Python Ruffle Hobo, Handbag of the Day

A girl can't have enough hobo bags, if you ask me, since they're so comfy and useful and can make such a fashion statement even in the winter months when you're not all that dressed up. This Python Ruffle Hobo by Uzca takes the standard brown leather hobo and gives it a subtle but solid upgrade in femininity with a series of over-sized leather ruffles, which manage to bring the whole thing up a notch while maintaining the traditional hobo bag's versatility and comfort. $2,250

Michael Kors Skorpios Hobo, Handbag of the Day

Michael Kors Skorpios HoboThe Michael Kors Skorpios Hobo is a classy Resort season hobo which practically emanates wealth and exclusivity.

To begin with, the bag is white, which instantly establishes that either the wearer doesn't ever get near anything dirty or that if they did, they could afford to throw it away and get a new one.

This hobo is the size of a big tote, at 16 1/2"W x 14"H x 5"D, and the slouchy shape can be expanded by undoing the goldtone clips at the sides. The soft leather face of the bag is trimmed with brown snakeskin-embossed leather, and the handle is brown braided leather with nautical-style clips -- very cruise ship.

The Michael Kors Skorpios Hobo is available for pre-order in limited quantities from Nordstrom for $1,095.00.

Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Slouchy Hobo, Handbag of the Day

Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Slouchy HoboThe Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Slouchy Hobo is a perfect bag to follow this season's texture trend. This roomy hobo may look like it's covered in metallic chains, but it's actually chain-woven black metallic leather. How hot is that?

This metallic "Stephanie" number also comes in Silver and Gold, but we like the black -- a perfect, demure complement for all the 20s-style gear you'll be wearing around the holidays. The bright silver hardware is attractive and interesting, and the bag is lined in durable beige canvas. The texture makes this bag transition easily from day to night, even at 13"H x 17 1/2"W x 5"D.

The Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Slouchy Hobo is available from Neiman Marcus for $875.00.

Bally Slouchy Leather Hobo Handbag, Handbag of the Day

Bally Slouchy Leather Hobo HandbagThe Bally Slouchy Leather Hobo Handbag is an elegant, feminine purse with a lot of flirty details.

The gold rings which gather the strap, the knotted "sashes" on each side, the soft, buttery leather, the detail on the zipper pulls, the dainty Bally coat of arms ... what's not to love? As you might have guessed from that upper left corner, the bag also comes in black, with silver detail, but we especially love this in this supremely feminine, creamy white. It's the perfect antidote to all the dark colors we'll be seeing this season, and likely to be in style a lot longer. The details are simple, and the slouchy shape is likely to improve with wear -- just make sure you keep it clean.

It's larger than you might think; 20" wide by 12" tall with a 9" drop. The shape calls to mind the seashell-styles of the 1980s, but doesn't hit us over the head with it. Which we appreciate.

The Bally Slouchy Leather Hobo Handbag is available from Intermix for $875.00.

Helena de Natalio Carrie Leather Hobo, Handbag of the Day

helena de nataliio hobo
This is my first introduction to Helena de Natalio and I have to say I like what I see! The circular hobo shape makes it easy to wear for the woman on-the-go and the luscious electric blue color is divine (although it is also available in classic black). Not constrained by season in either its color or shape makes this relatively inexpensive handbag a year-round favorite. Complete with an adjustable shoulder strap that can expand from a thirteen-inch drop to a twenty-six-inch drop, two outside zipper pockets, three interior pockets and a zipper closure, this bag would make a fun addition to any ensemble for $394 available exclusively at Saks. (19" x 10" x 6")

Badgley Mischka Carina Leather Hobo, Handbag of the Day

hoboI love a good hobo -- handbag that is. They fit perfectly beneath your arm, hold enough essentials while still reserving room for the unexpected purchase, and comfortably sit on your shoulder without becoming a nuisance in daily life. Badgley Mischka's new Carina Leather Hobo, part of their platinum label, is available in Hunter -- a softened, dark green that speaks of cooler temperatures without insisting on a holiday-only occasion. Complete with a flat leather bow on the handle, gold-tone accents, zipper closure and three interior pockets, this useful bag looks easy to wear and enjoy for only $298. (14" x 11" x 5" with 11" strap drop)

