If you order Hyatt's house wine brand, Canvas, starting next month, you'll get a lovely surprise, the beautiful labels shown above. Hyatt Hotels & Resorts and Folio Fine Wine Partners announced the winners of the 2010 Canvas Artist Series Contest, which gave accredited art students the chance to create a signature wine label for Canvas, a wine brand created by Folio Fine Wine Partners exclusively for Hyatt. The limited edition Canvas wine bottles will be available at all participating Hyatt properties throughout the U.S. starting in February 2011 and feature striking artworks chosen from a wide field of entries. The Cabernet Sauvignon label was created by Jesse Couturier-Herndon of Armstrong Atlantic State University; the Merlot was designed by Anna Membrino of Southern Methodist University and the Chardonnay was done by Claire Ramirez of Trinity University. Each student also received a $5,000 scholarship from Hyatt.

Grissini Restaurant Unveils 600 gram White Truffle

White Truffle at Grissini RestaurantWhite truffles are among the most elusive and expensive of the all the truffle varieties and as this year's white truffle season begins (it runs October to December) the Grissini Restaurant at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is sitting pretty. This past Friday they unveiled a much larger than average 600 gram specimen.

About as big as two baseballs, the beige beauty might not be a record-setter but it is many times larger than the 20 - 30g truffles the restaurant usually gets. Grissoni isn't disclosing how much it paid for the truffle but it will say it plans to charge customers just over $19 a gram for the delicacy, or about $11,600 total.

Bigger isn't better in terms of taste but larger truffles do have a longer shelf life and, because they're so rare, are always good for garnering a little extra publicity.

Andaz 5th Avenue Opens July 5

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Back in January we wrote about the soft opening for the Andaz Wall Street. Its sister property, the Andaz 5th Avenue, the second Andaz property in New York and the fifth in the collection, plans to open its doors on July 5, 2010.

The Andaz 5th Avenue takes its design cues from the midtown Manhattan neighborhood. The interiors designed by Tony Chi are meant to be loft-like and reflect the city's century-old apartment residences. The hotel's 485 Fifth Avenue location was once the largest and last of the Rogers, Peet & Co. department stores, later becoming the Tommy Hilfiger global headquarters before its transformation into Andaz 5th Avenue.

Grand Hyatt New York Reinvents Room Service

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Grand Hyatt New York's Market
Ever wish the luxury of chowing down in your hotel room didn't involve dialing room service, waiting an hour, paying 50 percent more than the food's worth plus tip and sometimes a room service fee? Well, the Grand Hyatt New York has a new concept that might pique your interest: their very own Market, which just opened on April 5.

Not just an average grocery store aisle; Market features locally sourced foods and brands from the Grand Central neighborhood like Roasting Plant, Tisserie, Chickalicious and Macaron Café NYC. It's located right in the lobby and you can conveniently charge your items to your room, sans waiting or fee.

"Market is truly changing the concept of hotel room service. It was conceived for our busy guests and travelers looking for quick, high-quality food with a sense of New York style and an eye toward healthy living," said Matthew Adams, Vice President / Managing Director. "With competitive pricing based on local markets rather than room service, Market will not only be accessible, but affordable."

Traditional room service for the purists among you will still be available, but for instant gratification, this idea, which we've only seen before in extensive resorts, seems long overdue. Well done, Grand Hyatt New York.

Aviara Resort Switches From Four Seasons To Hyatt

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Spas

Last year we wrote about the troubles facing the Four Seasons Aviara. The luxury resort north of San Diego has finally left the Four Seasons fold. Hyatt has announced that Broadreach Capital Partners and Maritz, Wolff & Co. have selected Hyatt to brand and manage Aviara Resort as part of its luxury Park Hyatt portfolio.

The resort and spa has a great setting with ocean views but this idyllic retreat has been filled with controversy. Since last year the owners said that the Four Seasons financially mismanaged the Aviara and they struggled to replace it with a new operator. The LA Times reports that an arbitration panel found that Four Seasons did not violate the management agreement but found that both parties had a share in the disintegration of good relations and that it was best that the arrangement be terminated.

Hyatt will assume management of the hotel on June 21, 2010, when Park Hyatt Aviara Resort will become the 25th property operating under the Park Hyatt brand.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Room Renovation Beginning

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

The Grand Hyatt Kauai is one of my favorite places to hang out on the island -- a perfect afternoon would begin with a Lomi Lomi massage at the hotel's Anara Spa, followed by an outdoor shower. Then a stroll along the resort's pretty stretch of beach at sunset, and then cocktails in the wood-paneled Stevenson's Library lounge that's like a good ol' boy's club, but not in an obnoxious sexist way.

