Big Heart Zip Clutch, Handbag of the Day

marc jacobs big heart clutch
Tis the season for love, hearts, and girliness, and the Big Heart Zip Clutch by Marc Jacobs doesn't fail us! Leather appliqués in varying shades (of pink and purple of course) and textures generously cover the front and back, and almost look like they're floating around the bag as opposed to being stuck on it. Other than the hearts aplenty the design is pretty simple, featuring a gold hardware zip-tip closure, fine textile lining, and an interior patch pocket.

I really like it, although the color scheme gets on my nerves a little (I think red, white, and black would be awesome). $795

How Do You Feel About Hearts?

I have a friend who mentioned the other day in passing (I think she might be secretly hoping that her boyfriend hits me up for hints about what she likes) that she loves hearts in jewelry, especially heart-shaped gems. When she said that I couldn't help but remember a situation years ago when another friend actually cried when her boyfriend got her a heart-shaped amethyst pendant for her birthday, saying "how could he not know that I hate hearts in jewelry?"

Some women see hearts as corny and immature, while others see them as a universal and age-old symbol of romance and love. What's your take?

Fetty of Brooklyn's Beautiful Broken Hearts

Jewelry has traditionally been about femininity and beauty, with designers taking inspiration from the best and most beautiful things in life. But a growing trend lately is for designers to focus on exactly the opposite, expressing darker images of skulls, guns, weapons, and broken hearts. Fetty of Brooklyn has an interesting collection featuring themes of broken, beaten, and cut up hearts paired with the weapons that did the damage. The Royalty line is made of white and yellow gold decorated with pavé diamonds and other precious gems. The designs carry names like "Shot through the Heart" and "I Saw My Love" and are available as necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.

Art Hearts by Chris Uphues

You can never run out of ways to say "I love you" - or so I've been told. I've also been told that people are sick of the limited card options at stationary and gift stores. Instead of looking for something new and innovative, why not combine a message of love with the fuzzy feelings of nostalgia via Chris Uphues' Art Hearts. These Valentine hearts are reminiscent of elementary school art projects, made with acrylic paint on sturdy, red paper. Each one has a unique face and measures 7.5" x 11". Instead of giving a regular card, one of these really would be a new way to say "I love you." Price: $10.

Bag of Hearts

You may not be able to literally give your heart away (probably for the best, come to think of it), but you can give away a Bag of Hearts to your significant other. Exclusively at Vivre, this lovely Valentine's gift includes a set of five sterling silver hearts that are inscribed with messages for your one and only: True Love, Forever, Be Mine, Sexy and I Love You. All of the hearts come in a red velvet bag, but it would probably make your Valentine's day to hide them around where you know she (or he) will find them throughout the day. Price: $100.

Chocolate Heart Box

As amazing as the Chocolate Truffle Box Cake was, sometimes less is more and a simpler box of chocolates might be the best choice for a romantic gift. But bear in mind that I said simpler, not simple. The Chocolate Heart Box offered at Dean and Deluca is an elegantly decorated collection of decadent chocolate truffles packed inside an equally lovely box - a box that is itself made of molded chocolate. The box weighs one pound and contains a mixture of dark, milk and white chocolates truffles. Price: $28.

The Body Shop Sweet Strawberry Gift Set

Not all Valentine gifts are big splashy romance items. This new gift set from The Body Shop would be great for a friend, daughter or anyone who needs a dose of some fruity fun in the midst of winter. The set includes strawberry shower gel, body scrub, body butter,. a heart-shaped soap and a pink shower pouf. It sells for $30.

Dotty Heart Ceramics

These drop-dead adorable Dotty Heart plates from Sur La Table are part of an entire line that includes ice cream bowls, a canister and teacup and saucer sets. The ceramic set features colorful hearts and the sets include pink or red interiors. A set of four 7.5" diameter plates sell for $19.50. They are probably too cutsey for your Valentine's Day dinner but would be very sweet as a gift for a friend.

Hublot St. Valentine Chronograph

Another Valentine-themed watch makes it's appearance. This time it's from Hublot, the company famed for their massive Big Bang watch. Their “St. Valentine” chronograph isn't exactly wimpy either, measuring 42.5mm. The watch has a burgundy flammé dial decorated with small hearts, large Arabic numerals and small numbers. The minute hand is finished with an arrow turning around the dial and there is a double sapphire anti-reflection crystal. The watch is done in steel treated with black PVD with an enlarged bezel in black rubber and 12 titanium screws. The strap is also black rubber. The watch sells for $8,200. I'm curious who the audience is for this, it may have hearts but it sure isn't a girly watch. And yet even though it has Hublot's typically masculine chunky style, it is still heart-festooned.