Dautore Leather Linking Strap Flap Hobo, Handbag of the Day

The Leather Linking Strap Flap Hobo (say that ten times fast) by Dautore is a good example of how pastels can work any time of the year -- fall included! It's a pretty pale pink called 'Venus' and although it's fairly understated as a whole the most eye-catching feature is the intricately linked leather strap that looks both solid and dainty at the same time (is that even possible? I say it is). Other than that it has some lovely loose ruching around the flap-over front with magnetic closure and what I think is a very artsy logo-print lining. $580

Be & D Woodstock Hobo, Handbag of the Day

I love the color on this Woodstock Hobo by Be & D more than I've loved a handbag color in a long time -- it's so soothing! And it has an interesting 'cozy but chilled' vibe going on. Not crazy about the stiff-looking handle but I can see how it works with the overall shape and style of the bag. It's simple textured leather with a large exterior fold-over flap pocket, pretty silver studs on a decorative leather strap, and a beige suede lining. Magnetic snap closure, interior pockets x 3, $995.

Michael Kors Skorpios Hobo, Handbag of the Day

Everybody loves a good hobo bag, and this one by Michael Kors is no exception. Not sure why it's called "Skorpios" (I'm sure I'm missing something obvious so if you have an idea feel free to let me know in the comments) but it's an attractively simple bag, featuring a large ring that flops over the framed top on a braided leather strap and a matching single braided leather handle attached with smaller gold rings. $995

I'm thinking maybe the way the ring hangs over to the front of the bag is reminiscent of a scorpion's tail???

Nancy Gonzalez Zebra Hobo, Handbag of the Day

Nancy Gonzalez Zebra HoboOur love affair with Nancy Gonzalez continues with this striking Zebra Hobo.

Made in Columbia, this bag features a warm tan and black zebra-print haircalf exterior with shiny black Caiman fuscus crocodile accents, double top handles with a magnetic closure, and protective feet on the bottom. The inside has zipper pockets and a cell phone pocket, and at 13"H x 15"W x 4"D, this bag is big enough for day -- and still sexy and dressy enough for night.

What does this go with? Everything. Black compliments black, brown would pick up the golden tones, and white would be a sharp and fabulous contrast. That "Add to Wish List" button on the BG page has never been so enticing.

The Nancy Gonzales Zebra Hobo is available from Bergdorf Goodman for $2,550, unless you're in Canada. We don't know why.

Jimmy Choo Bardia Buckled Hobo, Handbag of the Day

Jimmy Choo Bardia Buckled HoboThe Jimmy Choo Bardia Buckled Hobo is a sexy bag for day or night.

The second thing we noticed about the bag (first was the pretty goldtone buckles which give it its alluring shape) was the texture. This is shagreen-embossed calf leather.

What's "shagreen," you ask? It's a leather made from rough, untanned skin. If it looks familiar to you, it's probably because it's the same stuff you see on the hilts of swords and daggers (the texture is good for gripping). Now, this is just shagreen-embossed, but the roughness is definitely achieved, and the effect is a rugged elegance.

The Jimmy Choo Bardia Buckled Hobo is available for pre-order from Neiman Marcus for $1,695.00.

Costume National Leather Hobo, Handbag of the Day

I don't know that the term "slouchy" has ever applied to a bag as much as it applies to this one. It's Costume National's Leather Hobo and in addition to the ultra-relaxed shape and roomy shoulder handle there's some ruching detail along each side for an extra dose of style. Available in brown or black, it has zip and cell phone pockets inside, a silk lining (a little unexpected glam!), and an inside hook closure. It's certainly a casual bag that would look great with a t-shirt and jeans. $1,125

Love Life Fringe Hobo, Handbag of the Day

For those looking to indulge their retro-chic cravings this season we have the Ed Hardy Love Life Fringe Hobo bag. Besides the obvious eye-catching multi-colored leather fringe, this bag features a rose with full rhinestone detail and the words "Love Life" written in black rhinestones on a small banner scene. This bag certainly has lots of color, lots of glimmer, and no shortage of eye-popping personality. You'll have to have guts to spare and be completely in love with this bag if you want to pull it off. $320

Braided Patchwork Hobo, Handbag of the Day

The Braided Patchwork Hobo by Bottega Veneta will bring soft, slouchy leather to your wardrobe in a pretty shade of light chocolate brown accented with darker brown weaving for a patchwork look turned slightly retro thanks to the thick braided double handle. The roomy interior is lined in luxe gray suede and features pockets that zip, snap, and hold your cell phone. Closes via magnet (I wish it zipped, personally) and is overall a very simple, casual statement that oozes class and timeless fashion appeal. Seems a worthwhile investment, $2,480.
