Christopher Guy Expands Into Harrods, Remodels in Las Vegas

Christopher Guy not long ago made the move to Beverly Hills, but more recent expansion plans have the British designer of fabulous furnishings enlarging his footprint in London. The 2,000-square-foot space area inside the Chelsea location will showcase the Christopher Guy Harrods Collection, hand-carved and hand-finished pieces influenced by Alice in Wonderland. Among the oversized chairs and ornate mirrors of the kind that have graced 'rooms' in Casino Royale and The Devil Wears Prada will also be examples of masculine- and feminine-themed lobbies and lavish dining rooms.

On this side of the Atlantic pond, Guy has been preparing his Las Vegas showroom at the Robert Allen | Beacon Hill space for a debut during the Las Vegas Market next month. Three windows displays will surround the 3,000-sq-ft space, and to enhance the connection many of the pieces on display will be upholstered with Robert Allen's trademark fabrics. If you're headed there, you'll find him in Building C at the World Market Center, August 2-6.

Is A World Cup Soccer Shirt Worth Millions?

geoff hurstWhen is a shirt worth millions? When it's the shirt worn by Sir Geoff Hurst in the 1966 World Cup final. The London Times says that the shirt has been put on sale for £2.3 million. That's quite a value jump, Hurst sold the shirt at an auction at Christie's in 2000 for £91,750 and it was later sold again. Now property developer Andrew Leslau is hoping to cash in on World Cup fever. Should the shirt sell for even close to this total it would blow away the previous record of £157,750 set in 2002 for the shirt worn by Pele in Brazil's 1970 World Cup triumph.

Leslau bought the shirt in 2008 and took out a £1 million insurance policy. The Times reports that he originally planned to display the shirt at Harrods before the South Africa World Cup but decided to sell it for £2 million plus VAT after receiving so many inquiries. It is now on display at the famed Harrods London store.

Many have raised their eyes at the price. Although the shirt does represent a shining moment for England and for soccer, it still seems unlikely that it will sell for this high price. The shirt is on display until June 14.

Harrods Sold To Qatar Royals' Holding Company

harrods london
Just last month we noted that Harrods owner Mohamed Al-Fayed had denied reports that the luxe landmark London department store was for sale. Now however in a stunning reversal Al-Fayed has sold the business to Qatar's royal family for more than £1.5 billion, or about $2.2 billion, and announced his retirement, the London Times reports. Harrods, the largest and one of the most luxurious stores in the world, holds royal warrants from the likes of the Queen, the Queen Mother and the Prince of Wales.

The bid from the Qatar Holding company was accepted because they would "maintain the traditions of Harrods", Ken Costa, chairman of Lazard International, the investment bank advising the family trust on the deal, told the paper. "After 25 years as chairman of Harrods, Mohamed al-Fayed has decided to retire and to spend more time with his children and grandchildren," Costa notes, adding, Fayed "wished to ensure that the legacy and traditions that he has built up in Harrods would be continued". Last year Harrods won a Readers' Choice Luxist award for Best Department Store.

"We do not comment on rumours or speculation," Harrods' director of public affairs told Retail Week. "That is neither to confirm nor deny that any discussions have taken place to sell the store. However, for some time we have been aware of gossip circulating over a possible sale, and we took the decision to reassure staff this morning that this was not the case via a store-wide announcement. We are happy to confirm that Harrods is not for sale and is not being sold." Estimates put the famed store's worth at over £2 billion should Al-Fayed change his mind.

The Harrods Food Hall in London has been nominated for a Luxist Award in the Best Gourmet Grocer/Food Hall category. Harrods is known worldwide for its opulence and grandeur, and the Food Halls are no exception. Harrods has been around since 1834, founded by Charles Henry Harrod and originally operating in a single room selling a mix of grocery goods, perfumes, and stationary items.

Today, it's grown to boast a series of food halls (a luxury food court of sorts) that each specialize in something different but combine to make for a total experience. Many visitors are struck by the sheer volume and selection of international goods, all presented in breathtakingly beautiful displays, counters, and luxury eateries. Harrods is known for offering everything from fine chocolates to lavish cuts of meat and seafood, cheeses, baked goods, and even fine wines, with tasting events scheduled in-house. There are also restaurants serving up gourmet meals, sandwiches, and snacks so you can taste before you buy (or simply enjoy a good meal).

The holidays are an especially grand time of year for Harrods, with many finding great gifts in their selection of food hampers. Prices vary but this year their most divine option is called The Supreme (£1,250) and includes the best of the Food Halls offerings from main courses through dessert, wine and spirits not to be left out.

Many of its products are available for purchase on its website, from pate, biscuits and jam to chocolate, coffee and an impressive selection of teas.

Vote now for what you believe is the best of breed in Gourmet Foods. Readers' Choice Awards for Food will be announced on November 30th.

A Royal Billiards Table For Sale At Harrods

pool table
This might be one of the most beautiful billiard tables ever created. The black walnut billiard table was commissioned for Queen Victoria's Jubileee Exhibition in Manchester in 1887 and created by Orne & Sons Ltd. The cushion friezes are decorated with ribbons of quotations from Shakespeare, Tennyson, Scott and Byron embellished with over fifty species of wild flowers and native British birds. Beneath the friezes are two long and six short panels depicting numerous countries. Between the panels and above each leg are carved portraits including William of Normandy, Henry I, Henry II, Henry III, Edward I, Edward II, Edward II, Edward IV, Elizabeth of York, James I and Charles I.

The matching cupboard is shaped like a door carved with seven panels. The upper four coats of arms show Victoria during the most important stages in her reign. The central horizontal section features Victoria and Albert beside Windsor Castle and the lower section depicts the royal residences of Holyrood and Caernavon. The second section slides open to expose a game with stars and colored counters, which can be rotated to form a scoreboard. The set is at Harrod's for £1 million.

Harrods Gets Into The Gold Bar Business

gold With gold cresting over $1,000 an ounce many gold bugs are patting themselves on the back. Now for those who want to get in on the action there is a new way to buy gold. Buying gold bars isn't something you'd think of doing in a department store but Harrods is betting that some will want to buy their bullion in the same place that they buy their gold earrings.

The London Times reports that the Knightsbridge department store has begun selling bars of pure Swiss gold bullion out of a miniature vault. Gold lovers can also buy gold coins from around the world. The new gold sales are part of a collaboration with the Swiss refiner Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux. Customers can also buy online and then collect their purchase in person. A full-sized gold bar would cost about $466,000 and those who don't have a place to store it can also arrange for a safe deposit box, vault or international service courier.

Fly Air Harrods to Your Superyacht

Apparently among the many services offered by Harrods of London, the world's most exclusive department store, is a private aviation program. Air Harrods has now partnered with UK-based Watkins Yacht Management to provide air and concierge support via helicopter and corporate jet to the firm's superyacht clientele. Watkins, which has sister companies In Asia, Dubai and the U.S., provides yacht management services, sources yachts for charter, assists new owners, provides brokerage for sales and purchase, and offers a "discreet acquisition service with access to a number of high profile owners."

The two firms will now provide a "streamlined luxury travel experience" for yacht-goers. Transfers to the yachts will now start at the owner, charterer or guest's own front door and will seamlessly incorporate limousines, flights and/or helicopter transfers to and from the vessels, overseen by Harrods' highly-trained staff with all the perks one would expect of such a hallowed name.
