Heart Neckace Benefits Doctors Without Borders

mini heart necklace
Most heart jewelry doesn't feature a realistic rendition of a heart but then again most heart jewelry doesn't benefit real hearts. Anna Ruth Henriques' "Mini Heart" pendant is made from sterling silver and molded in the form of a human heart. The tiny heart is on an organic cotton cord and is decorated with 18K gold and ruby accents. It sells for $395 and proceeds benefit Doctors Without Borders, a well-respected organization which provides aid to people who have been unable to get healthcare by traditional means due to war, disasters and other reasons.

Henriques grew in Jamaica and her great-uncle was an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who worked in the Kingston Public Hospital and told her stories of ill people awaiting care. She also got to meet interns from the U.S. who worked in the hospital and realized that programs like these benefit both patients and doctors. The pendant is available online and at Barneys New York.

Big Heart Zip Clutch, Handbag of the Day

marc jacobs big heart clutch
Tis the season for love, hearts, and girliness, and the Big Heart Zip Clutch by Marc Jacobs doesn't fail us! Leather appliqués in varying shades (of pink and purple of course) and textures generously cover the front and back, and almost look like they're floating around the bag as opposed to being stuck on it. Other than the hearts aplenty the design is pretty simple, featuring a gold hardware zip-tip closure, fine textile lining, and an interior patch pocket.

I really like it, although the color scheme gets on my nerves a little (I think red, white, and black would be awesome). $795

Kris Van Assche Makes Heart Necklaces Fashionable For Men

Most of the time big flashy heart-shaped pendants are for women but fashion designer Kris Van Assche is helping men wear their heart around their neck with a line of heart-shaped necklaces. His latest is the "Para Siempre" necklace was, he says in an article in the International Herald Tribune, inspired by South American spirit and passion. Van Assche, who has his own brand and also works as artistic director for Dior Homme often includes jewelry as part of his men's collections. His heart-shaped necklaces also seem to indicate his personal experience. In Spring/Summer 2007 he did 'Love Hurts' but he's feeling a bit more tender now, para siempre means forever. The necklace is available in gold plate or silver with a blue enamel, heart-shaped inscribed medallion and sells for $220 or $500.

Fetty of Brooklyn's Beautiful Broken Hearts

Jewelry has traditionally been about femininity and beauty, with designers taking inspiration from the best and most beautiful things in life. But a growing trend lately is for designers to focus on exactly the opposite, expressing darker images of skulls, guns, weapons, and broken hearts. Fetty of Brooklyn has an interesting collection featuring themes of broken, beaten, and cut up hearts paired with the weapons that did the damage. The Royalty line is made of white and yellow gold decorated with pavé diamonds and other precious gems. The designs carry names like "Shot through the Heart" and "I Saw My Love" and are available as necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.

'My Beating Heart' for Valentine's Day

No, not the actual heart in my chest...that could be messy. Meant to soothe and calm one who hugs it close to them, My Beating Heart is fun, fuzzy and a great idea for Valentine's Day. Its rhythmic beat is said to mimic the thump-thump we hear deep in all our chests just at the touch of a button. There are even two sizes, since they have recently been redesigned, one being small enough for kids to enjoy. I should mention these are limited editions so once a style has run out, its gone.

I'm thinking my dog might even enjoy this! She's always climbing up on me trying to snuggle -- I bet when we are out of town it would be pretty comforting -- just have to train her to turn it on...

Blancpain St. Valentin 2008 Watch

Blancpain has unveiled their Saint-Valentin 2008 watch. Each year the watch company looks for a new variation on the heart theme. This year's watch plays down the heart angle, opting for a simple red heart outline which also serves as the small seconds hand. The watch features two rows of diamonds on the double-stepped bezel. It is water-resistant to 50 meters thanks to a screw-lock crown and screw-down back. The 34 mm-diameter case is stainless steel and the dial is mother of pearl. The watch uses the self-winding Calibre 6763 movement which has a 100-hour power reserve and a complete calendar with a pointer-type date display, along with day of the week, month and moon-phase indications. I has a sapphire crystal display case back and a white alligator leather strap and will be a limited edition of 99.

Phillips and Swarovski's Active Crystal Collection

There's always room for more bling in our lives, sometimes in the most unlikely of places. It's not that I haven't seen decked out USB drives before, but I guess I just figure if you're going to go there then do it right and go all out. The Phillips-Swarovski Active Crystal collection definitely goes there, squeezing as many Swarovski crystals as possible onto some very cute electronic gadgets. For USB drives there's the 1 GB "Heart Beat," a two-piece locket style, and the 1 GB "Lock-Out," and retractable padlock shaped one, both of which will sell for $179.

The collection also includes headphones and earbuds with large crystals embedded in each ear piece. Available in 4 different designs they will range in price from $79-$149. The entire line is scheduled to come out this August.

The influental 20th century Dutch designer created the Heart Shaped Cone Chair in the late 1950's. Panton was able to expand the public's opinion and perception of modern furinture design by his unexpected use of bold vibarnt color and off the wall use of shape. Baccarat Heart Pendant

The Baccarat Heart Pendant features a hand-crafted blood-red cube of Baccarat crystal suspended from a simple black cotton cord. The overall look is quite casual when compared to some of the diamond-studded Valentine's Day necklaces available, but the finely etched hearts on the cube are sure to get noticed. Measuring 18" in length, the cord can be doubled up to form a choker, nestling the cube at the base of the neck, or left long and dangling. Price: $280.

Art Hearts by Chris Uphues

You can never run out of ways to say "I love you" - or so I've been told. I've also been told that people are sick of the limited card options at stationary and gift stores. Instead of looking for something new and innovative, why not combine a message of love with the fuzzy feelings of nostalgia via Chris Uphues' Art Hearts. These Valentine hearts are reminiscent of elementary school art projects, made with acrylic paint on sturdy, red paper. Each one has a unique face and measures 7.5" x 11". Instead of giving a regular card, one of these really would be a new way to say "I love you." Price: $10.

Alessi Big Love Ice Set

The Big Love Ice Cream Bowl is definitely a fun way to have a sundae, made better by the heart-shaped spoon that accompanies it. The bowl, which is available in three colors, has an acrylic outer bowl/stand that puts your dessert at a convenient height and gives it a distinctive look. A large stainless steel interior bowl helps to keep your ice cream cold as you eat, and the heart-shaped stainless steel spoon is included just for fun. Both pieces were designed by Miriam Mirri for Alessi. Price, as a set: $43.
