Samoset Resort: Quiet Luxury in Maine

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

The Samoset Resort, in Rockland, Maine, is fairly remote and offers a comfortable retreat from the frenetic pace of city life. Located a tad more than three hours from Boston, it's a great place for people looking to disappear for a few days, either to swing a golf club or simply to hide from the realities of everyday life.

To truly appreciate what this property has to offer, though, you need to walk through the main building, across the golf course and along the water a bit. Or, you can have someone give you a lift in a golf cart, which might be a bit easier.

The Flume Cottage sits apart from the rest of the resort, resulting in seclusion within seclusion. This1,500 square foot cottage, refurbished in 2010, sits right on the water, with a back deck that sports drop-dead views of the breakwater, with its lighthouse at the end. And, you can soak in the sights from the Jacuzzi that's out there. Since the only adjacent action on land is golf, you don't need to worry about the slightest noise intruding on your getaway, except, perhaps, a knock at the door when your meals arrive.

BMW Deal Makes Ritz Naples Even Better

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

ritz-carlton naplesI don't know about you, but I never need an extra reason to visit the Ritz-Carlton Naples Resorts. I'm not a golfer, so I can't speak with authority about the courses. But, they looked incredible. The spa, on the other hand, I experienced directly, and it continues to be among my favorites. Well, through April 29, 2010, there's another perk. Guests of both the beach and golf resorts will have access to eight BMWs and one MINI convertible. The cars will be available for complimentary use through the BMW/Ritz-Carlton Driving Tour.

Guests will have access to the cars from half an hour to up to three hours, based on availability, from 9 AM to 6 M every day. If you have restaurant plans that take you off-property, you can arrange to pick up the keys to one of the BMWs by 5:30 PM and return the car by 11 PM. To make a reservation, stop by or call the BMW/Ritz-Carlton Driving Tour desk at either the golf or beach resort. Making a reservation a week in advance is a smart move.

The Five Sacred Rules of All Private Golf Clubs

Whether you're playing in Maine or New Mexico some things remain the same: the five sacred principles of how to behave at a private golf club. Each club has its own set of etiquette standards but these 5 rules apply everywhere.
  1. Never throw a golf club in anger. Ever.
  2. Don't change your shoes in the parking lot. It's tacky. Head to the locker room, that's what they're there for.
  3. No blue jeans. Not even really nice, expensive ones.
  4. Take your hat off when indoors or sitting down to eat.
  5. Turn off your cell phone when on the course or in the clubhouse.
These are the basics that can be applied no matter where you go in the country, but if you're new to a particular course it is best to find out before you play what the particular etiquette standards are at that club. Some clubs are much stricter than the above list (i.e. no cell phones anywhere on the property, no swearing, women must wear skirts, etc) and you don't want to assume and embarrass yourself by inadvertently making a major social blunder.

Do the U.S. Open In Style

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

The U.S. Open just came to an end out on Long Island, drawing enormous crowds of fans who were undeterred by the unfavorable weather. Even if it hadn't rained, they would have struggled to enjoy the experience, as the event's organizers designed it in a way that made attendees earn their pleasure. And, the complaints were many. I heard one guy complain about $9 hot dogs, and the lines were awful. Trying to drive to the Bethpage golf course was a nightmare, as some had to park up to half an hour away and take buses to the tournament.

Many mused that there had to be a better way. And, there was. If you want to enjoy the U.S. Open next year, keep the following tips in mind. Plan ahead, and you can engineer a fantastic experience, even if the United States Golf Association is trying to prevent it.

1. Stay in the city
This may not be applicable next year, since the open isn't held at the same golf course every year. But, if the event is taking place on Long Island (and this goes for anything, not just golf), stay in Manhattan. You will have a bit of a hike in front of you in the morning and evening, but you'll also have the city at your disposal – which is definitely worth the trouble. I stayed at 60 Thompson down in SoHo, and I'm now more than happy to recommend it. The stylish hotel offers a great contrast to the attire worn by golfers (and golf enthusiasts).

Smoking Ban Threatens to Make Golf Pointless

Not all golfers smoke cigars, and not all cigar smokers golf. Nonetheless, there is a hefty chunk of both groups that overlaps. Step out onto the links at any major course, and you're bound to find more than a handful of duffers with stogies lit while they fret about their backswings. Now, this tradition is in jeopardy.

Across the country, public golf courses are trying to ban what essentially is outdoor smoking where common courtesy dictates that you not get too close to the groups around you anyway. It comes as no shock that many golfers are resisting the trend.

The city of Spokane, WA is the latest to attempt a prohibition on lighting up while teeing off, only to back down in the face of immense opposition. It's already hard enough to enjoy a cigar in Washington, which has banned indoor smoking – not to mention puffing within 25 feet of a door or window.

The Spokane golfers' victory is an anomaly. Several public courses have succeeded in keeping cigars off courses, including San Francisco, Glendale and Pasadena, CA; Hawaii County, HI; Bloomington, MN.; Goshen, IN.; Abilene, TX and Arvada, CO.

So, it looks like you'll only see the most upscale of cigars at golf courses in the near future. After all, country clubs will be the only places that can make their own rules.

Cigars, Golf and Happy Hour in Pennsylvania

What are you doing on April 24? If you're a golfer, you're about to get a new answer to that question. That's the first day of the Famous 2009 Golf Tour, sponsored by Famous Smoke Shop and ESPN Radio of the Lehigh Valley. So, clean your clubs and get ready to head out to the Riverview Golf & Country Club in Easton, PA in a few weeks.

