Ralph Lauren Limited Edition Platinum Stirrup Watch

Ralph Lauren is offering a new limited edition version of its Stirrup chronograph watch in platinum for the holidays. Limited to 67 pieces worldwide to commemorate 1967, the year the Polo Ralph Lauren brand was born, the watch is priced at $68,500 and comes on a black alligator strap.

As my colleague Ariel Adams reported, the famed designer launched his new line of timepieces earlier this year, consisting of three separate collections, in a joint venture with Richemont.

The Stirrup Collection was inspired by heritage equestrian style and the celebrated history of Ralph Lauren. The self-winding watch will be available at select Polo Ralph Lauren boutiques worldwide and via www.ralphlauren.com.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos Birthday Clock

jaeger-lecoultre atmos
In an odd twist of luxury snobbery goes silly, Jaeger-LeCoultre actually named this clock the Atmos Birthday - to celebrate the 80th birthday of the (almost) perpetual, atmospheric movement of the Atmos clock line. The simple design and background spells out a series of "Atmos Birthday" words. Looking at the clock head-on you see the dial in mostly rhodium plated steel with parts of the back in mother-of-pearl (in blue or pink). The movement is hidden in the back. In addition to the time, the Atmos Birthday has a month and moon phase indicator. The large balance wheel sits below as the entire complex contraption sits in a pedestal with a plate for custom engraving, inside of a crystal class case.

Although the Atmos movement is now over 80 years old (introduced in 1928), the movement still feels as modern as ever with its almost impossible petite power consumption, feeding off of slight changes in a rooms temperature. All hand made, and limited to just 8 pieces.

Style of the watch is sporty and functional with a busy dial that is still legible enough. Look for the Master Compressor Extreme W-Alarm watch at select Tourneau watch stores soon.

Up Close with Jaeger-LeCoultre's AMVOX2 Chronograph Racing

jaeger le-coultre amvox2 chronograph

Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin have been together for more than fifty years, ever since Aston won its first Le Mans in 1959 with a DBR1 sporting a Jaeger clock. The two companies began to make the most of that partnership only a few years ago, when Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the AMVOX1.

The second generation timepieces -- easily remembered as AMVOX2 -- begin with this, the AMVOX2 Chronograph. The vertical-trigger chronograph is the first of its kind to dispense with push-buttons: the timing mechanism can be stopped, started, and reset by pressing on the upper and lower edges of the sapphire crystal face. The chronograph functions can also be locked in position with the 3-position slider on the right.

Other details surrounding Jaeger-LeCoultre's Chronograph Caliber 751B include the red lever mechanism between 4 and 8'o'clock, and black applique numbers on a satin-finish dial that mask the white discs of the chronograph. You can peruse the details of Jaeger's AMVOX2 and survey the five years of timepieces the partnership has produced below.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 Smallest Mechanical Watch Movement In The World Turns 80

I was a bit surprised to learn that the smallest mechanical watch movement in the world wasn't something new. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 mechanical watch movement watch originally designed and put into watches in 1929. It's purpose was to be a technical achievement as well as a movement small enough to be placed in the fashionably tiny women's jewelry watches of the time. Years later the Calibre 101 movement is still around only having undergone minor changes over the past 80 years. The movement now contains more parts in the same small area - 98 to be exactly, and has more typically been fitted with gray gold bridges and decorated surfaces.

The movement is quite little. 14mm long by 4.8mm wide, and only 3.4mm thick. Of course the movement is manually wound. The Calibre 101 movement is very rare. Only about two dozen of the movements are made by Jaeger-LeCoultre each year. Not just anyone can put the tiny miracles together as it requires extreme care and skill. When I first learned about the movement I wondered by no one has made a smaller movement since? Surely it is something we can do even if it is not practical. Well, that is the point I think. Making a mechanical movement smaller than the Calibre 101 makes no practical sense - all. If you need to go smaller just go with quartz. No one is even going to wear a watch so smaller it requires it. I have been watch faces on rings, and they obviously use a quartz movement as it is so much more practical. Imagine winding a ring watch. Thus, unless some enterprising watch maker feels it is their life mission to innovate into the unwise, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 is going to be the smallest mechanical watch movement around for perhaps another 80 years.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso 986 Duodate Limited Edition Watch

jaeger-lecoultre grand reverso 986
Jaeger-LeCoultre is presenting this Grande Reverso Duodate as a classic use of the Reverso case. On one side of the JLC 986 is guilloche engraved silvered dial with the time, subsidiary seconds dial, and a large "open" date display (not a fan of these panoramic open date windows, and look forward to this trend ending soon). Overall, this side of the watch is attractive but nothing special. Reverse the case with a flip as is iconic of this line and you get another watch face in black with a synchronized 24 hour hand that serves as a day/night indicator. Frankly the design is in fact classic Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, but isn't very exciting other than that. The watch is called "Duodate," but of course only has one date. Who is naming these watches?

