Cutting the Electronic Cord with Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan (with Video)

Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan offers his best tips for getting rid of electronic cable clutter.
As most of us have experienced or will experience during the holidays, new electronic gadgets, from flat screen televisions to Blu-ray players, and iPhones, are all wonderful to have, but they all have one drawback---each comes with cords, cables or other accessories that are eye sores to have in one's home.

Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, author of Apartment Therapy's Big Book of Small, Cool Spaces (Clarkson Potter, 2010) and founder of ApartmentTherapy.com, one of the country's most well-regarded and influential design blogs has offered Luxist several solutions for anyone who is facing such a dilemma. As the ultimate online destination for all things design, ApartmentTherapy.com's mission is to help people make their homes more beautiful, organized, and healthy. As technology has come to play a bigger role in the home, the term "techorating" is now being used to describe the use of technology in the home that is both beautiful and whenever necessary, invisible.

According to Gillingham-Ryan, it is possible to incorporate technology, even in small spaces, in ways that are both pleasing and beneficial without sacrificing quality. "It is possible to find great equipment that is mini in scale, but has high capabilities," he says. High quality speakers, for example, can be found in small sizes, he adds. (Be sure to check out the video below for more tips from Gillingham-Ryan.)

Ciil Technologies Outdoor Television Keeps Moisture Out

It's the time of year when the big Sunday football games are on but the weather is still decent. But you don't have to choose between indoors and outside with the Ciil Technologies outdoor television. It is the first 100 percent, fully-sealed 1080p HD flat panel display. The Ciil design has zero vents or filters making it impossible for moisture or dust to collect inside. The ventless system keeps the internal components safely warmed in extreme cold and properly cooled in extreme heat without the need for exhaust ventilation. An ambient light sensor automatically adjusts brightness to best match the lighting conditions and an anti-reflective impact-resistant safety glass protects the screen against damage. It comes in three sizes, 32" - $2,800, 42" - $3,200 and 47" - $3,750.

Piero Fornasetti Comes to a Screen Near You

It's the flat screen tv as canvas -- design co. Detour Moves has compiled a disc of animated interpretations of Fornasetti designs, inspired by Italian designer Piero Fornasetti's Theme & Variations. Each disc holds more than 500 images that rotate on your television, transforming a blank screen into changeable art that's peering at you -- this is Fornasetti after all -- as often as you peer at it.

The 3,000 discs were produced in a limited edition and come in a unique black lacquer box. All for $175.

Mirror Collage Plasma TV Cabinet

Some plasma televisions are works of art in and of themselves and to hide them would be a shame. But most aren't so fabulous and are better kept out of sight when not in use. There are lots of clever ways to conceal a flat-screen television - I've seen them behind panels, paintings and drapes as well as inside pop-up entertainment centers. But as far as a remedy to the unsightly black hole of the television, this one gets points for creativity. Wood-framed beveled mirrors of different sizes overlap in an artful arrangement that not only hides your flat-screen television, but adds light and space to your room. The overall dimensions are 71"W x 11"D x 51" and the cabinet will accommodate most 50" plasma televisions. $4649.

Samsung Wireless HDTV

Flat panel TVs look great, sleek and far less bulky than any ordinary TV, especially if you choose a large screen size. Unfortunately, unless you have a niche in the wall carved out for the screen - which is a good idea, but can be a hassle - there will be wires along your wall connecting the cable, DVD and any other relevant equipment. The Samsung SPD-50P7HDT Wireless is a 50" flat screen that solves these problems. It comes with a wireless AV center to which all of your extra equipment can attach. The center then transmits the signals to the screen, hanging wire-free (except for the power cord) on the wall. It's only available in Korea at the moment, and is priced around $5,000.
