Georgica Manor, Estate of the Day

Today's home in East Hampton, New York is build as a designer's home but I haven't been able to find out the identity of the designer. The 14,000 square foot stone and stucco manor house on 1.3 acres overlooking a 17-acre meadow preserve minutes from the ocean. The home is beautifully turned out with a dramatic double-height entry hall with some sort of sculpture, a living room with coffered ceiling, formal dining room, large kitchen/family room, library and the coolest room in the house, a circular domed office. The master suite has a study and twin baths and there are four additional guest bedroom suites. The finished basement has a playroom, wine storage, gym and two staff bedrooms. The property includes a heated pool, stone pool house and a garage. The lovely designer furnishings are available separately. It's listed at $17 million.

Today's estate floors me, mainly because of the price. It is listed at $40 million, which is not such a surprise in East Hampton, New York but for your money you don't even get an ocean view, just frontage on Georgica Pond. The home is a huge new 12,000 square foot mansion next to a 16 acre meadow reserve. The scale inside is grand with a 30-foot high living room with a dramatic wall of paned glass, French chalked paneling and hand-pegged parquet de Versailles floors. A whole chateau's worth of 18th century stone fireplaces seem to have been ripped from their homes and set into this new home, some at what seem to be odd proportions. The home also has a walnut paneled library, media room and the de rigueur massive family room/kitchen which opens to a Turkish limestone terrace with an infinity-edge pool and hot tub. There is also a separate two-bedroom guest cottage.

Six years ago, Chris Whittle, founder of school-management company Edison Schools, decided to sell his Hamptons home. The Wall Street Journal Private Properties column reports that he tried to sell the entire estate for $45 million, then $36 million, but eventually took it off the market. Now he is offering a 3.7-acre property which is home to a classic shingled four-bedroom, four-bath guest house, designed in 1990 by architect Peter Marino. It is listed at $27 million which is a bit high but does include 403 feet on prized Georgica Pond and it is the Hamptons after all. The home has a large living room, country kitchen, master bedroom suite plus three guest bedroom suites and powder room. It is listed at $27 million.
