Presenting the All-New Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Take a good look at the car above, because Alfa Romeo wants you to get used to seeing it. If the Italian automaker has its way, this will be the most popular product in the company's 100-year history. It's the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta, and it's here to stay.

Replacing the old 147, the new Giulietta is positioned just above the MiTo, and while pricing hasn't been announced, Alfa promises its positioned will be attractive enough to lure potential buyers away from the Volkswagen Golf. The vehicle was initially expected to carry the 149 nameplate before Alfa changed tracks to Milano. Workers displaced by Alfa's move to Turin, however, prompted the company to revive the age-old Giulietta badge.

With styling cues borrowed from the 8C Competizione supercar in a more aggressive format, the Giulietta will offer a range of four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines ranging from 120 horsepower to an eventual 230. Each model gets start-stop technology for improved fuel economy and will soon get the advanced MultiAir valve management system as well as a dual-clutch transmission. The new Giulietta is scheduled to make its public debut at the Geneva Auto Show in March, so stay tuned.

Alfa Romeo Pumps up the MiTo with the GTA concept in Geneva

When Alfa Romeo launched the MiTo, it was clear the Italian automaker was serious about taking on the premium hatchback market in Europe, a realm until now dominated by BMW's Mini. But while the MiTo borrowed styling cues from its big brother, the 8C Competizione supercar, the small hatch lacked the performance to back up its looks. With the new MiTo GTA, Alfa looks poised to rectify the situation. Resurrecting the company's performance badge, the GTA packs a 230-horsepower turbocharged engine, packed into a compact aluminum and carbon-fiber body with attitude to spare. Although the car shown in Geneva was, strictly speaking, a concept car, Alfa says it will be putting it into production before the end of the year. In the meantime, why not have a look at the images in the gallery below.

$2.5 Million Mansory Vincero Bugatti Veyron for Sale

While Bugatti's much-anticipated Centenaire Bleu edition in celebration of it's 100th anniversary presented at the Geneva Motor Show turned out to be something of a letdown, another tweaked Veyron more than lived up to the hype. We're talking about the Mansory Vincero (above), which we first told you about back in January, of which only three examples are being built. With over $700,000 worth of upgrades added by Mansory, the total price of the Vincero (Italian for "I will win") comes out to about $2.5 million.

One of the Vincero's is now for sale in Abu Dhabi via online global luxury marketplace JamesList. The German-based exotic auto tuner boosted the car's power to 1,109 hp, and the exterior is finished in high-gloss black and grey with chrome accents on the grille, front fenders and doors, and front and rear carbon fiber panels. Inside there's two-tone black and white leather, ambient cabin lighting and custom F1-style shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Ferrari Debuts Tweaked 599 HGTE in Geneva

It doesn't get much better than the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. It's got the engine from the Enzo supercar in a package more suited towards everyday driving and is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic vehicles on the road. But Ferrari didn't get where it is today by sitting on their fine-leather laurels, and with that in mind the Italian sportscar company and racing team released a new package for the 599 called the Handling GT Evoluzione.

The tuned suspension on the 599 HGTE features stiffer springs, beefed-up roll bars and retuned magnetic viscosity shock absorbers, resulting in a lower ride height, complemented by new 20-inch split-five-spoke modular wheels wrapped in new tires. The advanced F1-derived transmission has also been updated, as has the exhaust system, while inside the cabin has been revised with leather, Alcantara suede and carbon fiber. No word on pricing, but considering that the existing 599 retails for over $300k, this is definately one of those "if you have to ask..." moments.

Let Them Eat Cake: Bentley Unveils Continental Supersports in Geneva

With environmentalists pushing for more earth-friendly transport, surely gas-guzzling behemoths like Bentleys would be going the way of the do-do. Not so fast, says Bentley, as the British luxury automakers, famous for making cars that more closely resemble locomotives with enormous engines, has revealed its game plan to take the Winged B badge into the environmental age.

Called the Continental Supersports, the concept car is the first of what Bentley hopes will be many ethanol-burning vehicles it will offer. Not only does the Supersports offer improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, but it is actually the most powerful, fastest Bentley to date. With 621 horsepower on tap and a zero-to-sixty time of an amazing 3.7 seconds, the Bentley Continental Supersports hit the scene in Geneva to say that we can have our cake and eat it, too.

Audi TT RS debuts at Geneva Motor Show

With the R8 supercar, German automaker Audi demonstrated to the world that it is capable of producing the most capable performance sportscars on the road. But the gap between the R8 and its kid brother, the TT, remained as wide as the supercar's track. At this year's Geneva Motor Show, however, Audi closed that gap considerably with the new TT RS.

