Win With Words On Wine

Calling all poets and wine lovers. To celebrate the 151st anniversary of Gundlach Bundschu winery (March 12, 1858, is the date that Jacob Gundlach signed the deed to the estate) the winery is holding a virtual poetry slam on March 12, 2009. Each entry has to be 151 words or less and can be poetry, an essay, song lyrics, whatever you like as long as it touches on the theme of wine.

What do you win for your efforts? The winery will select a handful of winners who will have their work published on their website and in print. Because wine regulations vary by state the winery is a bit curtailed in their ability to award wine prizes, but they will do their best to provide additional awards. The web page has complete details. Entries will be accepted online only, from 12:00am to 11:59pm, Pacific time on March 12, 2009.

Gundlach Bundschu Winery Celebrates 150th Anniversary With A Play

Winemakers celebrate their history in a variety of ways but Gundlach Bundschu, California's oldest family-owned and -operated winery, has chosen a rather dramatic method to celebrate their sesquicentennial (150 years) throughout 2008. The winery will be putting on an original, one-man play, Towle's Hill, at the winery and in several cities around the U.S.

The Bundschu family collaborated with The Marsh, an award-winning San Francisco theater company, to create Towle's Hill. Told from the perspective of fourth-generation Rhinefarm steward Towle Bundschu, Towle's Hill chronicles the history of Gundlach Bundschu, while offering insight into the dynamics of family businesses, the complexities of father-son relationships and the desire to create something meaningful from a lifetime of work. Towle's Hill debuted on May 7, 2008 in San Francisco and will tour the country with performances in eight additional cities (Houston, Austin, Kansas City, Chicago, New York, Charlotte, New Orleans and Los Angeles) during June. The play tour will culminate in a Sonoma performance in September that benefits the Boys and Girls Club Valley of the Moon. 2002 Gundlach Bundschu Vintage Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

I'm a sucker for a pretty label and this one isn't just pretty, it's a work of art, the Salvador Dali painting, "The Ghost of
Vermeer of Delft Which Can Be Used as a Table." The wine is the 2002 Vintage Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from Gundlach Bundschu Winery in Sonoma. It is the 22nd vintage of this limited estate bottling of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, each with a unique label. This wine is part of the Millennium Series of labels celebrates the historic role of wine in culture by featuring a work of art from each millennium of human history. The series began with the 1997 vintage, which celebrated wine's discovery. The 2002 label, named "Inspiration," represents the second millennium AD. Permission to use the image was granted to Gundlach Bundschu by The Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. The wine has black plum and black currant flavors. There are just 138 cases of the wine available. The winery is selling six bottles in a signature wooden box for $450.
