Gold Vermeil Bug on a Cuff

Sometimes I write about things because I love them, and sometimes because I hate them but they're just too crazy to pass up. This Shagreen Cuff with Gold Vermeil Bug falls somewhere in the middle. I love cuff bracelets, and usually I go for unusual pieces but this large insect is just a little too creepy -- look at the size of the fangs! Maybe it would work with a goth ensemble?

The cuff, however, is a beautifully textured gray shagreen, and the insect is 14k gold and decorated with rubies, sapphires, green agates, and crystals. $1,450

Insect Frames

Framed butterflies aren't usually part of a modern home but Insect Frames sells a wide variety of insect specimens simply mounted in streamlined frames. Most of the framed butterflies used were raised on insect farms or aviaries around the world. Insect Frames says that many governments in developing countries are encouraging their people to raise insects for economic advancement. The farming is self-sustainable and the insects live on an average of only 20 - 60 days. When the insects have died naturally, they are carefully gathered and exported around the world. They only use insects that are legally imported into the country as regulated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department. The moth shown here is the Atlas moth, the largest moth in the world. It sells for $56.

Bugs that Won't Bite: Handcarved Bamboo Insects

I'm not a bug enthusiast by any means, but there's something appealing about these bamboo insects. Maybe it's because they bring back memories from childhood (some good, some bad!), or it could just be that bugs are so inherently "creepy" and it's a rare occasion to get so close to one and see this kind of detail. Individually hand carved from "tiger print" bamboo they're each amazingly lifelike and detailed, and there's even a bamboo cage available if you're worried they might spark to life and fly away. Ranging in size from 2" (the cricket) to 7" (the praying mantis), there are 5 different designs available and prices range from $55-$65 each.

J. Herwitt's Insect Jewelry

I came across the unique jewelry designs of Jennifer Herwitt in May's Vogue. I am always a sucker for a designer who turns the unusual into something beautiful and her J. Herwitt designs turn bugs the creepy crawly into diamond-studded beauties. Herwitt, who is also a set decorator and an interior designer, is inspired by the insect world and while she creates adorable diamond and gold pieces shaped like butterflies and dragonflies, she also gives scorpions, ants and spiders the same treatment. This large spider necklace which is 14K white gold set with13 brilliant cut diamonds sells for $5,660 and is a favorite of the singer Pink.
