Hockey Star Sean Avery Curates Special Sales for Gilt MAN

Filed under: Apparel, Celebrity Shopping, Sports, Men's Style, Luxury Shopping

New York Rangers hockey star Sean Avery (above left) is one of the rare professional athletes with a real sense of style. His passion for fashion even led him to intern at Vogue while selflessly dating several leggy models.

Now the spiffy sportsman is curating a series of three weekly sales (March 11, 18 and 25) for Gilt MAN, online luxury retailer Gilt Groupe's men's site dedicated to matters sartorial, including a must-read daily guide to men's style.

Avery combed the impressive Gilt MAN inventory with the site's editorial director Tyler Thoreson (above right) to make his sartorial selections. Each "Avery's Rules" sale focuses on a different phase of the life of a style-conscious professional. The first, "At Work," featured A. Testoni shoes, crisp, fitted shirts and razor-sharp suits by Raf Simons, Martin Greenfield, and Calvin Klein Collection.

Taking his style advice may not necessarily get you an NHL contract and a supermodel girlfriend, but it certainly won't hurt your chances.

Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks Get Their Rings

A new hockey season is beginning and last season's Stanley Cup champs, the Chicago Blackhawks recently received their rings. The team hadn't won Lord Stanley's cup since 1961 and they celebrated in style with 14K white gold rings laden with 404 stones, a total of approximately eight carats of diamonds and other gemstones worth around $30,000. The front of the ring features the Blackhawks Indian head logo atop the Stanley Cup and bordered by the words "Stanley Cup Champions" on the face. Each ring is personalized with a team member's name and number. One side has baguette-cut rubies and pear-shaped emeralds set in the shape of the Hawks' crossed tomahawks and the other shows a diamond-studded Stanley Cup and the 2010 season's motto: One Goal along with the championship years: 2010, 1961, 1938 and 1934. The rings were created by Jostens and the inside of each player's ring has the NHL logo and the names of the four teams the Hawks dispatched in the playoffs along with the series scores.

The Puck Daddy blog shows a few other rings form the past few years as well as the far more modest 1961 rings.

Hockey Jersey Auction Could Set A Record

One of Canada's prized pieces of sports memorabilia could sell for over $340,000 Canadian today through Classic Auctions. Bidders have just a few more hours to bid on the jersey worn by Paul Henderson when he scored what is referred to as "the goal"-- Team Canada's deciding goal of the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union. The Toronto Star reports that the well-worn white and red No. 19 shirt received a bid of $309,224 from The Jim Pattison Group, a B.C.-based company who would take the sports artifact on a Canada-wide tour before donating it to the sports hall of fame in Calgary. Other Canadian brands including Molson and Canadian Tire tendered bids earlier in the auction. The current owner plans to doate some of the proceeds to charity. The hockey jersey has set a record for the highest price ever to be paid for a hockey item via auction beating out a Bobby Orr rookie jersey that sold for $191,200. It is believed that some Wayne Gretzky have sold privately for for around $250,000. For his part Henderson has said he'd like to see this one go to Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.

UPDATE: The Toronto Sun reports that the shirt went for a total of $1,275,707 including auction fees to Mitchell Goldhar, owner of real estate development company SmartCentres.

Beverly Hills Cigar Club to Hockey Haters: Light(en) Up!

Much ado has been made of the cigars ignited by the Canadian Women's Hockey Team in celebration of the gold medal they had earned. Of course, they are not the first to light cigars following a victory, and despite much of the criticism being levied these days, they are unlikely to be the last. Vin Lee, CEO of the Beverly Hills Cigar Club, wants the team to know that they have his support.

In addition to decrying the International Olympic Committee's suggestion that an investigation may be necessary, he said in a statement:

Every other sport – from the Stanley Cup, the World Cup of Soccer, NASCAR to the Super Bowl -- supports celebrating victories with a bottle of champagne and a great cigar," points out Lee. "The moment is emotional; in the case of the Olympics, it often is the reward of years of hard work and sacrifice. The Canadian Women's Hockey Team should not be chastised for wanting to mark their victory on the ice. They are national heroes.

