Updated Nissan GT-R Brings The Fight Back to Porsche

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

If you've been under the impression that the cold war is over, you haven't been watching the arms race unfolding between Japan and Germany. Fortunately we're not talking about World War III here, but an escalation in the performance wars between Nissan and Porsche. The former took aim square at the latter with the all-conquering GT-R, and Porsche has been responding in kind with ever faster versions of the 911. With the ball now in their proverbial court, Nissan unveiled a revised version of its all-wheel-drive supercar affectionately known as Godzilla at the Tokyo Motor Show this year.

Improving on the formula that already incorporates a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 driving 480 horsepower to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the revised GT-R has been fitted with an upgraded suspension, exhaust system, aerodynamics package, high-performance tires and info-tainment system to bring the fight back to Germany. Your turn, Porsche.

$23,000 Wooden Japanese Sculptures

Collectors of all kinds are known the world over for spending exorbitant amounts of money on objects that get the majority of their worth from the sentimental value they hold with their owners. Japanese folklore is no exception, and a company in Japan is hoping to cash in on some collector love by offering hand-carved wooden sculptures of the famous mythical monsters Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. The creations are each extremely detailed and impressive, as well as quite pricey. The smaller Godzilla and Mothra versions are priced at $3,000 each, but the real star of the show is the three-headed King Ghidorah -- he stands 8 1/2 feet tall and costs a cool $23,000.

Could make for an interesting statement in your entryway, perhaps? (ha!)

Feel Like Godzilla in Your Own Home

Okay, I'm not going to say these creations have no place anywhere, but I'm certainly going to say (in between fits of laughter) that appropriate placements for these Furniture Follies pieces are certainly limited! The idea is to have furniture in your home that is functional (storage chests, cupboards, TV cabinets...) yet interesting because it's all shaped like miniature buildings. And besides what you see here the creators are willing to work with you to create a bespoke piece just for you.

With this in my house I would totally feel like Godzilla, or King Kong, or somebody huge and I don't think I'd like it. But I could see these in a children's room maybe, that could be fun. Priced around £4500, depending.
