The Fashion Statement: Italians Do It Better?

Milan is delivering the most exciting fashion weeks in years. Fashion critics have been giving rave reviews to Italian designers saying that, for the most part, the collections have been inspired.

One of the more subdued shows of the week, Giorgio Armani (pictured above), presented a spring/summer 2011 collection of entirely navy blue and black--not exactly the most spring/summery of colors. No matter, the fitted double breasted blazers, one-shouldered gowns and skirts over sheer leggings were stunning. Even more interesting: His models were turned out in turbans and veils.

Speed, Style & Beauty: $760,000 Aquariva by Gucci

Filed under: Apparel, Yachts & Sailing

Two iconic Italian brands – famed fashion label Gucci and Riva, the chic motorboat maker that epitomizes Dolce Vita style – have teamed up on a wicked new speedboat for the style-conscious set. The Aquariva By Gucci (above), produced along with Officina Italiana Design, will be available by special order in 2011 starting at $760,000. The boat was designed by Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini as part of the famed label's upcoming 90th anniversary celebrations. The boat's fiberglass hull and detailing are painted in Gucci's custom glossy white, offset with varnished mahogany in the cockpit and decks. The seats and sundeck are upholstered in waterproof Gucci print fabric with the fashion house's signature red and green stripe detailing. Gianni has also designed a number of Riva by Gucci his-and-hers accessories, including bags and shoes, to go along with the craft, which is powered by two 380 hp Yanmar engines for a maximum speed of 41 knots and a 150-mile range at cruising speed.

Gucci U-Play Women's Watches

It feels like a while since Gucci released a new woman's line. The brand does really well with their timepieces for women, and with some very good classic designs, I can see why. For some reason I feel like they opened the doors for a brand like Chanel to come in and be as popular as they are.

The new U-Play collection comes in two sizes (27mm wide and 35mm wide) in steel. The dial is a play on the Gucci "G," with two of them being flipped and mirrored. The look is designer in feel, and has the fun feel of a sketched drawing. The overall look of the watch is youthful and sophisticated, with an avant garde twist. The watch is meant to be quite interactive for the wearer. Both versions of the watch has a case that can be removed from the strap and bezel housing, and switched into a new watch. There are a series of different colors and materials available. I haven't played with it yet, but the idea is interesting. The case itself is in steel, and contains a Swiss quartz movement. Aside from that details are scant. Look for these U-Play model timepieces for women from Gucci soon.

'Sin City' Director's Sexy Gucci Commecial Unveiled [video]

Frank Miller, co-director of the super-stylish, ultra-violent 2005 film Sin City based on his neo-noir comics series of the same name, has produced a commercial for Gucci's new Guilty fragrance. The latest in a line of fashion label film collaborations, it comes on the heels of Martin Scorsese's video for Chanel's new men's fragrance that we wrote about the other day. The Gucci spot, set to debut Sept. 12, stars Evan Rachel Wood as a femme fatale with a passion for fast cars and handsome fellows, and a soundtrack by Friendly Fires. Done in the same black-and-white with slashes of color style as SIn City, the spot aims to position Guilty as the "scent of defiance". The perfume comes in a gold-colored container featuring Gucci's signature interlocking G's motif.

Gucci Special Edition Heritage Aviators

Italian luxury label Gucci has come out with a cool new collection of "heritage" aviator sunglasses harking back to the brand's heyday of louche glamour in the '60s and '70s. The three new models – 1627/S, 1622/S, and 3108/S – all feature the vintage red and green Gucci stripe and "G" logo on both temples and complete the theme with a special edition leather case and carrying pouch. The case has a wide signature stripe while the pouch has a matching strap. Available in multiple classic color combinations, the best are the basic black versions which have the classic red and green stripe on them. The Gucci 1627/S is a well fitting unisex aviator, the 622/S is a slightly larger unisex cross between an aviator and a wrap, and the 3108/S is a more feminine style. They're now available for $174, $180 and $170 respectively from haute online eyewear boutique Eyegoodies.

Gucci Leather 1973 Small Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

1973 was a good year. The Gucci Leather 1973 Small Shoulder Bag is smart and chic resurrection.

Available in Black or Olive (shown), this little 7"W X 5"H X 2¼"D bag is a perfect companion for shopping, dining or a night on the town. The oval GG logo and chain in goldtone hardware keep it dressy -- don't wear anything too casual with it, or people may think that it's from 1973.

