Maine Magazine Launches 2011 Guide Books

Filed under: Decor, Dining, Luxury Travel & Hotels, Art, Books

Maine magazine, the stylish bible of "more than just lobsters and lighthouses", has debuted its 2011 guides to the best the Pine Tree State has to offer. This year in addition to the Eat Maine edition launched last year they've added Art Maine and Home Maine versions with help from sister publication Maine Home + Design. Indispensable for both visitors and natives alike, the pocket-sized booklets act as a Baedeker to the best in dining, decor and the arts around the beautiful northern and easternmost bit of New England. Of course they do list the best lobster rolls in the Eat edition but that's just the tip of the icecap. The guides are priced at $5.95 and come free to subscribers; alternatively they can be found at many Portland businesses and are also available from the magazine directly.

Wristwatch Annual 2010 Catalog Better Than Ever

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Books

The aptly named "Wrist Watch Annual" line of yearly guides to the world of watches has now been released for 2010. Somewhere between a book and a magazine, this uber resource is the finest print publication that you can get when it comes to spending time in the world of watches. The guide covers many brands, each with a survey of their new and popular models - complete with images, movements, specs, and prices! The latter of which are hard to find.

The book also features a new pictorial glossary of watch terms both common and obscure. It is now possible for you, with this brief eduction, to know what I am talking about half the time in my many watch-centric articles. I personally give credit to a previous version of Wrist Watch Annual back in 2002, for really acting as the catalyst to my intense passion for watches that I have today. It is a powerfully enjoyable publication, and beautifully made. Price is just $35 direct from the publisher website here. 456 pages of horological enjoyment with 1,400 full color images. I don't say this too often, but the books are almost drool worthy if you are anything like me. After you click over to the publisher's page, you have access to more information as well as screen shots of Wristwatch Annual 2010's select pages. A must have for all new and existing watch lovers out there.

NYT Talks Diamonds

Since jewelry is always a hot choice for the holidays, it's important to stop for a moment and take into consideration what it is you are purchasing. Those special prices can look tempting, but it's worth putting in a bit of extra effort (and perhaps a bit of extra cash) to ensure you get something worthwhile. It will pay off in the long run when you have a lovely diamond that will probably increase in value. In fact, that is just the point that the New York Times makes with their tips on the ABCs of diamond-buying. The first thing to do is forget the setting and look at the quality of the stone. Color, clarity and cut are paramount. Once you've got a good one, you can think about the setting and the jeweler. But don't let yourself be blinded by a special sale price unless you're blinded by the brilliance of the diamond you're buying, too.

Uberreview Coolest Gadgets Guide

While only a few of the items are of note for their luxe status, it's a pretty good list none-the-less. Uberreview.com has posted a list of the "11 Coolest Toys on the Planet." Among them are a temporary tattoo gun, a remote-control flying Superman, and my favorite, Frigits. It's like Marble Madness for your fridge. The upper end of the price spectrum is reserved for Laser Bowling, a home arcade machine, and a pretty cool DNA kit (complete with hilarious caption), but The Blue Car appears nowhere on it.. I'll trade you three super high end scrabble pieces for some Frigits. Seriously.

Their panel of reviewers includes trusted anonymous sources as well as some famous names, like Stella McCartney and Anna Richardson, and every piece is written with a bit of humor and in a voice that you could easily hear checking into a hotel as the anonymous "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" with their lover. There are also books available, for Europe and UK/Ireland, if you want to take the guide along as you travel.
