Orvis Presents North America's Finest Hunting Lodges

Last spring we reported that legendary Vermont-based sporting outfitters Orvis had published a great new book on fly fishing's finest destinations. Now the company has come out with an equally compelling companion volume on hunting game birds. Great Hunting Lodges of North America: Wingshooting's Finest Destinations (Rizzoli) is a lavishly illustrated look at the very best upland and waterfowl hunting destinations around. Profiles of almost 20 featured Orvis destinations celebrate the great American sporting tradition and include detailed information on the local game species and wildlife, the lodge and the surrounding countryside, along with in-depth sidebars on key game birds and sporting dogs. Even if you're merely an armchair adventurer who's never fired a shotgun the great outdoor photography is worth the price of admission in its own right. Featured lodges include the Eagle Nest Lodge in Montana, Flying B Ranch in Idaho, Greystone Castle in Texas, The High Lonesome Ranch in Colorado, Mexico's Rancho Caracol, Deer Creek Lodge in Kentucky, Harris Springs Sportsman's Preserve in South Carolina and Pine Hill Plantation in Georgia. The Great Fly-Fishing Rivers of the West

Originally released in 1994, Grant McClintock's classic angler's almanac Flywater: Fly-Fishing Rivers of the West documented his year-long journey visiting the creeks, springs and freestone rivers that make the West the world's premiere destination for fly fishing. Now Universe has issued an updated edition complete with new photographs from McClintock's collection, revealing new river finds full of trout and steelhead. The destinations pictured in more than 200 full-color photos include New Mexico, California, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Montana and Wyoming; the cover shows picturesque Pelican Point on Montana's Missouri River. Interspersed with the photos, McClintock explains the complexities of fly fishing in each type of "flywater". The book also features a foreword by renowned newsman and fly fishing enthusiast Tom Brokaw, who notes that McClintock magnificently captures the sport's "sense of majesty and humility – majesty in the surroundings and the humility that comes with understanding that the fly-fishing angler is there on nature's terms."

Learn To Fly Fish In Florida

Fly fishing and warmth await attendees of WaterColor Inn & Resort's Orvis Fly Fishing School in northwest Florida. A two-day course offers instruction in everything from learning to set up fly rods to perfecting new casting techniques. The course is offered year-round on select Tuesdays/Wednesdays and Saturdays/Sundays.

The two-day course kicks off with an overview of the program and classroom presentation on lines, rods and reels. Students receive tutorials on the basic casting stroke, shooting line, false casting and roll cast and test what they have learned with some outdoor practice. Day one concludes with a knot tying seminar and discussion on fly fishing equipment and accessories.

The next morning begins with a lesson on fly selection, as well as tips on how to handle, photograph and release fish properly. Students then embark on an afternoon fishing excursion to local lakes or the Gulf (depending on the time of year and weather conditions), where they will hook fresh and saltwater fish.

The WaterColor Resort Fly Fishing School is offered year-round on select dates in 2010 for $470 per person. The price includes professional instruction, use of Orvis fly rods and reels, leaders, flies, waders, vests and fishing licenses, as well as lunch both afternoons. Lodging at the resort is additional.

Three Forks Ranch Opens For Guests

The Three Forks Ranch located on a huge 200,000 acre spread along the Colorado-Wyoming border, is a new ranch destination combining fly fishing, horseback riding, sport clay shooting and other rugged activities, along with the sumptuous experience of a luxury resort and spa. The 30,000-square-foot lodge has 15 rooms and details like giant-beamed cathedral ceilings and European hand-carved paneling. The 15 guest rooms have antique oriental rugs, silk-linen wallpaper, Bellisari Italian linens, Chadsworth & Haig robes and L'Occitane toiletries and all rooms in the lodge have views of the Little Snake River Valley.

The lodge's Oxbow dining room offers gourmet meals, afternoon teas and wine tastings. The Roaring Fork Spa has hot tubs, soaking pools, and four massage and treatment rooms, with treatments such as Little Snake River Stone Therapy, Sportsman's Relief Massage and the Catch-and-Release Body Wrap.

The owners of the Three Forks Lodge have gone to great lengths to restore the fish population. A plan led by hydrologist Dr. Dave Rosgen of Wildland Hydrology was developed to reduce erosion, plant new vegetation and develop wetlands, creating the largest privately funded river restoration in U.S. history and a pristine fly-fishing environment. The Three Forks Ranch fishing guides offer custom fishing opportunities for novices and those with more skills. Fishing for brook, cutthroat, brown and rainbow trout is all catch-and-release. The summer fly-fishing season runs through October 31, 2008 and the winter season which begins December 15, 2008 offers cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, alpine skiing excursions to nearby Steamboat Springs, sleigh rides and dogsledding. All rates include lodging, meals, guide, horseback riding, hiking, four-wheeling, and sporting clays and one massage treatment. A four-night room in a deluxe room costs $5000.

Big Sky Montana, Estate of the Day

Imagine your own private hideaway in Big Sky Montana. This camp has plenty of space for a large family or group of friends. There are 16 bedrooms total in the main lodge, three river cabins and two cliff cabins over 19 acres. The retreat sits on the Gallatin River. The property has plenty of space for exploring nature. It's definitely a bit rustic but if you are a nature lover you could not ask for a more perfect setting. It is listed at $6.3 million.
