Henry Dunay Designs Inventory Sold For A Deep Discount

In every misfortune there is an opportunity. Earlier this year SimplexDiam sold off diamonds which belonged to closed jewelry retailer Fortunoff. Now the company is one of the key players in making up the assets of the bankrupt Henry Dunay Designs. SimplexDiam and online estate jewelry seller Windsor Jewelers were the top top bidders to the inventory. Together the companies bid $3.5 million for the rights to the inventory which was valued at $50 million. The auction was held on Wednesday.

SimplexDiam values and purchases diamonds and fine jewelry and has been involved in the bidding for the residual inventories in the cases of Friedman's Jewelers, Whitehall Jewelers and Christian Bernard Stores Corp. Windsor Jewelers sells estate and fine jewelry direct to consumers at discounted prices. Which means that Dunay aficionados may soon be able to get their hands on his pieces at lower prices. Bad news for Dunay but great news for fans of his work.

Henry Dunay Designs Closing

Sad news for fans of jeweler Henry Dunay. Over the summer Henry Dunay Designs filed Chapter 11. Now it has been announced that the brand is officially over. An auction of the company's inventory is scheduled for December 16. Dunay told National Jeweler that he is not giving up the jewelry business completely and that he will still be doing special orders and custom pieces. As he puts it, "they're not getting rid of me yet." Good news for anyone who is a fan of Dunay's unique wearable works of art. He can be reached for special orders by calling the numbers used for Henry Dunay Designs: (800) 888-2525 or (212) 768-9700. For more information on the Dec. 16 auction, contact Jay Silverberg, Dunay's attorney from the New York office of Sils, Cummis and Gross, PC, at (212) 500-1587.

Henry Dunay Designs Files Chapter 11

High-end jewelry has been taking it on the chin lately. We've seen several top tier jewelry design companies file for bankruptcy and now one of my favorites has gone Chapter 11. National Jeweler reports that Henry Dunay Designs filed at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the Southern District of New York in Manhattan citing that it has 100 and 199 creditors with assets between $1 million and $10 million and liabilities between $1 million and $10 million.

I had a chance to view Henry Dunay's designs at the JCK show in Las Vegas in 2008 and meet Mr. Dunay personally. He's no newcomer to the jewelry world, He started as an apprentice at the age of 14 in New York and has spent over 50 years in the jewelry business, launching Henry Dunay Designs back in 1965. Since then he was won dozens of awards for his designs (including being named the world's best jewelry designer by the Robb Report in 2000 and 2001) and his pieces have appeared in countless magazine spreads and in his coffee table book, "Henry Dunay A Precious Life."

For jewelers dealing in couture design, this economy has been particularly brutal. Materials including gold and gemstones continue to be expensive, production costs are rising but sales are falling. Dunay sells in stores which have been experiencing decreased business including Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. Hopefully Henry Dunay Designs will be able to survive this rough patch and get back to the business of making beautiful jewelry.

The Beautiful Designs of Henry Dunay

Walking through the room at the JCK Luxury show in Las Vegas was a dizzying experience, diamonds and gemstones glittering behind glass in every direction. In a situation like that beauty can become a blur but the designs of Henry Dunay immediately caught my eye. Henry Dunay has had a long career in the jewelry business. He started as an apprentice at the age of 14 in New York and has spent over 50 years in the jewelry business, launching Henry Dunay Designs back in 1965. Since then he was won dozens of awards for his designs (including being named the world's best jewelry designer by the Robb Report in 2000 and 2001) and his pieces have appeared in countless magazine spreads. Last year marked the publication of his coffee table book, "Henry Dunay A Precious Life."

Dunay creates both one-of-a-kind pieces as well as collection of earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings which are sold at stores including Bergdorf Goodman. The gallery below is just a small sample of his designs which have a organic sculptural quality that makes them distinctive. Dunay also uses a finish on his gold called the Sabi finish which which is a hand-textured soft finish that he sometimes combines with a high-gloss finish for contrast. The designs are highly collectible and often fetch high prices at auctions and estate sales. The gallery below shows just a sample of this talented man's work.
