Luxury Furniture Store Robb & Stucky Files Chapter 11

Luxury furniture retailer Robb & Stucky has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection here. The company sells a variety of high-end collections including Ralph Lauren home, Keno Brothers and Tommy Bahama but has struggled in recent years partly because its strongholds are in markets in Florida, Arizona and other challenging real estate markets.

The company, which was founded in 1915 in Florida, has listed assets and debts in the range of $50 million to $100 million. Furniture Today reports that the bulk of the company's unsecured creditors are home furnishings companies which are owed about $8 million. The brand issued a press release saying that it is looking for a buyer. It employs about 1,300 people and stores will remain open during the transition.

Jean Paul Gaultier's New Collection for Roche Bobois Featured at Kips Bay Decorator Show House

Jean Paul Gaultier designs collection for Roche Bobois
One you enter the townhouse showcasing the 38th Annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House on the Upper East Side of New York, you can't help but notice the stunning pieces including a striking modular sofa that grace the grand entrance hall. The sofa is unmistakingly Roche Bobois but with a twist. Each of the pieces was designed by Jean Paul Gaultier and part of a collection he exclusively created to commemorate Roche Bobois' 50th anniversary of international design and development. Roche Bobois is the winner of the Luxist Awards' Readers' Choice Award for Best in Furniture.

The Jean Paul Gaultier collection for Roche Bobois includes a bedroom set, sofas, complimentary furniture pieces and accessories. Born in 1952 outside of Paris, Gaultier is an internationally renowned designer and couturier who likes to shake up conventions, redefine classics (as he did most recently for Hermes), and play with opposites.

A centerpiece of the collection is the Mah Jong Couture modular sofa (a portion of which is seen in the image above). The modular composition features hand-made padded cushions, straight and corner backrests. An optional adjustable feature on backrests is available. It is priced at $31,610 for nine elements. Gaultier's hand-trolley mirror, also seen above, features red lacquer and steel tubing. It retails for $2,690. (L. 45 X H. 160 cm.)

Shabby Chic Creates New Furniture Line

Shabby Chic, the lifestyle brand founded 20 years ago by Rachel Ashwell is back with a new line of furniture. The Guildmaster Shabby Chic Collection continues the casual soft vintage style of the original pieces that become popular with stars like Pamela Anderson and had millions looking for charmingly aged antiques to create a similar look.

The new designs are based on actual antique and vintage designs that Ashwell found while doing her own antiques digging at places like the famous Brimfield antique shows and other flea markets. The pieces are being made by Guildmaster and come in four basic finishes-- light gray, white, darker gray and simple white with several finishes that offer the look of a delicately aged patina. Home Accents Today has a couple images of the new pieces, tables, chairs and cupboards in classic designs that seem very in tune with the Shabby Chic aesthetic.

Fortunoff Plans Line Of Outdoor Furniture Stores

Fortunoff is back in business, well, sort of. The outdoor furniture and jewelry store brand filed Chapter 11 and was liquidated earlier this year. However, the name may live on. The Chair King, a Texas outdoor furniture store chain, has purchased a controlling interest in Furniture Concepts, a company created by two former Fortunoff execs and a member of the Fortunoff family. Furniture Concepts owns licensing rights to the Fortunoff brand of outdoor furniture and seasonal products in the United States. The plan is to open six Fortunoff Backyard Stores on Long Island and New Jersey on Feb. 1, 2010. There are no plans to bring back the jewelry side of the Fortunoff business.

Lulu Guinness 50's Furniture Shop Carmen, Handbag of the Day

Lulu Guinness remains one of my favorite handbag designers. Her bags are instantly recognizable for their unique and whimsical design. This one, from the Autumn/Winter 2007 collection, depicts a 1950's furniture shop scene embroidered upon black patent leather. I love the details - especially the star-burst clock hanging on the wall of the shop and the L.G. monogram on the door. I also like the shape - a large box with a full sized zip closure. It is a cute bag with a retro vibe. £195.00.
