Museum-Quality Pateks Worth Millions Up for Auction

A one-of-a-kind, oversized 1930s Patek Philippe chronograph that belonged to dashing Italian racecar driver Count Felice Trossi is expected to fetch close to $2 million at Sotheby's in Geneva today. Famed Fiat chairman Gianni Agnelli probably copied Trossi's habit of wearing his Patek over his shirt cuff, the better to keep time while winning the Italian Grand Prix, which Trossi did in 1947. These day's Trossi's name lives on mainly for automotive enthusiasts; his legendary one-off 1930 Mercedes-Benz SSK, now known as the "Count Trossi", is the star of Ralph Lauren's incredible car collection.

The sale also features several other Pateks including some extremely rare chronographs. Meanwhile, Christie's will stage it's own Important Watch auction in Geneva tomorrow, featuring two of the most important antique one-off Pateks ever to go ion the block: a stainless steel perpetual calendar with phases of the moon, and a platinum perpetual calendar with sweep centre seconds and phases of the moon. Both are estimated at an astounding $1.4 million - $2.4 million.

Most Valuable Patek Philippes on Exhibit

Patek Philippe, maker of the most coveted watches in the world, is staging an unprecedented exhibit of the most valuable timepieces from its collection here in the U.S. The exhibit, featuring hundreds of items including priceless pieces from the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva, is on display at Tiffany & Co.'s Fifth Avenue flagship through Saturday evening; next month it travels to the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons in Los Angeles, running from May 16 - 18.

With Patek Philippes fetching record prices at auction, this is a rare opportunity to view timepieces that the likes of Christie's would kill to get their hands on. The exhibits culled from the company's 169-year history include rare pocket watches and the first Swiss wristwatch ever made.

Cornelius & Cie Watches

A Dutch jeweler Paul Pertijss, and a watch engraver Kees Engelbarts have created a new high-end watch brand based in Geneva, Switzerland. Cornelius & Cie will produce exclusive watches, using vintage watch movements in proprietary cases. Each movement is embellished by hand, skeletonised and/or engraved by Kees Engelbarts and personalized engravings are available. The first collection will be 12 Chronosome 46XY watches. This model uses a 1935 A. Schild movement with eccentrically placed barrel. There will be three models: one with a completely skeletonized movement and dial (two pieces in platinum, two pieces in red gold) one with a partly skeletonized movement and closed dial (four pieces in red gold) and one with Côtes de Genève decoration (four pieces in red gold). Each watch will be sold with an Orbita watch winder and an extra barrel which can be engraved with a personal text or picture. The watches will be available in April and prices start at 39,500 euros up to 115,000 euros for the fully skeletonized version.

Jeans Mogul Buys Massive Diamond

The jeans business has been really good to Guess? clothing company founder Georges Marciano. The proof of that was on display when Marciano spent just under $16.2 million for the largest top-quality, brilliant-cut white diamond ever to appear at auction at Sotheby's on Wednesday. The price ws just shy of the $16.5 million record set for a 100.1 carat stone in 1995. The stone is a D-color stone with flawless clarity and cut, polish, and symmetry all graded excellent and clocks in at a healthy 84.37 carats. The auction took place at the Beau Rivage hotel in Geneva, Switzerland and brought in just under $57 million in total sales. Mariciano, who bid by phone, has named his diamond after his daughter Chloe. The stone was owned by Ron Cohen, the owner of the Los Angeles-based Clean Diamonds, who bought it from Angola's national diamond company two years ago.

The Spyker C12 Zagato

It's practically old news at this point but I would be remiss if I didn't direct you to Autoblog's pics of the Spyker C12 Zagato debut in Geneva. This is one gorgeous and hotly anticipated vehicle. There will be just 24 of these cars available and it has a 6.0L W12 engine that can go to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 193 mph. The cars sell for $648,000. Autoblog has a luscious gallery with details of this unique vehicle.

Bentley Brooklands

Many people have seen the coverage of Paris Hilton running her Bentley Continental GT into things and getting tickets; that poor car has been through alot lately. That's the tragedy of youth, wealth, and powerful cars. But, I think we should stand together and ban Paris from the new Bentley Coupe, Brooklands. It would be a travesty to see her ungraciously exit this fine vehicle and have paparazzi crawling on it. Hopefully, its staid styling and land yacht status would keep her away. We can hope. Autoblog was on hand in Geneva for the debut.

Spyker Planning New Flagship

Our friends at Autoblog let us know that ultra-exclusive automaker Spyker is planning to release a brand new flagship car this March at the Geneva auto show.

Their last release, the D12 SUV, will not be produced until December 2007 even though it already has a waitlist of more than 300 buyers and, unfortunately, the Dutch car maker usually only produces 100 vehicles every year. All this means that there is no telling exactly when the new supercars will actually make it to market, but it is rumored that it will be built around Spyker's C12 base, which uses an Audi sourced, 500hp, 6.0L W12 engine.

Pearls Sell Big For Royal House

Pearls were the softly glowing stars of Christie's royal jewels auction in Geneva this week. The auction, described only as the property of a royal house, brought in a total of over $31 million, easily beating the estimate of around $20 million. One of the stars of the show was this parure (a fancy word for a set of jewels meant to be worn together). The Gulf Pearl Parure, a pearl and diamond set created by Harry Winston, brought in around $4.1 million, the low end of the estimate. Items that went over estimate included unset saltwater pearls.

No word on which royal house the jewels came from but the Middle East Times says that rumors have said it could be Saudi. More pieces from the same Royal House are on sale today as part of the second part of the Van Cleef & Arpels tribute auction including a stunning ruby and diamond parure (it's my word of the day) that is estimated to sell for over half a million dollars.

Rolls-Royce Shows Off the 101EX in Geneva

At the Geneva Auto Show, Rolls-Royce is showing off their new coupe concept, the 101EX. The new car has a new two-tone effect with brushed aluminum on the hood and windshield header. It has 21" wheels and suicide doors. Inside it's typically luxe with exotic woods and leathers but it also has a fiber-optic headliner that creates a starry, starry night inside your car. It's a Rolls and of course it's gorgeous but not exactly the most exciting concept car we have ever seen by a long shot. Autoblog has more pics of the car.

Lamborghini Murciélago LP640

Our siblings over at Autoblog posted on the newest Lambo to lust after, the Murciélago LP640 which will debut in Geneva. The car has a 6.5 liter engine and has a  'Thrust' electronic launch control to give it the power to make the zero-to-sixty trek in a 3.4 second leap. It can hit a top speed of 210 mph. Other details include include variable-valve timing, drive-by-wire throttle, and optional ceramic brakes. As one of Autoblog's commenters keenly noted, the dangerous inky curves of the car combined with the eerily glowing orange interior in this shot make it look like Satan's dreamcar.

Rinspeed zaZen

The Rinspeed tuners do all kinds of sexy things for Porsches. This year's prototype for the Geneva Motor Show is the zaZen. According to Inside Line, it's got a Porsche framework but the roof is one giant piece of Makrolon polycarbonate and it has a surface coating made from millions of tiny Swarovski crystals. Other details include a third halogenic brake lamp, transparent plastic seat shells, and a handmade leather-fabric interior. It looks like something Karim Rashid or Philippe Starck would create.
