Tudor Heritage Advisor Watch

For 2011 there was not much new in the Tudor watch department. The most noteworthy piece was the Heritage Advisor watch. In a nutshell it is a retro-styled timepiece with a mechanical alarm complication module over a base ETA automatic movement. That alone is fine, but the design and personality of this watch leave much more to be desired from the baby-Rolex brand.

Tudor isn't a brand available in the US. There is a good reason for that. It would harm Rolex's market position as they are less-expensive, but made in the same place. Unlike Rolex pieces, Tudor pieces don't use in-house made movements. Usually they offer their own, more entry-level versions of Rolex favorites, but Tudor has been trying to move away from that model as of late.

Louis Erard Héritage Sport Chrono Automatic Watch

Louis Erard Héritage Sport Chrono Automatic Watch

Tasteful and conservative representing a good value for a Swiss watch is usually what you get with Louis Erard timepieces. None of those unspoken mottos change with the new for 2011 Heritage Sport Chronograph Automatic watch. You pretty much have a steel sports chronograph watch with applied Roman numeral hour markers. This watch doesn't attempt to "rock the boat" at all, but just offers something with wide appeal.

The 42mm wide case is in steel and dial colors available include blue, black, and silver. There is also a women's model with mother-of-pearl and diamonds. The polished bezel slopes dramatically, while there is another slope on the inside of the dial for the flange ring that has the tachymeter scale on it. This will give the appearance of a "deep-set' dial. The hands are large and lume covered for easy reading. Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic movement. With large pushers and an easy to read face, the Louis Erard Heritage Sport Chrono won't win and fancy design awards, but will likely offer a painless wearing experience. Translated - makes for a good gift.

Nivrel Héritage Grand Chronographe Watch

Nivrel Heritage Grand Chrono
New from German based Nivrel is this duo of "Heritage Grand Chronographe" watches. I say - that if you are going to place an "e" after "chronograph," you might as well put and "e" after "grand." Am I right? Extra "Es" for all!

The Heritage Grand Chronograph collection is just that. Two 42mm wide steel watch in classic German heritage style watch cases with German silver (not actually silver) guilloche engraved dials. Blued steel hands and black or brown alligator straps complete the "heritage" look.

Nivrel will offer the watch with two movements. One comes with a Swiss ETA 7750 automatic chronograph, and the other comes with a Swiss ETA 7751 automatic chronograph with moon phase and annual date. Simple and classic in demeanor, these pieces are nevertheless quite nice and offer a look sought by many people for a price more reasonable than the Swiss offer. I would say that these watches compare to offerings from brands such as Longines. Check out the cool large and round chronograph pushers as well. Price for the 7750 based model is 1,995 euros, while the 7751 based Heritage Grand Chronograph is 2,595 euros. Look for them soon.

Eterna Heritage Pulsometer Chronograph Watch

In addition to the beautiful Eterna Heritage Super KonTiki 1973 throw-back watch that Eterna released this year, they will also release this Heritage Pulsometer Chronograph watch. Based on a classic pulsometer (pulse measuring watch) from the mid 20th century. While updated in size and technology a bit, the base look of the classic Pulsometer Chronograph is retained - complete with curious green and blue color tones on the dial. Pulsometer watches make good gifts or purchases for discerning doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. The steel case (love those classic looking pushers and crown), is sized here at 42mm wide with a sapphire crystal, and is water resistant to 50 meters.

As the original came out around 1942, this limited edition watch will be limited to 1,942 pieces. Movement is a Swiss ETA 2894-2 automatic, that has had the chronograph hours subdial removed. The watch is a bit pricey for such a niche piece at 3,950 Swiss Francs - though the quality and attention to detail on the watch are good. Look for the Eterna Heritage Pulsometer Chronograph limited edition watch out soon.

Gucci Heritage Medium Bag, Handbag of the Day

Gucci Heritage Medium BagThe Gucci Heritage Medium Bag is kicky carry-all for ladies who aren't afraid of a little color.