The 986 Duodate will be available in two limited edition models. First is a 52mm x 31.3mm wide steel case version in 1500 pieces, and another 19k pink gold version in 500 pieces. Inside the watches is a manually-wound Jaeger-LeCoultre 986 mechanical movement. Despite having just one crown for setting the two times, Jaeger-LeCoultre assures that the process is simple and setting one time should not disturb the setting of the other time. For the traveler who likes the Reverso case types and wants two time zones in a classic package, this is a fine watch. Plus it has the benefit of being a limited edition and attractive. Otherwise it falls a bit short of feeling special or unique amongst other, potentially more interesting watches in this lineup.

Jaeger LeCoultre Grand Master Tourbillon Continents Watches

jaeger lecoultre grand master tourbillion
This interesting timepiece will arrive in three varieties showing different parts of the world. There is the pictured model showing Asia and the nearby areas, another version focusing on Europe and Africa, and a third version focusing on the Americas. This is another "we can do it" watch by Jaeger-LeCoultre who just recently announced the Hybris Mechanica Grande Sonnerie, which is the most complex watch in the world. While the Tourbillon complication is complex in this Grand Master Tourbillon Continents watch line, the focus is on the artistry on the dial.

The dial starts with a machine engraved plate where the continents are outlined, and the vertical texturing is applied within the body of the land masses. The plate is then hand painted with enamel in a champleve technique to apply the various colors in the most delicate of manners. I am almost oversimplifying the process, but you get the idea. The bodies of water are done with a raised wave-like texture that is likely extremely tough to do. Compass symbols line the bezel and double as hour indicators for the hands of the watch. You can see the tourbillon (also the subsidiary seconds dial) through the window at 6 o'clock as part of the Jaeger LeCoultre Calibre 978 manually wound movement. Sapphire crystals cover the top and back of the watch. The Grand Master Tourbillon Continents watch really succeeds in creating a visually stunning map in a technique that few companies can be said to have mastered. Each of the three versions will be limited to 20 pieces in three materials that include 18k white, yellow,or rose gold. Not sure about price but more than likely over $100,000.

$37,000 Watch Unlocks Your Aston Martin

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Luxury Cars & Autos

Aston Martin and Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre have teamed up on a new timepiece that doubles as a key to the $260,000 DBS - James Bond's car of choice. The AMVOX2 DBS Transponder, as it's called, locks and unlocks the car much the same way as a remote key fob, though far more stylishly (you'll still need a key to actually drive away). Available as an add-on only for DBS owners, the chronograph costs $37,900 and can be ordered now for October delivery. The AMVOX2 DBS Transponder will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show on Oct. 4. The watch features "a suspended metallic grey DBS symbol, a discrete Aston Martin emblem on the movement operating indicator and ruthenium grey bridges, satin finish and a black dial that all evoke the DBS's instrument panel," the company notes.

Luxspotting: Leonardo's Wrist Candy

I already covered the jewelry worn by some of Hollywood's best at the Academy Awards but what about the watches. No diamonds for Leonardo DiCaprio but National Jeweler reports that Leo was wearing the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Minute Repeater for the big night. The round watch is done in platinum and has a 15-day power reserve movement that chimes the hours, quarter hours and minutes. The watch is valued at $175,000 and is a limited edition of 200 pieces. He wore the same watch to the Blood Diamond premiere in Los Angeles but he also owns a Master Compressor Geographic and the Reverso Septantieme both from Jaeger-LeCoultre. I wonder if Leo has his eye on a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Triptyque.

The watch costs around $375,000 and has a tourbillon on its front face and a zodiacal calendar with an astronomical chart, an equation of time and sunrise and sunset times on the back face. The third face has a perpetual calendar in the Reverso carriage. Overall the watch has 18 complications, and has six patents pending. You can read in great detail about the watch at The Watch Quote.