Not that there's anything wrong with 1973 ... Dark Side of the Moon was released, the first cell phone call was made, and "Piano Man" played on the radio in November. Still, when you shell out for a brand new Gucci bag, you don't want it to look like a hand-me-down. Wearing a retro look can be tough to pull off -- this bag is only for the qualified.

With the right outfit and the right attitude? It's divine.

The Gucci Leather 1973 Small Shoulder Bag is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $760.00.

Gucci Catherine Guccissima Medium Dome SatchelThe Gucci Catherine Guccissima Medium Dome Satchel is a gorgeous bag with a classic look that will last you for years.

If you're tired of bags with logos all over them, you probably haven't seen this chocolaty brown logo-embossed leather satchel, which brings sophistication and subtlety to the concept. This smart Italian leather bag is 16½"W X 11"H X 6"D, perfect for work, moms, and women with a lot of accessories they can't live without.

The distressed leather trim and top handles and metal feet ensure that this bag will age with elegance. Whether you pair it with blue jeans or a business suit, your daughter or granddaughter is likely to pull this out of your closet years from now, rub her hands over the texture and borrow it permanently.

The Gucci Catherine Guccissima Medium Dome Satchel is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,350.00.

Gucci Heritage Medium Bag, Handbag of the Day

Gucci Heritage Medium BagThe Gucci Heritage Medium Bag is kicky carry-all for ladies who aren't afraid of a little color.

We just love the retro military-esque stripes on the soft, buttery Italian leather of this charming bag. At 17"W X 10"H X 5"D, it's surprisingly roomy despite its demure shape. The silvertone buckle at the front is just decoration; the flap-top closes with a snap. The buckles on the sides, though, are real, and can be adjusted to accommodate your heavier-load days.

While not especially dressy, this bag makes a perfect companion for the local golf or country club with its preppy air, as well as shopping days in your jeans and weekend visits to the office. Pair it with some bright red heels for an adorable matchy-matchy effect. If you have a pair of red and green heels, keep them in the closet; that would be out of control.

The Gucci Heritage Medium Bag is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,850.00.

The Fashion Statement: Dream Hommes

Filed under: Apparel, Men's Style, The Fashion Statement

Menswear changes at a snail's pace. New cuts are generally so imperceptible year in and year out that they usually sneak up on the average American male. One day a gentleman dons his everyday business suit shocked to discover that the sleeves are too long, shoulders too wide and the whole kit and caboodle is woefully out of date.

So it's news that the Spring '11 menswear shows, that ended in Milan on Tuesday, are really shaking things up, particularly when it comes to color. That's a gutsy move in a challenging global economy where sales are down and designers want play it safe (tie sales have been pitiful recently). But the wealthy are still wealthy and they don't need anything, so newness is what they're after, according to menswear analysts.

Giorgio Armani (pictured above) delivered splashed citrus yellow and sky blue everywhere-on belts, ties, scarves and shirts. Marc Jacobs presented subtle silhouette changes which he zipped up by hints of electric blue and fuchsia. Gucci designer Frida Giannini dreamed of young guys jetting between Rome and Marrakesh. What would these bourgeois gentilhommes wear? Why, suede shorts, Berber jewelry and velvet horse bit loafers, of course.

Gucci GG Running Large Python Tote, Handbag of the Day

Gucci GG Running Large Python ToteThe Gucci GG Running Large Python Tote is a must-have this summer for its prairie girl appeal and its rich texture will stand up through the fall season, as well. No wonder you're not allowed to order more than three of them every 30 days.

This bag breathes comfortable elegance with its perfect python surface, luxurious goldtone hardware, the logo embossed zipper pull, the demure leather belt and the chocolate brown lining. The charming, slender handles drop just 6½ inches to the 18"W X 13"H X 7"D body of the bag, making it easy and attractive to carry.

The python tote is an exceptionally versatile bag; its color seems casual at first look, but the luxe texture is unmistakably extravagant, making it appropriate for everything from a quaint picnic to a ritzy dinner party.

The Gucci GG Running Large Python Tote is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $3,100.00.

Gucci Packable ToteGucci's Packable Nylon Tote is perfect for those looking for a travel-ready bag that's lightweight and easy to stow away when not in use. Made of versatile logo-print nylon with textured leather trim, most of its personality and charm come from the little teddy bear that dangles off one side via tab snap attachment and features a back zipper closure for stowing change or tiny secrets. Available in either black or this lovely shade of red that looks like pink, the tote has double top handles, an open top, and goes for $355 at Saks.

