Unique Cutlery by Zaha Hadid

I, for one, am a fan of understated design elements -- the things that don't jump out, but get admired more by chance by people who notice details. And as far as I'm concerned this cutlery set designed by architect Zaha Hadid, with the fluid and unique design, is one of those items. Artistic yet surprisingly simple and functional, the two spoons are my favorites. They seem fun to use but in a sophisticated way -- reminding me of grown-up versions of the silly-straw, but without the cheap plastic and obnoxious colors.

The $250 set should be available starting this month, but with a very limited U.S. distribution.

Iittala Mango Flatware

Who would have thought that flatware could be sexy? The Iittala Mango Flatware was originally designed by Nancy Still back in 1971, but as all trends eventually come around again, it isn't surprising to see it popping up again now. Made of matte brushed 18/10 stainless steel, each piece has a sinuous elegance to it and would word well at both formal and casual dinners. The set is made in Finland. Price: $70 per 5-piece set.

Chromed Turkey Lifters

For some reason, specialty Thanksgiving platters and serveware tend to be rather cheesy, with little pictures of pilgrims or cornucopias adorning them in the worst examples and an overly rustic look on the slightly more stylish side of things. Thankfully, there are at least a few good-looking serving implements out there, like these Chromed Turkey Lifters, which are simple, functional and attractive. They are made out of chrome-plated zinc and measure 4"x9.5". They will give you the support needed to lift even heavy turkey from the roasting plan to a serving platter, then can also be used to serve the individual slices to guests. Price: $18.

Seniora Fork Chair

Ignacio Ruiz Gutierrez H. is only 20 years old and already seems to be heading towards something great if his fans are to be believed. His works show a lot of creativity and have a smoothness to them that makes each piece very pleasing to the eye. The Seniora Fork Chair is one that would make a fantastic set of dinner chairs, though the design does not yet seem to be available for that purpose as of yet. The chair is made of wood and is, essentially, a giant curved fork. It took 3rd place at the 2006 Andreu World International Design Competition, so as the designer gains recognition, we should start to see more of his works available for purchase.
