Epson Ensemble HD Home Cinema System

With "staycations" becoming popular in this tough economy, you might opt to stay in more often and watch a good movie. But as a Luxist reader, you know that we don't mean using on-demand ... instead, we bring you the cool new Epson Ensemble HD Home Cinema System, via Uncrate. Priced from $5,000 - $7,000, this real home theater in a box includes a 100-inch motorized screen, an Epson PowerLite 3LCD projector with either 720p or 1080p resolution, an Atlantic Technology speaker system with a 150-watt sub, an A/V controller with HDMI handling and an upconverting DVD player and a universal remote. This PDF tells you all you need to know, or go here.

Samsung Promises 70" LCD, Again

Although they ragged us with a sneak peak of this behemoth back in August, Samsung has finally announced the official release date for the largest mass-produced LCD TV in the world to be February (actually, "February or March") 2007.

The 70-incher provides 1080p flat panel resolution with 8ms response time and 2000:1 contrast ratio – but what's even more exciting is the fact that Samsung claims that they will be manufacturing a million of the bad boys annually. Nice.

No word on price yet, but seeing as they've sort of got the market cornered here (and very well may have it cornered for a while), we're hoping they'll be nice, responsible market-creators and keep 'er well below five digits.

What's the Difference Between p and i?

So you just got that sweet new Mitsubishi 62" DLP2 with the newest of new HDMI and 1080p, but, uhh, what's the diff? Well most gadget geeks already know the difference between progressive signals and interlaced ones, but this article explains it without nerd speak as best it can. What it boils down to is, in the TVs of today, everything is going to be converted to something your set can understand, and picture quality won't suffer if things don't match up.

Optoma Big Vizion In-Wall HDTV

When you want a big-screen TV, there are three main things to take into consideration: cost, quality and appearance. For appearance, most people want a flat panel TV because it allows them to make the best use of their space. High definition is the clear winner in the picture quality department, but when you combine HDTV with a flat, plasma screen TV, the costs can go through the roof if you want a TV of a decent size. The solution is to go through the wall instead of the roof. Optoma offers a  Big Vizion In-Wall HDTV, which is a 100-in. rear-projection TV that is built into the wall, giving it the look of a flat panel TV at a fraction of the cost. Given that a 71" HD plasma can cost up to almost $70,000, this gorgeous big-screen is quite the bargain, priced at about $20,000.
