Cara Couture's Pretty Headbands, With Crystals and PearlsI wrote about headbands once before on Luxist, and didn't expect to again. But then I found these pretty accessories at Henri Bendel and thought they'd be nice for a holiday or New Year's fete. Cara Couture's Satin & Crystal Headbands feature offset crystal and pearl adornments and come in four colors: gray, $88; red, $78; black, $88; and purple, $118.

Elvis Presley Hair Auctioned Off for $15,000

Elvis Presley's Hair
Nasty looking, isn't it? No offense to the King.

Item number 66 at Chicago auction house Leslie Hindman Auctioneers last Sunday was none other than "A Large Quantity of Elvis Presley's Hair." It went for $15,000 -- and Leslie Hindman told The Chicago Tribune she had expected it to go for a "bit more." The hair is allegedly from when Elvis had his locks shorn to enter the military in 1958.

That's some old hair.

Other items at the auction included Elvis Presley clothes, dolls, scarves and ladies' handkerchiefs which may contain some Elvis perspiration. The top seller was an "EP" monogrammed white cotton shirt which went to superfan John Urso for $52,000. "It's worth every penny," he told The Chicago Tribune.

The King of Rock and Roll may be dead (maybe), but his DNA still commands a pretty penny. Imagine if he were still alive -- he could support himself and several charities on haircuts and sweating on stuff alone.

Hair Extensions - Everything You Want to Know But Feel Lame Asking

Filed under: Celebrity Shopping, Cosmetics and Fragrance

Annie Scott at DEX New YorkOne accessory that almost no celeb or celebutante is seen without these days is hair extensions. Even if you don't think they have them, they probably do -- good extensions are hard to spot, and many stars with just shoulder-length hair are sporting them to boost body.

Everyone knows long hair is "in" for the upcoming fall and holiday seasons, and if the Fashion Week runways are any indication, Spring 2010 will be no exception. Why spend money on a fancy new handbag when your hair still looks like a substitute teacher's? While hair extensions are definitely a luxury item, they have become very easily accessible to the mass market -- my Mom has them -- but with all the horror stories (they might look fake, some are afraid they'll "rot," and what is that hair made of, anyway?), it can be a daunting procedure to consider. It's expensive, and when it comes to your hair -- your constant companion and an immediate indicator of your health and personal hygiene -- you really, really don't want it to go wrong.

In the interest of checking out the process and telling the tale, I visited DEX New York where adept stylist Naomi Porto put 30 Georgie Xtensions (a Brooklyn based company he loves to work with -- they can get him colors and whatever curl he requests overnight, compared with weeks of waiting for the larger companies) extension bundles in my hair, then snipped them to blend them into my existing hair, lengthening it by ... a lot. Then he did my makeup, which was a treat; prior to our appointment, he was doing Seal's makeup (both of us with DEX New York Mineral Makeup, of course. Different colors.). Check out the photos (by Damon Hall Booth and Naomi Porto) for the dramatic difference and a lot more information.

If you still have any burning questions about hair extensions when you're finished, go ahead and ask them in the comments section! I'll keep an eye out and post answers. For the record, I'm currently out of town and not one person I've met has expressed doubts about the origin of my long locks. And I'm with six very chatty women.

Sally Hershberger Intros Luxe Layers Hair Stying Gel

Sally Hershberger Intros Luxe Layers Hair Stying GelCelebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger invited a few lucky bloggers to her downtown NYC salon on September 3 for the unveiling of her newest hairstyling product, Luxe Layers Protective Blow Out Gel, available exclusively on HSN. I was there to see Hershberger in action, which was a real treat, because cuts with her run $800, so I likely won't be a client anytime soon. Note that this doesn't mean I wasn't secretly hoping she'd pull me from the audience for an impromptu fix of my style. Alas, that didn't happen, but Hershberger did demonstrate the product on a few models. The video of the event is on Hershberger's homepage now.

Luxe Layers is easy just to use -- just a few pumps, rubbed in your hands, then spread throughout your hair, provides thermal protection/prevents against heat damage, seals against color wash-out, protects against the sun and environmental aggressors, and blocks humidity and static to minimize frizz and flyaways. It's made from a proprietary complex of cationic polymers, natural cellulose, and amino acids, is blended with silk and cashmere extracts for internal strength with superior smoothing and long-lasting styling effect. It's alcohol-free, not tested on animals, does not contain animal products or drying solvents, and is non-silicone based, so it won't weigh down even fine hair. Hershberger says it also helps blow-outs last longer.

