It's the Milton Hobo bag by Chloe in a bright metallic purple that although normally expected around springtime can fit just as easily into a fall ensemble by pairing it with other vibrant jewel tones and rich autumn neutrals. It's fairly structured for a hobo, looking a little like a standard slouchy hobo bag sitting inside a bucket. The Theory Python Trimmed Hobo uses snakeskin to add an upscale twist to an otherwise simple bag. The body of the hobo, which sits snuggly under an arm, is made of a waxed cotton canvas in black, which contrasts with the sleek, embossed python leather trim. The shoulder strap is a wide band, also made of the same python leather. There is a top zip closure, as well as an interior pocket. The large bag measures 13 1/2"H x 16"W x 2 1/2" D. Price: $495.
This new Britt Medium Hobo from Gucci is part of the designer's most recent collection, a fairly casual bag that is good for everyday use. The bag is made primarily of fabric bearing the beige/ebony Gucci logo pattern, but is trimmed in white leather. There is a gold-tone GG detail on the bottom front of the bag, where a bit of the trim has been raised to highlight it. The bag has a zip top, a flat shoulder strap and measures 12.5"H x 14"L x 1.75"W. Price $550.
Set against this dark grey dress, the Hildegard Hobo from Derek Lam looks a bit darker than it does in some of its other photos, but that illustrates how versatile the natural dark cream color of the soft leather bag is, changing by degrees to suit your look. The bag features brass hardware, including an accenting ram head link on the front amidst the pintucked gathers at the top of the bag's body. The leather handle is flat with only a 6" drop, but there is an attachable padded leather shoulder strap that is included. There is an open top and a suede lining, with a small leather coin pouch included for storing smaller items that need a bit more securing. It measures 13" x 9" x 6". Price: $1,800.
Christmas is over as far as online retailers are concerned and the post-holiday clearances are already beginning. Browsing through the selection at eLuxury, I spotted this gorgeous Etro Leather Hobo. Basic black on the outside with a bright teal satin lining, the bag is one that you can wear with anything, from jeans to a suit. It is large, measuring 17" x 9.25" x 7.5", and is accented with two teardrop-shaped links on the wide, flat shoulder strap. Price: $659 (orig. $995).
A really great design can overshadow a practical one quite easily when it comes to handbags, but it is hard to overlook practicality all the time. The Furla Virginie Grande Hobo has the advantage of having both a short, decorative chain strap and an adjustable shoulder strap, so it can easily be adjusted to suit your preferences. The bag is made of leather and comes in Cognac, Onxy or Sand (pictured), accented with gold hardware. It has a zip closure top and a small zip pocket, sized to fit cellphones or keys, at each end. It measures 14"W x 9"H x 8"D. Price: $530.
It's not made of leather, though it does have a leather strap, and there isn't a speck of brown anywhere to be seen, so this Crawford Hobo Bag from Be & D really throws off some of the more popular looks for handbags of the moment in favor of the clean, perfectly balanced pairing of black and white. The eye-catching zig zag pattern is done as a knit and the bag is lined in suede. It is unstructured and rather slouchy, with a single button closure at the top, so it's great for pairing with jeans, especially if you want a bag that will make an impact. Price: $1,545.
Many of the handbags from Juicy are a little over-the-top in terms of accessories and ornamentation. While "youth" is a big part of their image, their handbags do not appeal to as broad an audience as some of the other designers we like. That said, their Betsy Leather Hobo is a refreshing change. The simple bag is made of smooth leather that is slightly gathered at the top, where there is a thin leather belt encircling the opening and a heart charm attached. The lining is canvas and all the hardware is silver. It measures 11½"H X 19"L X 5"W. Price: $350.
The bold pattern on Kate Spade's new Mala Blue Hobo was inspired by the "bold patterns [seen] on the savannah" at the Mala Mala Game Preserve in South Africa. Not having observed the African savannah in great detail personally, I can't speak to whether the design is a realistic representation of naturally occurring patterns, but it is beautiful even if the details of the patterns don't match up. The unstructured bag is made of leather-trimmed haircalf and is accented with a large, geometric gold turnlock closure. Price: $675.
