Snow Bunny Chic, Hot Looks For Cold Weather

The winter season is in full swing. And that means it's time to hit the slopes. Skiing is such an exhilarating sport and one that I've been learning for the past 5 years. As much as I love the sport itself - the anticipation that builds while your on the lift, the thrill you experience as you first rush down the mountain, the peace of mind you have as you find your rhythm and skillfully maneuver your way down to the bottom - I really enjoyed buying all the gear that comes with it.

Seeing D&G's Fall 2010 collection revived an excitement for hitting the slopes and looking as stylish as possible. Their collection was filled with traditional winter motifs but paired with unexpected pieces like a snowflake sweater bodysuit and reindeer full body all in ones. So to get you ready for ski season, we've gathered some fashionably chic ski gear essentials to not only keep you warm but also looking your best as you ski down the mountain slopes or lounge in front of a fireplace in the lodge.

No More Cold Ears, The Colorful Hats Of Lou Mistraou

The story of Lou Mistraou began with the mistral, the sweeping wind that whips across France. Cold ears led to inspiration and the colorful hats of Lou Mistraou. The hand-made winter hats from one of the last haute-couture chapeau makers are simple, bright and modern. They are available either leather or wool flannel stuffed with a wool filing and lined in pure silk. The silk hats come in bright blue, purple, orange and olive green and sell for $275. The leather hats in yellow, red or rosy pink are $475. They are available in New York City boutiques including DDC Lab and Jussara Lee and can also be ordered online.

Knitwits Sesame Street Hats & Mittens for Kids

Little kids look so adorable all bundled up in winter clothing - the hats, mittens, scarves and their puffy winter snowsuits. I'm sure if you asked them, they're probably not that comfortable – but they do look super adorable. Seeing these little kids reminds me of that Cosby Show episode when little Rudy had to use the bathroom and her dad tried to get her out of her snowsuit. That moment was hilarious. And one that every parent can relate to.

I came across Knitwits playful Sesame Street Hats ($40) & Mittens ($40) and it immediately made me think of moments like that and the fun kids have in the snow, even in their constricting, multi-layered, marshmallow man get up. The Sesame Street Collection features Elmo, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, and my personal favorite, Grover. The hats & mitten are made from wool and lined with fleece for extra warmth. The hat features ear flaps and a neck tie.

Albertus Swanepoel Brings Spice to Stetson

Gorgeous Stetson
Even if you've already got an iconic, American-made Stetson hat, you probably don't have one like this.

Though the classic Stetsons will always be available and you may think there's nothing new (or at least nothing new that's not ridiculous) in the world of hats, Albertus Swanepoel's 2010 collection has rendered us speechless. These fabulous, spicy hats are masculine and creative, with lush materials and colorful, yet handsome plumage.

"It's a great honor to collaborate with a legacy brand such as Stetson. They are the Rolls Royce of hats to me in America and I'm thrilled to be associated with this brand," said Swanepoel. "This is also is a great opportunity for me to inject a more modern sensibility into their iconic designs."

And that he did. Inspired by everything from vintage cars to modern films and even art, he has created an alluring collection of attractive hats that appeal to ages 8 to 80. Above, for example is the "Pablo," a 100 percent fur felt pork pie dress hat which has coloring and an unusual bow placement influenced by the works of Pablo Picasso (retails for $200.00). Fewer than 50 of this hat will be made.

Select styles from the limited edition Albertus Swanepoel for Stetson collection are available now from Hartford York for pre-order, to ship in September, and will be available at Barneys stores nationwide. Check out the full 14-hat collection -- and their inspirations -- below.

Block Headwear Opens Flagship, Exclusive Designer Interview

Block Headwear
You probably saw Block Headwear first on Will Smith, and you may be used to passing their smart, masculine men's hats at Saks or specialty boutiques. Now, for the first time, after almost ten successful years of hatting, Block Headwear is finally opening their very own flagship store in Soho, NYC at 10 Prince Street (between Bowery and Elizabeth, above).

With the store set to open Friday, we chatted with Cuban-born Block Headwear designer and president Ciomi McCabe.

Luxist: So, how did the first Block Headwear store come about?

Ciomi McCabe: We just felt that now was the right time for this transition. I receive a lot of emails, daily, from customers who've bought one Block hat and want to know where to buy another one, or they lost it in the cab, that kind of thing. As the brand, we always take care of them, but it was really time for us to just open our own store. We'll also be launching online shopping in about a month.