Luxe layers ($18.00/5 oz.) is just one of Hershberger's full line of products, all reasonably priced. You can get her Luxe Layers Trio on HSN, or just try my new favorite, Genius Spray Wax.

Seeing the product demonstrated live was much better than Hershberger just telling us about it. You can catch Hershberger on HSN doing just this on September 8 at 1 a.m., 8 a.m., and 7 p.m., and on September 9 at 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. To see her demonstrate other products, check out her styling tips videos.

The shampoo, conditioner and styling products are light and help hair achieve more movement and body. A video about the line is after the jump.

Mischa Barton Designs Pricey Headbands

Would you pay between $50 and $200 for a headband? Mischa Barton is betting (hoping?) you will! The actress has teamed up with handbag and jewelry designer Stacey Lapidus to launch a collection of 10 headbands in varying styles. Now, here at Luxist we love the expensive, exquisite accessory. But I feel compelled to question whether a headband -- at least those in this collection -- could possibly be worth this high of an asking price. You decide. See the gallery for a few styles.

The Secret of Catherine Zeta-Jones's Hair

Filed under: Celebrity Shopping, Cosmetics and Fragrance

Catherine Zeta-Jones has gorgeous hair and now we know the reason why. The Daily Mail reveals that she goes to Hari's salon in South Kensington to indulge in a unique treatment. She undergoes a treatment that costs £200 and involves washing her hair with a truffle-based shampoo. Her hair is then smeared with beluga caviar flown in fresh from Iran. The fatty acids in the fish eggs are said to give her hair its famed shine.

Britney's Hair on eBay

You've probably heard by now that Britney Spears shaved her head. Whether you believe that she did it because of a nervous breakdown (according to the gossip columns) or for "therapeutic reasons" (according to her manager), is entirely your choice. Regardless of why she did it, the hair is gone - unless you're willing to pay for it. The owners of the hair salon where Britney lost her locks collected the hair and have put it up for sale on eBay. The bid is up to $1,000,100 so far, and there are two days left to go.

Dominique Duval Rivers of Gold Headband

Anyone following fashionistas or the celebrity gossip sites will probably have noticed that headbands are quite popular at the moment. Rather than looking too girlish, the trend is to give a fresh, simple look by keeping hair just back from the face. At least, the overall look should be simple. The headband itself doesn't have to be. Dominique Duval's Rivers of Gold Headband, imported from Paris, is made of a string of handblown glass beads that are streaked with bright copper. It is a far cry from any of the brightly colored fabric bands you may have worn as a child. It ties with a velvety ribbon and, despite the intricacies of the beading, shouldn't get caught in your hair. Price: $415.

Wigs for Dogs

Many celebrities get hair extensions to improve on what nature gave them, if they don't opt to wear a complete wig from time to time. Ruth Regina, an 8th generation wigmaker with extensive experience working with celebrities, decided that the latest celebrity accessory might benefit from some extra hair, too. In addition to her work on human wigs, she also designs wigs for dogs. Is it really that much of a stretch from dressing dogs up in little outfits and tiaras? Perhaps not. Regina describes them as being "just little people in fur coats."

The pieces can cost hundreds of dollars, depending on the size and style desired. Styles include: "Yappy Hour," a cascade of curls; "Peek a Bow Wow," reminiscent of Veronica Lake; and "Rover R-r-r-rug," which give an appearance similar to bangs. All can be dyed to any color you (or your pooch) desire.

Posh's Pricy Hair Extensions

What on Earth do you do when you are in Germany, trying to support your husband's soccer team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and you need to get your hair extensions redone? If you're Victoria Beckham, first you'll call your stylist at home in England, then you'll hop a $600 flight back and spend almost $3000 and 5 hours getting them put in. Apparently, Posh spends the $3K every three months getting her extensions redone, but she couldn't wait this time because some photographers noticed that she was developing a bald spot where the weave was pulling out her natural hair.

If only the solution to baldness was a plane flight and $3000 away for everyone.