Packing a turbocharged, direct-injection inline-five with 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, the TT RS is capable of hitting 60 in a scant 4.6 seconds, and will be available in both coupe and convertible body styles. Unfortunately the hot TT won't be making it to the North American market, so those on the Western shore of the Atlantic will just have to admire from afar, like with the images in the gallery below.

Double Dutch: Spyker Unveils New C8 Aileron at Geneva Show

Europe's finest sportscar-makers descended on the lakeside town of Geneva from all over the continent, and the Netherlands was well represented at the show this year with the new C8 Aileron. Sporting a longer wheelbase for a more commodious cabin than the C8 Laviolette which it replaces, the Aileron was shown in Geneva last year as a concept car and returned this year in production form. Power is provided courtesy of Audi, with a 400-horsepower V8 driving one of the most deliciously appointed interiors on the market. Rather than simply lengthening the C8's wheelbase, Spyker went back to the drawing board for the Aileron as it attempts to lure buyers away from more mainstream sportscars and make it in the lucrative North American market. See for yourself in the gallery of photos below.

Aston Martin Revives Lagonda Marque in Geneva with Quirky Crossover Concept

For such a small company, or by any measure, really, Aston Martin certainly had its hands full preparing for this year's Geneva Motor Show. The company currently offers essentially two model lines, but at the Swiss show revealed four new models that didn't step on each other's toes. In addition to the V12 Vantage, the DBS Volante and the seven-figure One-77 supercar, Aston also took the opportunity to revive the long-dormant Lagonda marque. Now celebrating its 100th anniversary, Lagonda has been out of commission for decades, but is now poised to make a comeback. Unfortunately the concept which Aston unveiled to kick off Lagonda's return disappointed what could have been an elegant affair.

Instead of showing a limousine as expected to take on the likes of Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Maybach, the Lagonda Concept is an awkwardly-styled crossover with a huge gaping mouth and unattractive shape, especially in the presence of such classically beautiful Aston sportscars. Company executives hope the production version, whenever it rolls around, will help them expand into new markets like the Middle East, China, India and Russia where luxury SUVs are even more the rage than they are in the U.S. But while this beast may strike a chord with those who have more money than taste, we would have expected a little more from Aston Martin. See for yourself in the gallery of photographs below.

Zagato's New Perana Z-One in Person at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show

Of all the countries in the world producing sportscars, South Africa may not spring to mind first. A small sportscar-maker called Noble operates there, and we recently reported on the new Barnard, but at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show this year, a new player called Perana popped onto the scene with the Z-One. Designed by venerated Milanese styling house Zagato - the same people who brought us the one-of-a-kind Ferrari 575 GTZ, the Spyker C12 concept car and the $1.7m Bentley Continental GTZ - the Z-One was perhaps the most beautiful new car presented at this year's Geneva Motor Show...and that's saying a lot. Power is provided by a Corvette-sourced V8 engine, and prices start at 50,000 euros. Not chump change for most of us, but a steal nonetheless for one of the most breathtaking sportscars money can buy. See for yourself in the gallery below.

Sacré Bleu! Bugatti Celebrates 100th Anniversary at Geneva Show With a Fresh Coat of Paint

This year's Geneva Motor Show had plenty of surprises and a wealth of breathtaking new automobiles on display, but it also had its share of disappointments. Bugatti, for example, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. But instead of marking the occasion in the grand style we expected, Bugatti simply slapped a fresh coat of paint on an existing Veyron and blew out the hundred candles on its cake.

Called the Bleu Centenaire, the special Veyron is differentiated from its "ordinary" counterparts (if you could apply the term to a seven-figure supercar) by a special French Racing Blue paintjob in tone-on-tone matte and glossy finish, complemented by special wheels. Only one will be made, but then just about every Veyron to roll out of Bugatti's Molsheim factory is different from every other.

The Classicist: A Closer Look at Car Show Girls

Filed under: Wheels, Events, Art, Books, The Classicist

All week we've been treated to gorgeous new cars from the world's leading marques at the Geneva Motor Show. In most of the pictures we also got a tantalizing glimpse of thigh, shapely arm or other anatomical fragment of the equally alluring models hired to show off the luxurious machines to best advantage. For most these women are a mere sideshow, a sort of added attraction, but for Dutch artist Jacqueline Hassink they're the main event. Hassink, who has received critical acclaim for her books and exhibitions that deal conceptually with issues of power and social relations, spent the past five years traveling to three continents photographing car show girls.