L: Any plans to make hats for women?

CM: Right now, we're focusing on expanding the men's headwear collection and moving into more accessories. I just feel that guys right now are so fashionable, and we fulfill that New York City and LA vibe really well. And when you have a men's headwear collection, women wear it, too.

Missoni Crochet Sun Hat

missoni sun hatMy daughter has gotten me completely into hats for the summer. After a month of talking about a particular had she wanted, she finally got her white straw fedora hat with a black sequin ribbon. It looks adorable on her. But I know for certain that I could not pull off a white fedora as well as my 9 year old. Luckily, Rigel has covered a beautiful collection of fedoras by Robert Gellar that I love. Classic, stylish and made for travel – perfect! So, in addition to the versatility of fedoras, sun hats are also a great summer accessory. The Crochet Sunhat by Missoni ($159) is a colorful sunhat that may not look like your go-to fashionable accessory, but for some reason I keep getting drawn back to this hat. And it looks like many other people have been drawn to the Missoni hat as well because in the past few days since I've come across it, it has sold out. I love the color scheme and the large brim to block the sun. This would look great paired with a maxi dress and sandals for the days when you are strolling through the park or leisurely walking through the city.

Mühlbauer Hats - Vienna's Must-See Hat Shop

Filed under: Apparel, Luxury Travel & Hotels

Green riding hat adorned with pins and tassels
Without knowing it, you may have already seen a Mühlbauer hat. They've been worn by celebrities from Brad Pitt to Yoko Ono, and for good reason: they are gorgeous and remarkably well-made. Mühlbauer has 12 locations worldwide and can be purchased at Project No. 8 in Brooklyn and Fred Segal Hats in Santa Monica (that's it for the USA), but it all started in Vienna.

The company began in 1903 with a millinery and small hat shop in Floridsdorf, a suburb of Vienna. Today, fourth generation Mühlbauer, Klaus Mühlbauer, runs the company -- and he and his sister Marlies design all the collections, which are hand-made right in Vienna. The craftsmanship is of extraordinarily elite quality, making it a treat just to try on the hats. Also, if you can't afford to purchase one for yourself, you can pick up a classic Viennese hat pin for under 20 euros, which they make in charmingly quaint styles like fish and flowers with "Austria"-emblazoned ribbons.

The upcoming collection for Spring and Summer is called "Hello Josefine" in honor of the youngest addition to the Mühlbauer family, Klaus' daughter. We got a sneak peek at some of the upcoming styles and had a ball browsing around in the Vienna Mühlbauer location at Seilergasse 10 in the 1st district.

My visit to Vienna was sponsored by the Vienna Tourist Board and Cool Capitals, but the opinions expressed in the article are 100% my own.

Hats Made of Roadkill by Aspiring Fashion Designer

James Faulkner Roadkill Hats
Aspiring fashion designer James Faulkner will be debuting a collection of hats at a fashion show in May that's sure to turn heads, but not for all the usual reasons. The hats feature bold designs made of roadkill and consist mostly of the remains of foxes, magpies, rabbits, wood pigeons, pheasants, mallards, crows and peacocks -- the one shown in the picture above is red fox and ostrich (yuck) and there are 35 others. Faulkner has been making the roadkill hats since last year (May 2009) when he noticed a dead magpie and was inspired "to make something beautiful out of something gruesome." The fashion show will mark the end of an 18 week milliners course that Faulkner has been attending.

Custom Derby Hats to Benefit Retired Racehorses

For some the first Saturday in May is all about the horses, and for others, the Kentucky Derby is all about the hats. There are very few occasions left in today's society where woman can wear incredible millinery creations that really bring back another era. For those who love both the hats and the horses, or are just in a philanthropic mood, it is not too late to support retired racehorses and be a recipient of a fantastic custom made hat to wear to the big day.

Maggie Mae Designs™ has teamed up with Old Friends to create a series of one-of-a-kind Derby hats inspired by specific retired racehorses. Old Friends is an equine farm that specializes in the rescue and retirement of pensioned Thoroughbreds. Many in the horse world were devastated by the death of Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand in a Japanese slaughterhouse in 2002. In an effort to ensure that this never happens again the organization focuses on bringing at-risk racehorses, whose active careers are over to experience the dignified retirement they deserve. The only retirement farm to accept stallions, Old Friends is committed to providing a great retirement for these amazing athletes. The farm is open to the public and hosts tours daily.

