg shapes can and do appear just about anywhere anwhere, in both small and large sizes. We've noticed this, as egg-shapes have come up repeatedly on Luxist, but we still have our favorites. Let's face it: some egg designs work better than others.  These are some of the good ones:

Vivian Alexander Egg Purses - These novel purses are made out of real Rhea egg shells. They are enameled and decorated to perfection by hand with a variety of precious and semi-precious stones. The interior of the purses are lined with silk and they retail from $1000-7000. The Chanticleer Purse, pictured, costs $2,875.

Earthwise Jewelry

The New York Times pointed out that the negative environmental impact that gold mining can have has prompted jewelry companies to join Leber Jeweler, Inc. in a campaign called "No Dirty Gold," which hopes to push the industry towards responsible mining practices. Leber has a commitment to quality that has lasted over the past 85 years. They sell a line of Earthwise Jewelry that is not only beautiful, but socially conscious. The gold and platinum settings for the jewels are actually made from recycled metals and their gems come from sources that guarantee fair-labor policies. Their 18-carat white gold used in the collection is alloyed with palladium, rather than nickel, to avoid potential allergic reactions in their clientele; they are as conscientious about their customers as the environment. The 18-karat white gold Twisty Sapphire ring, pictured here, is a stunning solitaire that carries a message as well as a sparkle. Price $800.
