Today's Chicago home combines the best of the city that was with the city that is. The six-bedroom home in the Gold Coast area was built in 1877. The home's exterior has been substantially re-built including a new facade, front steps and 2-car garage. The interior has been meticulously renovated including kitchens, baths, windows and mechanical system. The design makes the most of natural light and modern decor but keeps charming older details such as a handsome mahogany-paneled living room, plaster moldings and an original staircase. The eat-in kitchen has a butler's pantry and the luxurious master suite has a marble bath. There are three or four additional upstairs bedrooms with newer baths, and a bright lower level with a family room with built-ins and another bedroom and bath. This home is listed at $4.95 million.

Last month we learned that Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ted Lilly was putting his Chicago home up for market. Now, Housing Watch led us to the listing. Lilly, who used to play for the Cubs is yet another sports star who may end up losing money on a home he bought in a town he no longer plays for; Housing Watch reports that Lilly bought the home in 2006 for $2.15 million bit it is listed for $2.1 million with Mike Lavorato of d'Aprile Realty.

Florsheim Mansion, Estate of the Day

Today's home is a rather unique offering, an 11-room mansion on Chicago's Gold Coast. The Chicago Tribune reported that the mansion was designed by architect Andrew Rebori and later modified by architect Bertrand Goldberg. It was built in 1938 and known as the Florsheim mansion. The five bedroom home and separate guest house were linked in the 1950s by a long galley-style kitchen. The current owner paid $2.23 million to purchase the mansion in 2006 from then-Museum of Contemporary Art director Robert Fitzpatrick.

The home is broken into a number of innovative spaces. After you come in through the outer archway you enter into the office adjoined by the reception room featuring the signature Rebori glass block wash room and overlooking a garden and patio. The second level has an east-facing living room with fireplace and window overlooking State Street and Lake Michigan. The media room is adjoined with the two story family room. On the third floor there are three bedrooms with adjoining Ribori-style bathrooms. This property is listed at $2.5 million.

Jamie Dimon's Slow Seller, Estate of the Day

How does JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon live? Quite well, thank you very much. We first checked out his home on Chicago's Gold Coast last year but a new listing offers a deeper look at Dimon's well-decorated environs. His eight-bedroom home was built in 1870 but has been lavishly adapted for the modern executive. The home is spread out over four stories and includes a 900-square-foot rooftop terrace outfitted with ample seating in both sun and shade. There is a second floor master suite, wine vault, an elegant gold and eggplant media room and gym decorated with sports memorabilia and crowned with a starry dome.

Dimon has been the CEO and president of JP Morgan since 2005 and has been an integral part of overseeing the $25 billion in TARP funds that JPMorgan Chase received. He hasn't lived in the Gold Coast home since 2004. He bought the home in 2000 for $4.68 million and originally put it on the market several years ago for $13.5 million. It was at $10.5 million when we checked it out last year but had a price cut earlier this year to $9.5 million. The only property listed for more in the area is Bill Wrigley Jr.'s raw penthouse space.

An Emmy award winning soap opera writer is auctioning off her Chicago condo. Last month Kay Alden picked up her fifth daytime Emmy award this time as co-head of the writing team on The Bold and The Beautiful, and now, as Chicago Magazine reports, she's selling her 25th floor home at auction on July 27. The 4,700-square-foot home is an assemblage four smaller condos bought over the course of 20 years. The full-floor condo has panoramic views. The condo had been listed at $1.95 million for about a year. The auction through Fine & Company has a suggested opening bid is $600,000. Chicago Magazine reports that some of the finishes in the unit are dated (check out their photo gallery for a look). Still, it's a tempting amount of space with some truly stellar views.

Highland Park Architectural, Estate of the Day

I'm always a little skeptical when a listing invokes the name of Frank Lloyd Wright to describe a home but I can see it a little in this one if only for the fact that it is all on one story. The rambling ranch is on the lake in Highland Park, Illinois. The home is on two acres and has over 180 feet of lake frontage. The property is two lots that have plenty of woods and beach access. The three-bedroom home has approximately 3,000 square feet of space. The low slung home has walnut parquet floors, tiled kitchen, and hallway walls in travertine stone. The best feature is the use of large windows showcasing the views. This home is listed at $5,499,990.

Winnetka Lakefront, Estate of the Day

Today's home sits on Lake Michigan in the posh Chicago suburb of Winnetka. What most endears this house to me is the fact that it truly seems designed for four-season living. The six-bedroom home is just steps to the beach and also has a large terrace for catching the summer sun. There is also an indoor pool for winter that has a fireplace in the same room. The home has large windows that face the lake and a modern style that looks fresh and not chilly. There are seven fireplaces, a wine cellar, media room and a master bedroom with a sitting room. It is listed at $7.85 million.