The Fashion Statement: Hats On

The Spring/Summer 2010 Haute Couture shows got underway earlier this week in Paris and, by the looks of things so far, they could have easily been renamed "Hat Couture."

Jean Paul Gaultier framed his models' faces in feathers (shown above), Mexican sombreros and metallic halos reminiscent of South American icons. (We noticed the blue nail polish, too.)

Karl Lagerfeld, whose muse for Chanel Couture must be equal parts geisha, schoolgirl and American housewife circa late '50s/early '60s, placed sugary sweet bows in each girls' bouffant 'do.

On Aura Tout Vu went to the extreme by building a tiny city around one model's head, held in place by metal rods affixed to her belt.

Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy took the concept of "lid" to a whole new level with a millinery lineup that resembled screw-top caps, cylinders and mid-century lampshades. Some were white, stark and shiny while others were black, textured or featured veils.

Galliano was among the more conservative with equestrian top hats, stovepipes and high hats. The riding crops he placed in the hands of his models, expected in an equestrian theme, nevertheless added a dominatrix spirit.

The bride wore black veils at Franck Sorbier...and forks?! Sure enough, even a handful of forks was sculpted into a chapeau.

How to Choose the Most Flattering Hat

Adding a hat can make or break an ensemble, not to mention either flatter your face and highlight its best features or leave you looking decidedly unattractive. Finding the perfect hat for that perfect look your going for is much easier when you understand how to shop for your body and face shape.

Petite Frame Hats with a small brim, or no brim at all, usually compliment a petite frame by giving the illusion of height. Hats that are very large or have a wide brim can overpower a small person's appearance.

Tall Frame The taller the person the wider or larger the hat they can successfully wear. A hat with a brim that's too small can make a tall person look large and bulky.

The trick to finding a hat that compliments your face and head shape is balance. If your face is angular, go with a softer, rounder hat. If your face is full and round go with something more angular.

Square Face Hats with a full shape and a rounded crown will best flatter a square face.

Round Face Lengthen and balance a round face by wearing a hat with a structured, angled crown. Try one with an asymmetrical brim or wear a regular brim at a slight angle.

Oval Face People with an oval face can wear almost any hat style, just be sure it's proportionate to your frame and that the color suits your skin tone.

Heart Face Draw the eye upward by wearing a hat that's on the smaller side and sits up high on the head.

Other factors to consider...

Skin Tone Hats are worn close to your face so choose a color that flatters your skin tone.

Cheek bones A rule of thumb is that the crown of a hat should never be narrower than a person's cheek bones.

Comfort Perhaps the most important tip of all is to choose a hat that you feel comfortable and confident wearing, and that's appropriate for the occasion.

The Classicist: The $100,000 Panama Hat

Click above for a high-res image gallery.

Brent Black, renowned authority and preeminent purveyor of handwoven straw hats, is now offering the world's finest Montecristi Panama for $100,000. Known simply as "The Hat", Black calls the exquisite creation the most finely woven Montecristi Panama the world has ever known. Authentic Montecristi Panamas, the world's greatest, are made from extremely fine toquilla straw and woven only in Ecuador; a handful of master weavers produce the best of the best, which sell for tens of thousands of dollars apiece. The Hat was commissioned by Black from the king of the master weavers - Black calls him the best weaver in history - Simón Espinal, who lives in the village of Píle in Montecristi Canton. It took him five full months to complete.

After Espinal completed the weaving, five other artisans spent several more weeks preparing and finishing The Hat. An incredible amount of handwork goes into Montecristis; hence the price. You can see some of it in the gallery and a more detailed exposition here. The Hat has not been blocked into a style or sized yet, and is awaiting the purchaser's final instructions. Black offers dozens of different styles and bespoke finishes, some based on vintage patterns such as the dashing Optimo design, above. The Hat is so incredibly fine it weighs less than one ounce. "It is as thin as my stationery," Black tells The Classicist. "When I handle The Hat, I do not worry that it might fall to the floor if I drop it; I worry that it might float away."

