Martin Margiela Ruby Helmet

Martin Margiela Helmet
Wearing a standard black helmet might be cookie-cutter and boring but then crazy flames or loads of Swarovski crystals aren't for everyone either, in which case this Martin Margiela design for Ruby might be just the right kind of middle ground. Great for guys or gals it features distinctive drawings, doodles, and scribbles that are inspired by graffiti from the Maison's window plus Ruby's emblems engraved on the hardware. Available only in white with a carbon and lamb leather shell and antibacterial lining, it's limited to 600 pieces and retails for $1,195.

Ice Couture's Crystal-Encrusted Ski Helmets

Ice Couture Ski HelmetsIce Couture helmets were invented by Dareece Saca because she just couldn't stand to wear a ski helmet unless it was pretty and had some fashionable bling on it. "I'll never wear a helmet unless it's crystallized like a Judith Leiber bag." So she affixed crystals to her own helmet by hand and got so many compliments that a business idea was born.

The helmets are expected to hit it big next season as more and more skiers are looking for a way to make being safe on a slopes more stylish -- why can't your helmet be an accessory of sorts? Saca's designs include everything from girly pink camouflage to edgier skull and crossbones patterns. $200-$2000

Lagerfeld Debuts Mink-Covered iPod Helmets

Filed under: Apparel, Gadgets, Luxury Cars & Autos

At his Paris fashion show on Sunday, the ever-entertaining Karl Lagerfeld debuted a new line of luxurious mink-covered scooter helmets with built-in iPod capability. The over-the-top accessories were created in collaboration with French luxury helmet maker Les Ateliers Ruby and Apple. They're road legal and feature full carbon fiber shells and ultra-soft burgundy nappa lambskin linings. The iPod hookup lets you pipe music directly to the earpieces.

Lagerfeld, who also heads up Chanel and Fendi, showed matching mink vests and other garments in the futuristic fashion show for his eponymous label. Apparently the haute helmets are Lagerfeld's comment on the recessed economy. "Now everyone is on scooters, even chic women, so we had to do the helmet," he explained. No word yet on when the helmets might be made available for sale or what their price would be, but safe to say they'll be extremely expensive.

Giro Omen Helmet

A while back, no one wore a helmet to ride a bike or play hockey. But we've all gotten a bit smarter about protecting our noggins and now skiers and snowboarders are starting to wear helmets. Giro, a company which makes excellent bike helmets, also makes great snow helmets. The Giro Omen is a light helmet with an ergonomic fit and vents which can be closed or opened to help regulate your temperature. The helmet also accommodates TuneUps, Giro's system for wireless audio that lets you zoom around with your music and control your sound without fumbling through your clothes to find your iPod. Kevin Kennedy over at Outside recently gave the Giro Omen a thorough workout and offers a great review of the product. With the Tuneups system the helmet sells for around $370 or is around $200 without.
