Issey Miyake TO 001 Watch

At one point, the "watch of the future" was a digital one, but as time passed, the stylistic virtues of analog watches began to outweigh the easy readability and multiple functions of digital watches. The fact that digital watches almost unfailingly attached to plastic bands for nearly two decades didn't help. Without a scrap of plastic in sight, Issey Miyake's TO 001 Watch really looks like the "watch of the future." It looks as though it has simply been sculpted from a piece of metal, yet it is fully functional. The ultra-sleek watch is entirely made of stainless steel, with a silvery dial, covered with a fine glass face, and a metal strap. It is packaged in a metal gift box, too. Price: $450.

Roche-Bobois Dyna Table

Sleek, sexy and ultra-modern are all adjectives that would fit the Dyna Table from Roche-Bobois, but they alone would not to it justice. The motion that is captured in its design makes it look as though it sprung from the (very posh) ground. The table is 7.5-ft long and has a clear glass top, which enables diners to view the composite wood legs and ebony finish Alpi veneer. The glossy coat enhances the grain of the wood, rather than hiding it from view. The matching Woody chairs have the same finish as the table.

It wouldn't hurt to have that mountain-top view behind the table, either. Price: $5,510.

Futuristic Kitchen by Zaha Hadid

Zaha Hadid is an architect known for her innovative and deconstructionist designs, which are found throughout the world. During Design Week in Milan, Hadid created a futuristic kitchen setting out of DuPont Corian. The Z-Island kitchen included two main units, one associated with "fire," which housed the cooktop, and one associated with "water," which had the sink and dishrack. In addition to these fairly basic functions, the "sensory- responsive kitchen environment" had multimedia sound and video equipment embedded into the islands, all of which could be controlled with a central touch panel. The modular wall storage featured a coating that gave it "advanced sound and light diffusion capabilities" to enhance the overall experience of being in the room.

Gravity Salt and Pepper Mill

The Gravity Salt and Pepper Mill by Trudeau is unique in that it has no buttons. It works simply by flipping the mill upside down - hopefully over a plate of food that you hope to season - and it will turn on automatically, triggered by gravity and powered by 6 AAA batteries. The grinder can handle either large crystal salt or pepper, but it comes already filled with mixed peppercorns. It also comes in green, chrome and red, but the sleek sliver model is the most futuristic-looking, not to mention the least likely to end up with unsightly fingerprints. Price: $26.95.