While Espinal could theoretically create another one equal to The Hat's fineness, it's not a given that he could replicate the feat. "I have been obsessed with the very finest hats for more than 20 years," Black notes. "I have researched the finest hats woven during the 20th century. There is simply no hat that is comparable to this one." At first Black says he did not want to part with The Hat. However, "if someone were serious enough to pay $100,000 I think I'd have to give it up," he concedes. "I represent the interests of the artist as a gallery does. Simón would be pleased for me to sell it." If that's out of your range, don't worry - Black's best hats, other than this unique work of art, sell for $5,000 to $30,000. You can work your way up.

EXCLUSIVE PHOTO FEATURE: Essential Summer Style, Starring the Jaguar XK Convertible

Click above for high res image gallery and full credit info. Photographed by Adrianna Ault for Luxist.

Welcome to the first in a new series of exclusive photo features showcasing seasonal style essentials inspired by classic icons of elegance, sport and design, photographed with the most beautiful and coveted cars on the road. The emphasis is on luxury of course, but of the timeless variety as opposed to mere extravagance.

In our recent Classicist column on the 2010 Jaguar XK convertible coming out this August, we remarked on the sleek new cat's stylistic heritage dating back to 1948's XK120, as driven by the likes of Gary Cooper, Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable, as well as later models like the D-Type (or XK-SS) made famous by the great Steve McQueen. The first in our new series of exclusive shoots is inspired by them and stars the XK in homage to these stylish icons, both man and automotive (read all about the new XK here).

In particular, the influence of Gable (with his XK120 in 1954, top right) and McQueen (with his XK-SS, center right) can be seen in the summery style essentials we've assembled for this shoot. For the pastoral setting we drew on another classic Jaguar reference, an image of writer Truman Capote in a Jaguar XK-E, the model most closely aligned with the new XK, in the Hamptons in 1965 (bottom right).

In the spirit of summer we've chosen a classic combination of navy and white, popular as fashionable resort wear for a nearly a century and still going strong in the right circles. While navy blazers of the type shown here originated as part of English cricket club scenery and other elegant sporting occasions such as the Henley Royal Regatta, without gold buttons it needn't be unnecessarily nautical or costume-y.

The jacket shown here, in tropical weight wool with soft shoulders by the dashing Italian house of Etro, references its sporting antecedents with grosgrain tipping on the lapels, pockets and cuffs; however, since it is finished in the same color as the jacket the effect is a subtle one, while the slim cut updates the look with Italian flair. A cream linen camp shirt by Paul Stuart and white linen pants by Polo Ralph Lauren round out the rest of the ensemble.

As an alternative on cooler days or evenings - which we've certainly had plenty of this summer - we've also included a variation of the navy blazer by Brooks Brothers made of butter-soft goat suede with spiffy sporting details including a throat latch, stand-up collar, action back and pure Irish linen lining, which calls to mind the jacket worn by Gable above.

While a polka dot foulard silk scarf by the venerable British clothier Turnbull & Asser (shirtmaker to the Prince of Wales) provides not only another classic touch and added dose of sprezzatura, it also protects against the elements while piloting the XK with the top down at serious speeds. A hefty dose of McQueen meanwhile can be seen in the rakish cap, sunglasses and watch. For the feet and the road, a pair of pebble-sold leather driving moccasins by Tod's keep the haute Italian vibe going.

The checked linen driving cap - this model is made by Brooks Brothers - of the type favored by McQueen has no brim to collide with a car's headrest, and is infinitely more elegant than a baseball cap. Also on view: iconic Italian Persol sunglasses, in particular the model made famous by McQueen in The Thomas Crown Affair. Starring in this feature are a foldable version of McQueen's faves, as well as a couple of other killer Persol models; all are available at Ilori. Also included is a pair of shades by Paul Smith. The watch is a classic and vintage stainless steel Rolex GMT-Master II, available at Tourneau, of a similar design to the Rolex Submariner model favored by McQueen (and which recently fetched a record price at auction). Read on for details of the rest of the accessories after the jump.

Mizrahi's Bag Hats

Okay, not sure where to start on this one... I know designers make a living by pushing the limits of fashion and being the first to find and recognize new trends, but handbags on our heads? Isaac Mizrahi seems to really like the idea, as he has chosen to put more than a few of them on his models and in his fall/winter 2009 collection. The hats/bags themselves are pretty simple in basic leather, featuring nothing much more than rich fall colors and two stiff, skyreaching handles plus, of course, the large hole in the bottom where your head goes.

Add some interior zip pockets, though, and you could make for a super-convenient way to carry essentials like lip gloss and some spare cash around at a party.