Gucci's Sukey Bag to Benefit UNICEF

The Sukey Bag
This is the sixth year of Gucci's partnership with UNICEF, and to commemorate the ongoing relationship, during which Gucci has raised $7 million in support, they are offering this limited edition Sukey bag in a demure pale gray to benefit the cause.

A full 25 percent of the retail cost of each gray Gucci Sukey bag will go to support UNICEF's Schools for Africa campaign, which improves schools in disadvantaged regions of Africa "to create those conditions that will attract children to school, keep them there and provide them with a safe and protective environment where they can learn and play."

The bag itself has a philanthropic story; Gucci's Creative Director Frida Giannini co-chaired a fundraising event in support of UNICEF back in 2008, and one of the prizes offered included an opportunity to name a bag. The winner chose the name "Sukey," and while we don't know exactly what they paid for the privilege, the event raised $2.7 million for Schools for Africa.

The $1,295.00 Sukey is one of Gucci's best-selling handbags around the world, and every one (in this color) sold until February 28, 2011 will be an investment in the future of Africa. So, if you were going to buy a new luxury bag this year, buy this one.

The Fashion Statement: Bootie Call

Filed under: Shoes, The Fashion Statement

sergio rossi heels

Italian luxury shoe purveyor Sergio Rossi is commemorating the Cannes Film Festival in a few weeks with an evening sandal made of crystals adorning a soft suede net (pictured above). You can get the limited-edition shoes Sergio Rossi boutiques in Milan, Rome, Paris and London. Personally, I don't miss the diamonds (as in some red-carpet publicity shoes of yore). And, not surprisingly, Sergio Rossi's silhouette of choice? A quasi bootie.

In fact, shoe designers are increasingly pushing creativity to the max, as anyone who has seen this season's Alexander McQueen's armadillo shoes or the Gucci's caged ankle boots can attest. And most designs, whether designers call them sandals, pumps or platforms, are centered upon the bootie concept.

For those of you who've been living under a rock lately, the bootie or shootie or ankle boots or whatever you'd like to call them, are high-heeled boots cropped off at the ankle. It is THE shoe of the moment and they've been around for the past few seasons. Even if the shoe is considered a sandal, the modern look is a foot that's strapped up, buckled up, wrapped up in silk and, generally speaking, hidden from plain view. In other words, anything that gives the impression of a bootie.

World's Most Valuable Luxury Brands

World's most valuable luxury brands
What is the world's most valuable luxury brand? According to a study released today compiled by market research firm Millward Brown Optimor, the most valuable brand is France's Louis Vuitton with a brand value of nearly $19.8 billion.

Hermes, with a brand value of $8.45 billion, landed in the second spot, followed by Gucci ($7.58 billion), Chanel ($5.54 billion) and Hennessy ($5.36 billion).

Millward Brown used an economic use approach to the valuation, with brand values based on the intrinsic value of the brand derived from its ability to generate demand. The values reflect the sum of all future earnings a brand is forecasted to generate, discounted to present-day value.

"The big takeaway is that brands that focused on heritage are the ones that topped the list," says Lauren Sherman, editor of Fashionista, a fashion news website. "Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Gucci all focused this year on heritage."

According to Sherman, Louis Vuitton's advertising campaigns focused on travel, which ties to its history of being a maker of steamer trunks, while Hermes began to again market their saddles and also sponsored a horse show in Paris, which they haven't done in years. "They are going back to the basics."

Gucci, on the other hand, is focusing on its vintage bags. The company recently formed a partnership with Christie's in which the auction house will provide appraisal services for owners of vintage Gucci leathergoods. "Gucci Collector: Presented by Christie's" provides auction estimates for vintage Gucci items that are of a type and value typically sold at Christie's. The service is provided free of charge.

"Gucci wants to bring back the company from mass luxury which it had become," says Sherman.

Millward Brown used the BrandZ database of its parent company, WPP, which owns several marketing, advertising and public relations firms, among others. BrandZ tracked sales and marketing for more than 1,000 brands over the course of a year to come up with the list.

The brand that saw the most growth on the list this year was Hermes, with an increase of 8%.

Perhaps most surprising about the list this year were the brands that didn't fare well. The brands that are more closely associated with trends and high fashion, such as Prada and Burberry, did not rank high on the list---in fact, Prada was knocked off the top ten list altogether.

Chanel's ranking dropped from where it was a year ago and lost 11% of its brand value. "Chanel will always sell perfume and leather goods which are classic products, but compared to Gucci and Louis Vuitton, they are more associated with high fashion," says Sherman. "Any brand where the runway is more important than the boutique, suffered a bit."
