Vetrazzo Countertops

Check out the gorgeous countertop above. Those bright bits of red glass are actually red lenses from decommissioned traffic lights. Vetrazzo is a company that specializes in countertops made from recycled glass. Each countertop panel is made from 550 pounds of crushed recycled glass from traffic lights, windshields, and beverage bottles (there is even one beautiful cobalt blue countertop made with Skyy vodka bottles). In just this year Vetrazzo transformed over 250 tons of recycled glass into countertops. The company also works green, using a closed-loop water filtration system and working to be 100-percent solar powered by year's end.

Wobble Cognac Glasses

Say the word "whimsy" and you've got my attention -- I love anything fun and slightly wacky, but not necessarily ridiculously over the top. These Wobble Cognac Glasses are great, I think, because they look interesting without sacrificing any class. They were designed with bouquet, temperature, and volume in mind, and the delicate shape is said to enhance the pleasure, deep color, and movement of the drink (and also the glass to some extent, obviously). Made of hand-blown glass and available in sets of two for $50.

Steuben Glass Fall 2007 Collection

Steuben Glass has introduced 29 new designs for their Fall 2007 collection. Among the angels and animals, this piece by Peter Drobny stands out. A solid crystal block provides the the canvas for a stunningly realistic image of a stand of Aspens. The artist's attention to detail is truly amazing, resulting in a piece that resembles a beautiful black and white photograph. $10,500.

Esque Terrariums

Even if you're not generally a fan of houseplants, terrariums are a great way to bring some life and green indoors in a way that keeps with structured and styled decor -- you get all the benefits of a houseplant but without the potentially unruly appearance and dead leaves falling all over.

These darling little Esque Terrariums from Velocity are perfect to sit anywhere. Hand-blown, each one is unique and signed by the artist. They're made from 100% recycled glass and heated in a furnace powered completely by wind energy -- truly "green" art in more ways than one! The plant isn't included, and they're available in two sizes (8" and 12"). $600-$800

Hand-Crafted Wine Carafe with Glass Inside

Next time you're in need of a unique gift for somebody that loves wine consider if they have one of these Wine Carafes with a wine glass snuggled inside -- I'm guessing they won't but would love to. Mouth-blown and hand-crafted carefully from a single piece of glass in Romania (how interesting would that be to watch?), obviously no two end up exactly alike. Very simple and classical in design, with no color or patterns to distract from the silhouette. Dishwasher safe (surprisingly), 12"x3.25", $95.

Jay Strongwater's Butterfly on Pear

Jay Strongwater's home accents are instantly recognizable for their stunning, old-world appearance. From the Papillion Collection, this sparkly butterfly rests of the stem of a swirled green and topaz glass pear. The butterfly and leaf are hand-painted enamel over metal, accented with hand-set Swarovski crystals. The richness and depth of the pear alongside the delicate butterfly results in a striking piece of art that appears antique and modern at the same time. From stem to base, the piece measures 5.25" high. $525.

Blow Table Lamp

The Blow Table Lamp: Here an otherwise fairly unremarkable table lamp gets a stylish and artsy upgrade simply by sticking it inside a glass bubble. What is it about glass domes that make whatever is inside so much more interesting? This lamp has a modern and functional appeal, and comes in a few different styles and sizes. And the best part about table lamps, their flexibility, remains intact -- you can control the position and angle of the lamp by moving an attached magnet that sits on the outside of the bubble. Crafty crafty! By Studio Italia Design, $1200+

Venini Bolle Bottles

There is something about these bottles that I find very peaceful and serene. Glowing bands of Murano glass are fused together to create a single vessel and the result is beautiful and calm. It is fitting that the technique used to join the glass is known as the Incalmo method. Designed in 1968 by Tapio Wirkkala for Venini, the gently curving shapes of the bottles are set off by vibrant swaths of red and green, subdued with softer shades of blue and gray. And that dash of lemon yellow keeps these mellow bottles from being too quiet. $7380 for the set of five.

HUE Chocolate Glass Cabinet Hardware

Although there are some beautiful choices when it comes to cabinet hardware, generally the the pulls on your doors and drawers don't attract much attention. These pulls from Spectra Decor are an exception. Handmade by artisans, the dimensional look is achieved by fusing together opaque and transparent layers of colored glass, which all rests beautifully on a satin pewter base. The HUE line of cabinet hardware is available in a variety of color combinations to match most any decor, but the chocolate brown and turquoise is my personal favorite. The quickest way to achieve a cabinet makeover is to install new hardware - and who wouldn't want to look at these each day? $38 to $78 each.

Union Street Glass

Union Street Glass is no fly-by-night operation, Glassblower Guy Corrie and his wife and business partner Leanne first started their business in 1980. Now the company has a 10,000 square foot studio in Richmond, CA. Guy works with a small team of artists making light fixtures, lamps and other glass objects. They have also worked with a production team in the Czech Republic to develop a line of stemware. The pieces come in several different product lines each with an overarching design sense. My favorite is the Urchin, brightly colored pieces with crystal spikes. These pieces are all handmade in their Northern California studio. The elliptical platter shown here comes in ten vivid colors and sells for $770.

Prospetto Lighting Creazione Collection

This hanging chandelier light is definitely beautiful, but you also want to make sure you hang it somewhere where there's no danger of someone putting an eye out -- not a good choice to dangle low over a dining room table or buffet for instance. The Prospetto Lighting Creazione Collection consists of this lamp in a variety of colors (shown here in "fruit") as either chandelier or floor lamp styles in small, medium, and large sizes. Handmade of mouth-blown glass it looks like an explosion of party ribbons, perfect for a room that needs a touch of whimsy to lighten the mood. Priced at $8999.99 and up.

Cocktails and Lace Chandelier

Here's a unique take on reusing old wine glasses -- stick them together and make a lighting fixture! Created and handmade by designers Michael and Nora for Green with Glamour, the Cocktails and Lace Chandelier is beautiful and definitely draws the eye for more than just a quick glance. But something stresses me about seeing all those wine glasses strung up in mid-air in that haphazard way -- I can't help but imagine them all as tumbling down and about to shatter on the table or floor below (especially that last little one on the very end). Measures 35" x 15", $3250.

John Chiles Art Glass Goblets

A table full of these happy goblets would be sure to brighten up any party and get people smiling while still maintaining an air of sophistication. John Chiles strives "to give simple shapes gestures using color and playful geometric juxtapositions" by using traditional glass blowing techniques. Each part is created separately and then fused together, which lends that much more individual personality to the finished product. And it seems pretty much everything in his collection has this same air of peaceful whimsy about it. The goblets are priced at $365 each.

Kohler Glass Lavatories

Kohler Glass Lavatories combine the raw brilliant beauty of glass with the equally raw and brilliant beauty of water. It seems a natural pairing as light and textures are blended together using innovating techniques to create the several different glass lavatory designs available as part of Kohler's Nature's Chemistry™ collection. Pictured above is the Lavinia, and also available in the collection are the deeper Facet vessel and the rectangular Antilla. And the look is easy to customize by mixing and matching your personal choice of fixtures. $900-$2000.
