Water Mill, Estate of the Day

The Hamptons are full of lavish real estate and so it takes a lot to turn heads but this one in Water Mill, New York definitely does. Newsday reported last year that the home belongs to real estate principal and chef Andrew Borrok. According to that article, the kitchen alone with a a prep-kitchen, walk-in refrigeration, bakery and a finishing kitchen upstairs cost $3 million.

The home dazzles from the get-go with a a foyer that has a double staircase in cast bronze with silver and gold-leaf details and crowned by an early 19th-century, stained glass skylight. The home was built in 2005 and has a custom-designed copper roof and eight bedrooms. The four-acre property fronts has a heated gunite pool with a waterfall edge as well as a tennis court, a koi pond and a four-car garage. Property records show that he bought the property in 2003 for $3,687,500. It is listed at $58.5 million with Harald Grant of Sotheby's Realty.

Seven Maples, Estate of the Day

Today's home on 1.9 acres in New York's Southampton Village began life as a gatehouse to The Dolphins, one of the biggest estates in the area. Newsday's Real LI reported that the house was expanded into a summer home when the land was subdivided about 40 years ago and is now a comfortable year-round home with easy access to the ocean and to the Meadow Club. Curbed Hamptons says that the home's owner was once the chief executive of Deutsche Bank, but is "now chairman of a German telecommunications company." The 2,900-square-foot "cottage" has five bedrooms and the Architectural Review Board has also approved plans for a 10,000-square-foot house, pool and tennis court. It is listed for $10.4 million with Saunders & Associates.

Joseph Gregory Relists In The Hamptons

When it comes to real estate if at first you don't succeed, list, list again. The Wall Street Journal reports that former Lehman Brothers president Joe Gregory has relisted his beautiful Bridgehampton mansion at a new lower price. This was our estate of the day back in September 2008 when it was listed for $32.5 million. We watched the price tumble to $27.9 million before it was taken off the market. Now it's back with a new broker, Beate Moore of Sotheby's International Realty, new listing pictures and a price of $25 million.

Gregory bought the 9,500-square-foot oceanfront home for $19 million in January 2007. The Hamptons home was a new eight-bedroom spec house which was built on 2.5 acres in Bridgehampton, New York. Gregory and his wife Niki spent several million dollars in renovations but reportedly only spent less than a month total in the home before it was first listed. The home includes two master suites and a a second floor deck, The property has a pool area surrounded by plush green lawns and a sandy path leading across the dunes and to the ocean.

James Brady in East Hampton, Estate of the Day

Today's home in East Hampton, New York was originally built in 1952 and purchased in 1978 by writer and novelist James Brady. The traditional white home is one of the simpler homes on the posh address of Further Lane (one of his books "Further Lane: A Novel" is a dishy murder mystery set in the area).

The six-bedroom home charms with built-in bookcases, an eat-in kitchen overlooking the backyard, a large front dining room, a formal living room with a wood-burning fireplace and a cozy family room with a brick fireplace and sliding doors leading to the slate patio/deck and pool area. The home has two separate master bedroom suites, one on each floor, and the one on the second floor has a deck. It's likely that the new owner will probably want to renovate, ripping out Formica countertops and wood paneling but hopefully they won't take too much of the old Hamptons style away. This classic home is listed at $4.9 million.

Historic Hamptons Site Listed For $81.5 Million

A massive swath of land in Southampton, New York just hit the market for $81.5 million. The Olde Towne Association has unveiled its completed 50-acre historic site. The site includes the largest mature tree move in history and offers seven building parcels for sale for a total $81.5 million, the largest land offering in Southampton Village. The four acre individual lots are available from $10.5 to $13.5 million dollars, some with second floor pond and ocean views.

Andrew Saunders of Saunders & Associates
is the listing real estate broker and calls the area one of the "most rarified settings in the Hamptons."

The property is the site of the first English settlement in New York and developer Bob Gianos, founder and president of East End Properties LLC is only the seventh titled owner in 370 years. He has created a total of 10 buildable parcels with a central tree-lined green area of open space, a nature preserve at one end and open meadows at the other, a total of over a third of the space of the entire property. A separate set of roads enter from the rear of each parcel for construction and service. Gianos donated 5.5 acres to the adjacent Fowler Nature Preserve and partnered with the Community Preservation Fund to create a separate park across the street.

Remaining Madoff Homes Already Discounted

Bernie Madoff's last home may have sold strong, but it looks like the momentum is fading. His home in the Hamptons beat the listing price and ultimately moved for more than $9.4 million. Unfortunately for his victims, interest in his Manhattan penthouse and Palm Beach estate isn't as strong. The prices for both have been cut, as the Ponzi schemer moves from news to history. Both homes have been on the market for only two months.

The Manhattan home, on the Upper East Side, offers 4,000 square feet which the broker, Sotheby's International Realty, says is "perched atop a distinguished white-glove prewar cooperative." Originally offered at $9.9 million, the asking price has been slashed by $1 million. So, if you're looking for some new digs in the city, this should be perched atop your list. A 10 percent price drop after only two months in the game means that you could probably work the price down a little bit further. If you were a Madoff investor, think of it as recouping some of what was so wrongly taken from you.

