Riverside's Mission Inn Lights Up Christmas Season in Los Angeles

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Events

New Yorkers may mark the start of the holiday season with the lighting of the tree at Rockefeller Center and Washingtonians may feel the same about the lighting of the White House Christmas tree. But in greater Los Angeles, holiday cheer-seekers head east -- to the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in Riverside.

Inn owner Duane Roberts illuminates his landmark hotel with more than 3.5 million lights and stages a free Festival of Lights show, replete with an elaborately decorated Christmas tree, Dickens carolers, horse-drawn carriages and more than 400 animated characters dressed in 17th Century costumes. There's even free hot cocoa, eggnog and holiday sweets. (No, there's no snow, but truth is most of us moved here because we weren't that attached to it in the first place.)

HSN 2010 Designer Ornament Collection

To celebrate the holidays, HSN, has rounded up some of the celebrities and designers in their stable to create the heART HSN 2010 Designer Ornament Collection. As part of the company's overall "HSN Cares" philanthropic campaign, the heART collection is available exclusively on HSN and hsn.com featuring ornaments designed by more than 70 HSN partners. The profits (no less than 30 percent of the purchase price of each ornament) will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. St. Jude is the first and only pediatric cancer center to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute and works on finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

The collection features ornaments designed by Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwen Stefani, Mary J. Blige, Sean Combs, Tori Spelling, Molly Sims, Martha Stewart, Susan Lucci, Jonathan Adler, Nate Berkus, Padma Lakshmi and many others. The collection ranges in price from $19.90 to $49.90, with the exception of the ornament by fashion designer Naeem Khan. That ornament, shown at right, is covered in brilliant, hand-cut Swarovski crystals and sells for $299.

Chocolate Toy Box

The problem with a gingerbread house is that gingerbread is not always a fan favorite. Chocolate on the other hand, is always a crowd pleaser. This chocolate toy shop is completely edible including the snow-covered roof and candy decorations. The confection sells for $74.95.

Chandler 4 Corners Holiday Pillows

Chandler 4 Corners has perhaps the cutest collection of holiday-themed pillows I have seen. Their 18" pillows of hooked New Zealand wool feature jolly Santas, a variety of dogs in Santa hats, snowmen and idyllic winter scenes. Each pillow has a zippered velveteen back and a poly-fill insert and they sell for $79 each.

Luxist Holiday Guide: Amazing Menorahs

We've already covered Christmas ornaments so now let's take a look at some intriguing ways to celebrate Chanukah. More and more designers are incorporating unique elements into their designs allowing you to go traditional, contemporary or just plain cutesy.

What: Menorahmorph in Lime
Why: Hot designer Karim Rashid brings his love of the blob to the menorah. It was created in honor of the centennial of the Jewish museum and also comes in pink or blue with matching candles.
How Much: It sells for $50

Anthropologie Seaside Ornaments

Anthropologie, the clothing store which creates a uniquely antique-meets-vintage-funky vibe in their locations, has a line of holiday ornaments in the same vein. The line ranges from cutesy felt ornaments in animal shapes to elegant blown glass balls and my favorite, their seaside line, a series of ocean designs including mermaids with velvet tails and glass sea creatures and jeweled fish. Prices range from around $8 to $28.

Jay Strongwater Flower Menorah

Few people do decoration like Jay Strongwater. The designer is famous for his use of Swarovski crystals and ornate flower motifs. He brings all that to bear in his elaborate menorah. The menorah holds to the classic shape but is decorated with curving vines and magnolia buds. It holds nine candles and sells for $1200.
