Louis Moinet Jurassic Tourbillon Watch With Fossilized Dinosaur Bone

Rare and old rocks on watches are quickly becoming one of Louis Moinet's specialties. Until now it was mostly space rocks and old stones, but they are are getting into the fossil business. The operative term for this collection is "Time Explorator." A strange sounding term that refers to a yet-to-be-shown display box with all sorts of cool stuff going on. It will contain a bunch of watches and other time travely features - and will otherwise be known as "the treasure chest of origins."

So the Jurassic Tourbillon watch is just that - one of Louis Moinet's standard Tourbillon timepieces with a dial made from actual fossilized dinosaur bone. Cool! The case is in white gold and 47mm wide with baguette cut diamonds on the bezel and lugs. Louis Moinet chose rust colored galuchat for the strap to make the style of the fossilized bone on the dial. Now I want a watch with T-Rex teeth styled hands. Look out for more Time Explorator watches and items soon.

Fossil Makes Staff Cuts

Fossil Watches is the latest company in the troubled jewelry and watch sector to hit hard times. The maker of casual mid-priced watches, jewelry, handbags and accessories has announced that it is laying off hundreds of employees around the world to cut costs. JCK News reported that the company could be eliminating up to 260 positions which is four percent of its approximately 6,000 employees. Fossil's executive officers and senior vice presidents will be taking a pay cut and a hiring freeze is in effect. The company saw a 12.9 percent decline in fourth quarter net income but in fiscal 2008, Fossil's net sales rose 10.5 percent.

Fossil has slowed their plans for retail store growth. The company also has licenses for Giorgio Armani, Michael Kors, Adidas, Burberry, Marc Jacobs, and Donna Karan and sells their various lines through department stores, jewelry and watch stores, and specialty retailers around the world as well as on their website. The total payroll cost cuts should save the company about $16 million annually.

Fossil Watch With Power Reserve

Fossil's watch models have been gradually getting more interesting. They've got the design angle covered with their collaboration with Philippe Starck and they are gradually getting more luxurious looking with models like their skeleton watch. Their latest designs features a Chinese-sourced automatic movement in models with a calendar function and a power reserve indicator like the one shown above. The power reserve indicator is a bit huge and the seconds dial has the shape of a Ouija board planchette which is rather odd. The new watches have a mineral crystal and display back and sell for $175 to $195.

Philippe Starck Cross Digi Watch

I've always liked Fossil watches, and this one is no exception. It's definitely not a design that will go with just anything, but this Phillip Starck Cross Digi watch is no doubt an eye catcher. The cross design displays the time vertically and the day and date horizontally, and the silicone strap is adjustable while remaining seamless with hidden control buttons for a minimalistic design. It's available in white, black, orange, and green with coordinating LCD screens.

For $125 I think it's a fun way to take the typical digital watch idea to a classier level.

Fossil Twist Watch

Want the look of an automatic movement watch with the accuracy of the quartz movement? Fossil attempts to do that with their twist line and all for under $100. What's the magic? It's basically a quartz watch with a little slice cut out of the dial that shows an automatic movement which powers the second dial. The stainless steel watch is available in mens and ladies versions in rectangular and round shapes.

Dinosaur Fossil for Charity

It may look like an ordinary rock, but this rock is actually the fossilized cast of a dinosaur brain and the closest you can get to a real dinosaur brain without buying an island and making your own Jurassic Park. The rare fossil, discovered in Sussex, is 135 million years old and shows "finely preserved impressions of nerves blood vessels and other soft tissue" from the brain of an Iguanodon. The auction entry suggests that it would make a great piece for a museum looking to expand their collection, though it would certainly be a conversation starter for a private home. The bidding starts at £50,000 and 60% of the final sale price will support Children's Brain Tumour Research Center.

Fossils up for Auction in London

On April 20th, Bloomsbury Auctions will auction off a 35-million year old sabre-tooth cat skull. The skull, which is intact and in outstanding condition, was discovered in South Dakota is expected to go for at least $8,000-12,000. Also at the auction, there will be several other fossilized items. A 200-million year old, 2-meter long aquatic lizard known as an ichthyosaurus is expected to fetch $35,000-50,000 dollars. Other lots include 120-million year old fossilized Hadrosaur eggs from China and 160-million year old sauropod excrement valued at approximately $1,000.