The situation in Palm Beach, Florida isn't much better. The discount is only 7 percent, with the price plunging from $8.49 million to $7.9 million according to the Corcoran Group, which is handling the sale. This home is billed as "a return to classic Florida island living ... when Palm Beach was a less manicured tropical paradise." What does that mean? Does classical Florida island living have anything to do with defrauding the neighbors?

Madoff, now a resident of Butner, North Carolina, believed that the Manhattan apartment was worth only $7 million. He pegged the Palm Beach residence at $11 million.

When both properties move, the proceeds will go to Madoff's victims. Of the $65 million, roughly, that he took, $1.4 billion is said to have been recovered. Even when compared to the investor losses identified, $21.2 billion, it's but a drop in the bucket. The auction scheduled for Saturday may help a little bit, with Bernie's Mets jacket and Ruth's golf clubs going under the gavel.

Georgica Manor, Estate of the Day

georgica manor
Today's home in East Hampton, New York is build as a designer's home but I haven't been able to find out the identity of the designer. The 14,000 square foot stone and stucco manor house on 1.3 acres overlooking a 17-acre meadow preserve minutes from the ocean. The home is beautifully turned out with a dramatic double-height entry hall with some sort of sculpture, a living room with coffered ceiling, formal dining room, large kitchen/family room, library and the coolest room in the house, a circular domed office. The master suite has a study and twin baths and there are four additional guest bedroom suites. The finished basement has a playroom, wine storage, gym and two staff bedrooms. The property includes a heated pool, stone pool house and a garage. The lovely designer furnishings are available separately. It's listed at $17 million.

Hamptons Homes Hot Again

If you were waiting for the bottom, it looks like you just missed it. Home prices in the Hamptons are on their way back up, rising 4.7 percent in the third quarter. Houses priced in the range of $2 million to $5 million led the charge. In fact, the number of properties clocking in at more than $2 million (including the former getaway of Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff, which went for $9.41 million) jumped 44 percent -- 46 sales occurred from July through September this year. And, the median price for this part of Long Island increased from $860,000 last year to $900,000 this year.

The action appears to have been driven by buyers who'd normally look for something close to $10 million ... who began to see what they could get for a mere 20 percent of that price. When opportunity knocks ... you know the drill.

Even with this bit of good news, the number of homes sold last quarter fell 2.3 percent, with those fetching less than $500,000 posting the largest decline (22 percent). So, all isn't rosy in the land of the wealthy, unless of course, you're still wealthy.

The Southampton Steal, Estate of the Day

As I mentioned earlier, the thing that makes this Hamptons house interesting is that the owner embezzled her way into it. Catesby Kilmer stole $2.25 million from her employer Howard Gittes and just received a three- to nine-year-sentence for her crimes. Talk about a motivated seller. The Southampton, New York estate includes a four-bedroom vintage farmhouse,  two-bedroom guest cottage and a pool. The home is listed at $2.5 million and proceeds go to making restitution so you could probably get yourself a deal on the furniture too.

Normandie, Estate of the Day

Today's estate isn't a waterfront Hamptons blockbuster but it does occupy a spot on scenic Lily Pond Lane in East Hampton, New York. Normandie was designed in 1914 by architect John Custis Lawrence. The five-bedroom main house has four fireplaces and staff quarters all on one story. There is also a two-bedroom guest house and a large pool house with two changing rooms and two baths. The entire estate is 2.8 acres.  The interior is in need of a little renovation it looks like it hasn't been updated in many years. The home is listed at $24 million. After the jump, oh look, it's your grandmother's kitchen.

Lasata, Estate of the Day

Our estate of the day comes from a tip in the NY Post's Gimme Shelter section. Lasata, which is located in East Hampton, New York was one of the summer homes of the Bouvier family in the 1920s. The stately home was designed by architect Arthur Jackson and built in 1917. Its name means place of peace and the gorgeous home sits on over six acres. The home has six bedrooms and there is a pool. Bridgehampton Estate, Estate of the Day

I chose this home for the estate of the day as much for the interior as the exterior. When the listing says traditional they aren't kidding. This shingled home in Bridgehampton, New York is an absolutely seamless monument to classic style from the gardens which feature elegantly clipped shrubbery to every detail of the interior including tufted floral ottomans, oil paintings of hunting dogs and stuffed owls mounted with wings open. The home includes a formal dining room, library, expansive gourmet kitchen with a large island and six bedrooms including a master suite with his and hers baths. There is also a three-car garage, pool, pool house and tennis court. The estate is listed at $12 million.

Views and interior shots after the jump.

Norman Jaffe Design, Estate of the Day

This striking house in the Hamptons might not be for everyone. The angled design from Norman Jaffe is beautiful but if you have a hankering to decorate your house in chintz and Chippendale this is not the place for you. The house is a series of wedges with tilted roofs that allow for massive expanses of glass walls. Details of the home include a copper roof, stone and cedar paneling and a wedge-shaped pool with waterfall and whirlpool spa. The house sits on 2.5 acres a block away from the ocean and overlooks a private pond. It is listed at $12.5 million. Dated or delicious? I'm not quite certain, check out more pictures after the jump and let me know your take on this unique home.