The golf tour itself stretches all the way to the Championship Round on October 9, so if you have a decent swing, you could spend close to six months chasing a little white ball around a carefully manicured lawn.

"Each match will be a two-man 'Best Ball Scramble,'" according to Famous Smoke Shop store manager, Tim Carr. "If a player doesn't have a partner, we will assign them one. Players' handicaps will also be used as a guide for creating the foursomes and pairing-up singles, but not for scoring of the rounds, which will be based on a points system," he added.

If, like me, you don't play golf, Famous Smoke Shop has a few other events planned for the summer, so you'll have no shortage of reasons to light up a cigar (as if you need one).

  • Golf Round 1, April 25: Classic Car Show
  • Golf Round 2, May 29: Motorcycle Show
  • Golf Round 3, June 27: Cigar Expo 2009
  • Golf Round 4, July 25: Classic Car Show
  • Golf Round 5, August 29: Motorcycle Show
  • Golf Round 6, September 19: TBD

The events will be held at the Famous Smoke Shop store in Easton, PA.

If you're planning to enter the tournament, the cost is $89.99 per round, and there are pro-rated discounts available for volume. A Happy Hour follows each event, where food and drinks will be served ... with featured cigars from event sponsors Drew Estate (ACID), CAO, Camacho, Cusano, Rocky Patel and Los Blancos.

Playboy Chooses Camacho for Golf VIP Players Party

camacho cigarsI'm not surprised that Playboy Golf selected Camacho to be the official cigar for The Playboy Golf VIP Players Party. Camacho's a strong brand, has great name recognition ... and its sticks do tend to smoke well.

The event will take place on Friday, March 27, 2009, and athletes, executives, bunnies and other celebrities will be invited to smoke the Camacho Select Lonsdale. Cigars will be cut and lit at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, CA. As if the great smokes aren't enough, the night's festivities will include dancing, entertainment and the body painting for which Playboy has become (in)famous.

Dylan Austin, marketing director of Camacho Cigars, says, "Playboy is one of the most iconic brands for gentleman worldwide, and we at Camacho Cigars are honored to be selected as the official cigar for The Playboy Golf VIP Players Party."

Golfers will be pleased to find an extra treat – a few Camacho cigars in the gift bags.

Bad Ass Golf Carts (The Name Says It All)

Filed under: Gadgets, Luxury Cars & Autos

Golfing gets more and more popular every year it seems, and although lots of people think it's a really good time it still has a reputation of being a somewhat quiet, calm, and sophisticated sport. That stereotype could be changing, however, thanks to Bad Ass Golf Carts.

Yes, that's really what they're called and yes, they really are bad ass. There are numerous customized carts available, including one that jumps (seen here), one modeled after a Hummer, and a limo version that seats six. You can also buy customized parts like wheels and accessories for existing carts if you want to make your own. Sounds like good times! $12,000 - $18,000

The World's Most Expensive Golf Courses

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

All golfers dream of playing on the best courses around the world, but only a few actually get to experience it. Although "the best" is a subjective term when it comes to golf courses (you'll get slightly different results looking at different lists), there's one thing that comes straight down to numbers: price. How much do you currently pay for a round of golf? $500? Probably not, unless you play regularly at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, NV, the most expensive golf course in the world. Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, CA ($475) and Old Head Golf Links in Kinsale, Ireland ($400) round out the top three on the list of the world's most expensive golf courses. What do you think? Are they worth it?

Luxist Holiday Guide: Gifts for the Golfer

Golfers are relatively easy to shop for when it comes to the availability of gadgets, clothing and other sporting equipment. Unlike some other sports, there are a huge number of products for men and for women of all ages. The problem is that golfers usually like to stock up on the latest stuff themselves. Tell your golfing giftees that they aren't allowed to buy themselves anything this month and check out our top picks for ideas. We didn't include any clubs because, quite frankly, you sometimes need to head out to the pro shop and try them before you play. With any of these, a golfer will be ready to go right away:

The Golfer's Cooler Bag holds balls, tees and pencils, in addition to holding up to 12 cans in the main cooler compartment, so you won't have to wait until you get the the clubhouse to get a drink, even on a hot day. The nylon bag can be monogrammed with three initials to make it personal. Price: $50.

Charriol Diamond Golf Bag Charm

There aren't always as many golf-oriented gifts for women as there are for men, but fortunately Charriol made this adorable Diamond Gold Bag Charm. The bag is made of 18K white gold and has .03 carats of pavé diamonds sent into it, which is just enough to give it a little bit of sparkle without making it too opulent for wearing out to the links. It comes with a chain, which adjusts from 16"-18" and is made in the US. But if golf isn't your sport, they also have a tennis racket pendant ($350) and an ice skating one ($325), as well. Price: $275.

Chanel Golf Bag

Perhaps the only thing better than a golf bag is a Chanel Golf Bag. Already know for their high-quality craftsmanship and the elegant look of their apparel, handbags and other goods, it is not surprising to find that well-outfitted golfers - especially women golfers - are looking to Chanel to accompany them onto the golf course. This black and grey bag is priced at $2,965 and is adorned with the signature Chanel logo. The golf clubs are sold separately for $795. The bags are available at some Saks Fifth Avenue stores and at Chanel boutiques.