We just love the retro military-esque stripes on the soft, buttery Italian leather of this charming bag. At 17"W X 10"H X 5"D, it's surprisingly roomy despite its demure shape. The silvertone buckle at the front is just decoration; the flap-top closes with a snap. The buckles on the sides, though, are real, and can be adjusted to accommodate your heavier-load days.

While not especially dressy, this bag makes a perfect companion for the local golf or country club with its preppy air, as well as shopping days in your jeans and weekend visits to the office. Pair it with some bright red heels for an adorable matchy-matchy effect. If you have a pair of red and green heels, keep them in the closet; that would be out of control.

The Gucci Heritage Medium Bag is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,850.00.

BMW Launches New Divisions Dedicated to Classics

bmw classics

It has never been a better time to own or race a vintage BMW. The German automaker has announced two new divisions specifically aimed at assisting the proprietors of its classic vehicles.

The first is actually an expansion of what was previously known as the Heritage Workshop. Previously dedicated to maintaining the company's own fleet of classic automobiles and motorcycles, the division has been re-christened as the BMW Classic Center, opening its doors to the public in the process.

In addition to servicing, certifying and even dealing in classic BMWs, the company's classics department has also launched a dedicated Motorsport Division. The new initiative, headed by a former BMW sportscar racing director, has been established specifically to cater to vintage racing machines from BMW and Mini, preparing them for revival events and classics rallies.

BMW estimates that some 600,000 of its automobiles and another 70,000 motorcycles built up from its foundation through the 1980s are still on the road, representing 10% of its historic production.

Tudor Heritage Chrono Watch - Big Deal?

tudor heritage chrono
Lots of people have been making a big deal out of the new Tudor Heritage Chrono watch. Yes it comes with that cool brown and orange "seat buckle" strap (metal bracelet as well), and looks '70s retro chic, but is it really that big of a deal? I got to check out this piece at Baselworld recently and don't understand all the fuss. For Americans, Tudor is a "baby" Rolex brand that is no longer sold in the US. Tudor pulled out of the US maybe 10 years ago or longer. Why? Not totally sure, but I can guess. Probably because the lower cost brand would either compete with, or lower the image of Rolex. Tudor watches are not made with the same high quality refinement that Americans have come to expect and enjoy from Rolex. Tudor watches are pretty much inferior, less expensive alternatives. So to protect the rock-solid Rolex image, Rolex probably decided to pull the Tudor brand out of the US.

While the Tudor Heritage Chrono looks decent enough, it is nothing special. For what it likely costs there are dozens of better options. The dial on the original is flat and merely printed, with the new version updated with applied hour markers and a removal of the cyclops. Finishing on the case is merely OK, and the hands and dial aren't spectacular in quality. I have a feeling that nostalgia is the best marketing force for timepieces like this. Once the initial "wow" of the design wears off, I don't think a piece like this has too much staying power on one's wrist.

The watch itself is 42mm wide and has an automatic 45 minute chronograph. Not sure what the movement is, but it is likely a modified ETA or alike. Probably an ETA 7734 or similar. There is a black on black or gray on black dial, and an interesting placement of a date magnifier lens at 6 o'clock. The bezel rotates in both direction, and looks a bit too retro if you ask me. Overall, not the worst watch over, but certainly not the "modern classic icon" people make it out to be, from a design and finishing perspective. See images of the new version in the gallery below.

Luxury Turkeys for Thanksgiving

The New York Times taste tested several different kinds of turkeys, from the standard supermarket Butterball to more exotic heritage bred birds to find out which ones were worthy of your table. The concluded that good cooking can make almost any turkey acceptable, but the clear winners of the test were the Bourbon Red and an American Bronze heritage birds, the organic bird and the domesticated wild turkey. If you want to serve a clear winner on Thanksgiving here is where to get them:

  • Heritage Farms - They have organic heritage turkeys and you can get a 20-lb bird for about $200. They're almost sold out, though, so you might want to order now.
  • Dartagnan - You'll find organic turkeys here and can get a 18-20-lb one for $130. They also carry smaller heritage birds (10-12-lb) for about $116.
  • Griggstown - They carry free-range tradition turkeys at $113 for 18-20-lb birds, as well as Red Bourbon heritage turkeys (12-15-lbs for $150)