The resulting body of work from major car shows in seven different cities on three continents, including New York, Paris, Geneva, Tokyo, Detroit, and Shanghai, is collected in her new book, Car Girls (Aperture, $85). Hassink used these sites to reflect on "differing cultural values with regard to their ideal images of beauty and women." The series captures the moments during the women's performances when they "become more like dolls than individuals." The luxuriously produced book, limited to an edition of 1,500 copies, takes a subversively fun yet conceptually astute approach to examining "differing cultural values and ideal images of femininity as used to define corporate identity," and luxury car brands in particular.

"Car companies are global players who need to continually re-present themselves to local markets," Hassink notes. "Each year they show off their latest car models at extravagantly staged shows in major cities across the globe. The shows that take place in Detroit, New York, Tokyo, Frankfurt, Geneva, and Paris are the most important according to the industry. Less important are the shows in New York and Shanghai. At these shows, the auto manufacturers take great pains to distinguish their brands, but they all present their latest cars in the same way: with the help of female models. Essentially, the women become tools to present the corporate image in a very distinctive way." See the gallery for examples from Ferrari, Maserati and more.

Infiniti and Louis Vuitton Pull the Veil off the Essence Concept in Geneva

After twenty years in the North American market, Infiniti has become a mainstay of the luxury segment on this side of the Atlantic. But in Europe - home to some of the most established premium automakers in the world - Nissan's luxury division is just making its debut. The corporate strategists knew they'd have to make a big splash to make any sort of impact on the European market, so they teamed up with luxury label Louis Vuitton to create the stunning Essence concept.

Collaborations between automakers and fashion labels are nothing new - think Audi and Prada or Lamborghini and Versace - and we brought you news of this partnership before the show even opened. But we had no idea what a stunning show car it would yield. Easily among the most beautiful of the show-stoppers this year in Geneva, the Infiniti Essence features hybrid propulsion that yields nearly 600 horsepower, in a muscular yet elegant and futuristic shape that couldn't be missed. LV was brought in to craft a special set of fitted luggage for the concept, rekindling a century-old business for the French luxury label which we hope Infiniti will offer on its existing vehicles already in showrooms. Audi Presents an SUV Alternative with A4 Allroad Quattro at Geneva show

If you're in the market for a luxury sport-utility but don't like the idea of driving a mamoth off-roader around town, Audi may have what you're looking for in the A4 Allroad Quattro. Joining the larger A6-based Allroad, the A4 version combines the versatility and rugged styling of an SUV with a more car-like ride and profile.

Like the Volvo XC70 or Subaru Outback, the A4 Allroad is essentially a conventional station wagon with a higher ride height, all-wheel-drive and rugged body cladding. It's being offered with a choice of turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines, starting at around the equivalent of $47k in European markets. Given that the A6 Allroad was withdrawn from the North American market, the A4 Allroad may or may not make it over the Atlantic, so the images in the gallery below may be the closest you get to seeing it up close while we wait for the final verdict from Audi.

Panamera Delayed, Porsche Unveils Updated 911 GT3 in Geneva

At this year's Geneva Motor Show, Porsche was originally scheduled to unveil its highly anticipated new Panamera four-door model, bridging the gap between its sportscar line-up and the Cayenne sport-utility vehicle. The German automaker, which recently acquired majority stake in the entire Volkswagen Group and all its many subsidiaries, opted instead to delay the Panamera's launch. Purists were undoubtedly pleased to see Porsche instead use the occasion to unveil its latest performance-focused driving tool, the revised 911 GT3. Slotting in below the Turbo and GT2 models in the 911 range, the new GT3 features a 3.8-liter flat-six that generates 435 horsepower without the need for turbochargers...good enough to propel the lightweight sportscar to sixty miles per hour in only 4.1 seconds. Center-locking wheels, a big rear wing and vents aplenty set the GT3 apart visually from the more ordinary versions of the 911, as you can see from the photographs in the gallery below.

Ferrari Announces Exclusive 599XX Program in Geneva

Hard as it may be to imagine for the common folk, there are some super-wealthy sportscar enthusiasts for whom an "ordinary" Ferrari isn't fast or exclusive enough. But the exotic Italian automaker isn't about to leave its most valued (and high-value) clients unsatisfied, so back in 2005 they launched the FXX program that allows the unspeakably wealthy to become client test drivers for the factory, piloting experimental Enzo prototypes packed with the latest F1 technology around the finest race tracks in the world. This year at the Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari followed up with an experimental version based on the 599 GTB Fiorano. Called the 599XX, it packs a 700-horsepower V12 and a host of Formula One-derived technology to be tested by the participating clients before being applied to the next generation of Ferrari supercars. The program costs upwards of a million euros to participate, including the cost of the car, but only 20-30 will be offered and spaces made available. At that level of exclusivity, you're not likely to see a 599XX roaming your local streets (especially since it isn't street-legal), so click on the images below to see the 599XX on the floor of the Geneva Motor Show.
