Courvoisier Packs a Punch with Heathrow Bar

Most consumers of cognac probably enjoy theirs neat and straight, but Courvoisier would like you to think about using it for mixed drinks. To that end, the French company is launching the Courvoisier Spirit of Punch initiative.

The centerpiece of the push will be a dedicated bar at Terminal 3 of London's Heathrow Airport, where parent company Beam Global Spirits & Wine expects as many as 5,000 passengers will stop by to sample its Spiced Orchard Punch – made with Courvoisier Exclusif fine champagne cognac – before it closes shop after just a couple of weeks.

Other initiatives in the Spirit of Punch will include displaying a giant punch-bowl good for 6,000 people and seminars on the history of punch.

Author Takes Up Residence In Heathrow Airport

Being a writer-in-residence can take you to some interesting places, a friend of mine once spent a season in the Yukon as one. Philosopher Alain de Botton gets off a little easier he only has to spend one week at Heathrow Airport's Terminal Five. De Botton is the first ever writer-in-residence at a UK airport. The BBC News reports that he will have access to all areas and will write a book about the experience. After the book is written he will give away 10,000 copies. Check out the BBC News video where de Botton refers to the Departures area as the "most romantic" area of the airport.

Delta and KLM Offer A New Reason To Hang At Heathrow

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Wings

London's Heathrow Airport seems to be the spot if you want to wile away a layover in a luxury airport lounge. The latest comes from an alliance between Delta Air Lines and the Air France KLM group. The two-level minimalist styled lounge features a spa, restaurant, wine bar, oxygen bar and entertainment hub. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also reports that the lounge has an indoor "living wall" made up of over 60 types of plants which is located near various seating areas. Weary travelers can sit in full-body massage chairs, use personal computers, take a shower or grab a nap in a daybed.

Heathrow Airport
also has a lavish British Airways airport lounge and Virgin's Heathrow clubhouse is more like a resort with a Cowshed spa that includes tanning booths, a Bumble and bumble hair salon, a pool, cinema, cocktail bar and a business center. The airport boasts a variety of restaurants including one by Gordon Ramsay and shopping that includes Burberry, Versace, Hermes and Cartier.

Sheikh Flies His Lamborghini to UK for an Oil Change

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

A rich Middle Eastern magnate believed to be a Sheikh flew his brand new Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 on a 6,500 mile roundtrip from Qatar to London just for an oil change the other day. The London Sun reports that the 640 h.p., $380,000 supercar - the same model as the one driven by Batman in The Dark Knight - painted black and gold arrived at Heathrow in the cargo hold of a Qatar Airways jet and was taken to a Lamborghini specialist in London for servicing, adding $7,000 to the estimated $40,000 cost of the flight.

News of the resource-wasting trip drew the ire of environmental groups, including Friends of the Earth's Richard Dyer who told the paper that "Flying a car thousands of miles for a service is ludicrous when planes are one of the most polluting ways to transport goods." However, David Price of the Lamborghini Club UK insisted, "If an owner wants to service his car in that way, it is his choice. Thankfully the age of excess in some areas continues."

Gordon Ramsay Serves Deluxe Airport Food

Would you go to the airport just to eat at a restaurant? Airport food has been steadily getting better over the last few years with more and more middle-range restaurants working their way into airports but Gordon Ramsay Plane Food at Heathrow Airport seems a step beyond that. The Telegraph sent Jasper Gerard to check out the fare at the restaurant in the swanky new Terminal 5 in a review as heavy in plane metaphors as you might expect a review about an airport restaurant to be.

Gordon Ramsay Plane Food offers take-away food and promises to serve food fast for those who have to make a flight. It doesn't look like an airport restaurant with it's large windows and restrained decor. Gerrard seems pleased with the meal but raises the question that is on my mind too, who would get to the airport early enough to have a fine dining experience before boarding? Certainly it's unlikely that many will wade through the ridiculous security lines to eat in another Ramsay restaurant unless they have a flight but kudos to Ramsay for at least attempting to add a little elegance back to the world of flying.

Kate Moss Loses Her Louis Vuittons

Celebrities are no different than the rest of us, sometimes they lose their luggage. But they may have a lot more help getting it back than the rest of us do. Kate Moss flew first class by British Airways to Los Angeles from Heathrow airport's fancy new Terminal 5 two weeks ago and when she arrived ten of her bags were missing. Inside Moss's missing Louis Vuitton bags were prototypes for her latest collection for Topshop. She reportedly could receive a £10,000 payout for the inconvenience of the missing bags something that might make other passengers a little angry. Moss's bags were just some of the estimated 28,000 that went missing when the terminal opened at the end of March.

Kate has some big guns in her corner, billionaire Sir Philip Green, the head of Topshop helped to make sure the bags were found. She received two bags a couple of days after arriving in Los Angeles and all ten have now been located although it's not known if they've all made it into Moss's hands yet. Supermodels have been tough business for British Airways recently; they have already banned Naomi Campbell from their airline after an on-board scuffle.

$1 Million Jewelry Theft at Heathrow

Lindsay Lohan was leaving Heathrow Airport on Thursday when she noticed that her orange Hermes Birkin bag was missing. The bag itself might have gotten only a moment or two of mourning from the young celebrity, but the theft is now under investigation by Scotland Yard because that bag contained about $1 million worth of jewelry. Lindsay left it on her luggage trolley and must have turned away just long enough for someone to snag it. She is asking for the return her things, but given the value of the items taken, it seems unlikely that the thief will comply.

Update: Looks like someone actually found the bag and turned it in!
