Pretty Penny, Estate of the Day

Pretty Penny in Nyack, New York is the sort of home where anyone would want to spend a weekend away. And many famous people have, including President Reagan, Cole Porter, Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, and Marilyn Monroe. The home's celebrated history comes courtesy of its former owner, the actress Helen Hayes. The theater star bought the Victorian home on the Hudson river with her screenwriter husband Charles MacArthur in the 1930s. The six-bedroom home has been restored in a way that retains much of its charm including the original murals. Although the kitchen and the bathrooms may be new, the sense of history, of a life steeped in the arts, remains in these walls. The property includes a pool, fountains, terraced gardens and sculpture. The home has been on the market since at least 2007 and has had a couple of price reductions. It is now listed at $5.8 million.
