Glenlivet Decades from Gordon & MacPhail

Glenlivet Decades

Gordon & MacPhail have set down a new benchmark with its Generations series. The label started with the 70-year-old Mortlach, and has now been followed by a Glenlivet of the same age. But since not everyone will be able to buy the 70yo Livet -- quantities being both extremely limited and expensive -- the independent bottler has accompanied it with the Glenlivet Decades private collection.

The Decades collection is comprised of five bottles representing five decades of Glenlivet history: one bottle each from 1954, 1963, 1974, 1980 and 1991.

The enticing range is available as a five-bottle pack for £2,850, or individually at prices ranging from £95 to £1,250 depending on the age.

Glenlivet 70 Generations

Independent bottlers Gordon & MacPhail stole headlines last year in the whisky world when they released the oldest single malt ever bottled. That was a 70-year old scotch from the Mortlach distillery, launching the company's Generations series. Now G&M has followed up with another classic, this time from the world-famous Glenlivet.

Holiday Shopping Guide: Ten Great Whiskies To Buy

There are few things a whiskey connoisseur likes better under the tree than a long, festively wrapped box containing something special.

It has been a good year for new whiskey expressions, so there is no shortage of options. And I would recommend something new to the market to help the receiver usher in a new year.

Sure, you can buy your Glenmorangie or Glenlivet loving gift recipient a bottle of 12-year old. But put a bit more thought into it, and a bit more brass, and you can turn a grin into a broad smile. For holiday gift-giving, I always thing it's better to give someone a limited edition or otherwise special expression of the brand they prefer. The other route to go is to introduce them to something unique in the category that will capture their interest and sense of curiosity.

These days, almost every brand of Scotch, Irish or American whiskey has a "special," whether it's a single-barrel, cask-strength, extra-aged or barrel-finished.

Here are some gift suggestions of new whiskies Luxist has tried this year and reviewed. Most of these will be found at better whiskey shops in major cities, as well as duty-free travel retail, rather than the corner store.

The Glenlivet Celebrates Expansion with new Founders Reserve

glenlivetOver the course of the summer, The Glenlivet underwent a £10 million expansion of its highland distillery. The project was overseen by its new Master Distiller Alan Winchester and which promises to help the distillery remain the top-selling single malt in the United States, to say nothing of its market domination overseas.

None less prominent a figure than Charles Prince of Wales was on hand together with the parent company executives to dedicate the new facility. Fortunately the 184-year-old distillery isn't about to keep the celebrations to itself though: to commemorate the expansion, The Glenlivet has released a new bottling called the Founders Reserve.

With a rich citrus nose and palate of clementines, caramel, cinnamon and raisins, the Founders Reserve will be available in strictly limited quantities at $375 per 750ml bottle.

Pernod Ricard Aims To Make Glenlivet World's No. 1 Malt

Scotland's Glenfiddich Distillery sells the world's best selling single-malt Scotch whisky. But French drinks giant Pernod Ricard aims to change that by building up its Glenlivet brand.

The company is pumping $14.7 million into Glenlivet to expand distilling capacity and storage/aging buildings. The investment is significant considering that many experts see an over-supply of whisky in the next five years.

The French group also markets blended whiskies Chivas Regal and Ballantine's. Those brands are recipes that rely on whiskies of different ages and from dozens of different distilleries. So, expanding production of those brands is easier than growing single-malt sales. To be called single-malt, though, the whisky must come from one distillery. A distillery such as Glenlivet blends its own whisky of different ages to create its "expressions," but they must all come from one distillery to be called "single-malt."

Speyside Glenlivet Mineral Water

Not to be confused with the famous Glenlivet whiskeys, though they are produced in the same region in Scotland, Speyside Glenlivet Mineral Water is completely alcohol-free. The water, which is available in still and sparkling versions, has a "unique and natural blend of minerals" that are said to enhance the flavor of the water, perhaps in the same way that they play a role in shaping the flavor of the beverages produced at nearby distilleries. Somewhat less expensive than other high-end mineral waters, Speyside Glenlivet is packaged in glass bottles and comes in cases of either 24/330ml bottles or 12/750ml bottles, both for $39.