So I was pleased to learn that all the guest rooms are getting a face lift, starting in April 2010-- from the renderings I've seen, the rooms look to be getting a sleek and simple décor, with local touches, including plantation-style wood shutters and hand carved headboards of sapele wood (similar to mahogeny), imprinted with the native hapu'u fern. The renovation will be done wing-by-wing, so you shouldn't be next door to drilling and hammering if you visit over the next few months. All the guest rooms are expected to be renovated by 2011.

The Hip New Andaz West Hollywood

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Hyatt Hotels & Resorts just opened its second property under its hip new Andaz brand, located on Los Angeles' legendary Sunset Strip, the Andaz West Hollywood. The first Andaz opened in 2007 in London. Eschewing the usual check in process, Andaz guests are received in the Andaz Lounge, a "non-traditional multi-use social space" where they're greeted by an Andaz Host who serves the functions of the front office agent, concierge and bell attendant as well as providing insight into the neighborhood. At the 14-story Andaz West Hollywood, New York-based architecture and interior design firm Janson Goldstein LLP developed a "series of engaging spaces featuring design sensibilities tied to the locale."

Beginning with a dramatic glass garden pavilion set off the main entrance, the hotel showcases a commissioned cascading hand-painted metal disk 11-foot sculpture by renowned New York-based artist Jacob Hashimoto. Throughout the hotel, there are installations from Los Angeles artists and impromptu music performances from some of the city's up-and-coming musicians. The public spaces , from the dramatic rooftop terrace (above) with heated pool and daybed seating to the vibrant restaurant and bar are the focus at Andaz. The hotel boasts spectacular panoramic views of the Hollywood Hills on one side and the Sunset Strip and downtown Los Angeles on the other.

In addition to the magnificent views, the Andaz's 257 rooms, including 20 expansive suites, include sitting areas and many also features a glass-enclosed sunroom overlooking Sunset Boulevard. The design incorporates eco-conscious elements, with features such as special coating on the sunroom windows to reduce solar heat gain and bring in more natural light, as well as wood flooring that has been harvested under regional environmental guidelines using sustainable forestry practices. The Andaz is the site of the former Hyatt West Hollywood, known until 1997 as the Continental Hyatt House, a favorite of traveling rock bands.

First Andaz Hotel Debuts in London

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

The first hotel in Hyatt's new Andaz chain is open for business. Andaz Liverpool Street, London is the beginning of a brand that is meant to be eco-conscious, reflective of local culture, personal, and of course, luxurious. The hotel has no front desks at check in, no separate concierge desk or receptionist. Instead one contact, the "Andaz Team Member" responds to guests' personal tastes, requests and preferences. Guests are checked in via Tablet PC`s, either en route to the guest room, or upon arrival. The room rate is inclusive of breakfast, internet access, healthy mini bar items, laundry and a selection of DVDs. The hotel has five restaurants that specialize in sushi, pub food, fine dining, seafood and bistro fare. The hotel also has a new art collection in the guest corridors and East End Contemporary Art Tours are launched from the hotel. Also local chracters have created iPod play lists that appear on loan iPods in the Andaz living room which replaces the lobby area. The eco-conscious angles in the London hotel are that the toilets use 80% less water, a computer-controlled boiler reduces fuel use, intelligent lighting, locally-sourced food and the use of fair-trade purchasing. Rates begin at $810 for single occupancy and $850 for double occupancy.

As part of the rollout, Hyatt sommelier Andrea Robinson Immer will provide training for hotel staff and host wine tasting events at properties across the Unites States.

The Lavish Plans For 75 Wall Street

The former downtown headquarters of JP Morgan Chase, 75 Wall Street, a rose-colored brick tower, is making the switch from office building to luxury condos and a hotel. The building will be home to an Andaz hotel, the recently announced new luxury lifestyle arm of Hyatt. The 250-suite hotel will take up the lower part of the building while the upper 24 floors will be home to 350 condominiums. The residences will have loft-like layouts from studios to three bedrooms. There will also be duplex penthouses with custom library walls, fireplaces and terrace with wet bars. Other details include large picture windows, 10-foot ceilings, white marble baths, cerused oak flooring and an overhead storage system to maximize space. On the 42nd floor rooftop there will be a solarium, lounge, sandy beach, hot tub, hammocks, grills and a lounging area with a fireplace and a kitchen. Completion is set for 2008.

The Barai

One of the ways that Hyatt is keeping up with the boutique hotels is to create little oases inside their larger hotels. The Barai is a new spa concept that is part of the Hyatt Regency Hua Hin in Thailand. The spa offers just eight residential spa suites and 18 private treatment suites. The bottom floor residential suites have plunge pools while the upper suites have balconies with view of the Gulf of Thailand. The spa offers yoga, meditation and a variety of treatments and will open in March.