It would be nice for the IOC to lighten up on this issue ... having already missed the opportunity to light up in support of the Canadian women's team.

And, congratulations on a victory that was certainly earned!

Former NHL Hockey Players Invest In Whistler Spa

A former NHL hockey player is one of the investors behind a luxurious new spa. Vincent Damphousse is a part of the $8.5-million Scandinave Spa Whistler, opens this month just in time to ramp up for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Vancouver Sun reports that Damphousse owns a 25-per-cent stake in Quebec-based spa developer Gestion Riviere du Diable Inc. (GRD), which has spas in Montreal, Mont Tremblant, Quebec and a franchise spa in Blue Mountain, Ontario. Another player, former defenseman Eric Desjardins owns five per cent of the company.

The project has six separate buildings with green roofs and offers a spa experience that starts with a steam bath or sauna before a quick cool off in Nordic waterfalls or a cold bath or shower, a process that is repeated several times. The baths experience costs $55 and there are also packages that include massage.

Damphousse has been involved with GRD since 1999, when he was still actively playing. He was later the National Hockey League Players Association's director of business relations and is on the boards of four different companies.

Tom Preissing In Manhattan Beach, Estate of the Day

Filed under: Estates, Celebrity Shopping, Sports

Sometimes I wonder if a business card for Manhattan Beach real estate agent Ed Kaminzky comes with every professional sports star's welcome to Los Angeles package because so Los Angeles sports celebrities end up in Manhattan Beach townhomes. Of course once they leave the team there is some selling to do. And so Los Angeles Kings defenseman Tom Preissing has put his four-bedroom townhouse on the market after being assigned to the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League. The home has an enviable spot just a few blocks from the water and boasts some lovely ocean views. The Spanish style home doesn't have much going on in the way of decor but it is a blank slate for any future owners. As the listing puts it, the home is good as new. It has a reverse floorplan to maximize the views and access to the large deck. The main floor master suite has a private deck. There is a two-car garage plus a guest/beach car parking space. This home is listed at $2.15 million.

I decided to take this opportunity to see the trio of sports stars I covered that were selling in Manhattan Beach last fall. Baseball pitcher Derek Lowe has dropped the price on his home which we covered last September. It was then listed at $5.7 million and is now at $4.599 million. A bit of an ouch considering that Lowe bought for $5 million in 2006. Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez has kept his four-bedroom home at the same price of $3.999 million. He bought in 2003 for $1.575 million. Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jason Kendall took his $$7.3 million home off the market but doesn't appear to have sold it.

Two Billionaires Plan NHL Purchases

nhl billionaireTen of the NHL teams are said to be losing money but a couple of billionaires may be in a buying mood.

Alexander Medvedev, the Russian billionaire and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Russian energy company Gazprom, shown in the top right, may become the first Russian billionaire with an NHL franchise. Medvedev is already the owner of Russia's Continental Hockey League and has said that he has narrowed his decision to just three possible teams. Medvedev likely wouldn't be welcomed into the NHL with open arms considering that several NHL players ending up playing for the Russian league. There isn't currently a player transfer agreement between the two leagues. Medvedev is set to meet with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly later this week at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Medvedev is hoping to develop European hockey and is meeting with Swedish teams. The Russian league did have some difficulties with teams paying player salaries in the first season but Medvedev says he will crack down on any teams with debts.

One team that Medvedev can't have is the Phoenix Coyotes. The co-CEO of Research in Motion, Jim Balsillie has been trying to buy a hockey team for several years including trying to buy both the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Nashville Predators. Now the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes may be his for the taking. Reports say he has made a $212.5 million offer for the Coyotes and will move the team to Southern Ontario.

Dallas Billionaire's Jet Does Double Duty

Dallas billionaire and sports team owner, Tom Hicks is able to do something a lot of other billionaire sports owners are not, he gets double duty from his new Boeing 757. Not only is his hockey team, the Dallas Stars using the plane but his baseball team, the Texas Rangers, will use the same plane once their season comes around. The plane probably won't be too much help for his other sports ownerships, Mesquite Championship Rodeo and 50 percent of the English football (soccer) team Liverpool FC.
